Well done to the Power for winning their first flag. Thought it might be an idea to compare the SA teams at their 8-year stage.

Crows 1991-1998

2 Flags
50.27% Win-Loss Ratio

Power 1997-2004

1 Flag
59.57% Win-Loss Ratio

Verdict: Crows enjoyed more glory with the extra flag win, but Port have given their supporters more consistent minor round pleasure. Still, at the end of the day, 2 flags is better than 1. That's what we play for folks.

Goes without saying, that the wheels have fallen off a little for us since 1998. We've had some good times (2002) and bad (2004). Will be interesting to see if the Power can indeed remain a Power or slowly start to fade. Let's hope the latter.

Let's face it, they've had a much better start in the AFL than us.

Port have won three minor premierships, yet to this day we've never finished in the top two. They've had five finals appearances in their first eight years, we had three. They have a superb win-loss record, we have a mediocre one.

The only real edge we've had over them is our finals records. We've tended to overachieve, whilst Port have tended to underachieve. Although this has levelled out recently when we kinda lost that finals magic in the Ayres era.

Thank goodness we snatched those two flags when we did.

But it's OK now - we have Neil Craig and Nathan Bock.

In defence of Craig, I too was critical of his appointment but you have to admit he has absolutely been working his backside off and has the determination to make this football club succeed. We'll see if it pays off.

As for Bock, he's left a lot to be desired so far.

I knew this day would come and about the only thing we can crow about is that the Crows won 2 flags and they won their first flag a in their 7th season while Port took 1 season more...

1991/92/93/94/95/96/1997 makes 7 seasons for those doubters

I checked outside too...the sky did fall in it made the ground wet

Just expanding a little bit:

Crows 1991-1998

2 AFL Premierships
1 AFL Rookie of the Year (1992 - Ben Hart)
1 AFL Leading Goalkicker (1993 - Tony Modra)
1 Coleman Medal (1997 - Tony Modra)
2 Norm Smith Medals (1997/8 - Andrew McLeod)
18 All-Australians
50.27% Win-Loss Ratio

Power 1997-2004

1 AFL Premiership
2 AFL Night Premierships
3 McClelland Trophies (Minor Premiers 2002, 2003, 2004)
1 Rising Star (1997 - Michael Wilson)
1 Norm Smith Medal (2004 - Byron Pickett)
2 Michael Tuck Medals (2001 - Stewart Dew, 2002 - Nick Stevens)
12 All-Australians
59.57% Win-Loss Ratio.

Fair effort for both entities.

Thats the most balanced view I reckon.

However, you forget that we also have that useless night premiership and a Michael Tuck Medallist in Andrew McLeod:p

Credit where credit is due. He has been working his backside off ever since the season finished. My mail is they can't get him to take a holiday yet because he is working his backside off to prepare for next season. Hopefully all that hard work pays off.

We have trading period starting in a week and after that he will go on a holiday before getting back for pre-season training.

I still think Craig will built the side and someone else will take all the credit ala Shaw/Blight situation.

AFC have a 2003 night flag too.

only problem now is that after 1998 despite having a young & gun midfield (Roo,Macca,Goody,Edwards etc) we have virtually wasted the following 6 years (1999-2004) and almost certainly the next few years whilst we try to build some sort of list for the future - i suspect PAPs will not fall into the same trap

The All-Australian statistic is probably the most interesting one. Watch the Melbourne panelists cotton on to the likes of K. Cornes, Wilson and Brogan next year... Continuing my contention that AA guernseys are pretty much retrospective.

Probably says a bit about our finals records as well. You guys have probably had more of the individual stars who get that recognition (Ricciuto, McLeod, D. Jarman, Hart) who could turn it on for the big occasions, where we've had to rely on more of any even contribution.
