The first 'Rock" record

That's probably about right, You Really Got Me is still a pretty modern sounding song to this day.

The first Metal record would be Helter Skelter (or one of the influences on Metal at least) - what a monster the Beatles created ;) You Really Got Me would be an influence on Metal also as well as Hard Rock.

Helter Skelter heavily influenced the whole Punk genre as well IMO, as the Sex Pistols wrote a similar brand of music except didn't bother writing any tunes for the vocals. Helter Skelter is what you get when you cross punk with talent :p

Dave Davies guitar work in "You really got me" is one of the most influetial guitar pieces in rock history and is a blue print for punk rock, hard rock and heavy metal and all at the age of 17.

"Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats is generally considered to be the first rock and roll record and was released in 1951.

Yank bands such as Vanilla Fudge and Blue Cheer were doing what was to become metal well before any of the English bands.

And what a first rock song to hear. One of the finest tracks ever committed to tape, by one of the finest guitarist's of all time.
50 years ago and still the coolest name in rock, ever!

Check this out. What a cool cat!

He's got the Elvis look there...

It says on Wikipedia: "Originally released in 1958, "Rumble" utilized then unexplored techniques like distortion and feedback." and "It was banned in several radio markets because the term "rumble" was a slang term for a gang fight, and it was feared that the song's harsh sound glorified "juvenile delinquency." :D

Can't believe no-one's mentioned good ol' Bill Haley. Rock Around the Clock, from 1954, is the definitive beginning of Rock and Roll, bar none.

Not sure who could be considered Englands first rock band.

The Shadows(Cliff Richards first band) may be a contender.Anyway, cool tune from 1960 -extra style points for lighted ciggy in the peg head.

The Shadows -Apache

I'd say the shadows were 'rock' too - for some reason I thought it came much later than 1960.
"rock' is quite hard to define, but I'd have thought rock n roll was the most easily defined genre

g, e, f ring any bells ?

Pess,I'm neither a musician nor a rock historian so I don't really know the definative answer to the question when did 'rock' start.I agree with you that it is interesting though.

Maybe it's a simple as saying "Rock started when white guys got interested in the blues."

'Surf music'(like the Shadows) definately had an heavy influence in the early days.

I doubt however that the Kinks could be considered amongst the first rock bands.Rolling Stones, the Beatles,The Yardbirds and the Animals has already been around a few years before them.I think it's fair to say they were all 'rock' bands.

The Atlantics were probably Australia's first rock band, folllowed by Billy thorpe and the Aztecs.

Love this tune by The Shadows-Bombora.1962

Yeah - just looking for some discussion rather than definitive answer.

Just like rock around the clock was probably the firsr rock n roll hit there were plenty odf rock n roll bands and tunes before that.

Rock Around The Clock was the start of popular rock n' roll. Definately not the definitive beginning of rock n' roll.

As i stated Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88 was the start , 3 years earlier.

The term Rock covers such a broad genre. From what i can gather you are looking more at the start of English Rock, which would probably be Cliff Richard & the Shadows.
