What do we do with him?
I love Newy. Love him to pieces.
But his form has not been great this year. He has been moved further up the ground rather than having his offensive-defensive game and it's thrown him a bit.
His form yesterday was horrible.
So what happens?
Does he play? If so, then where?
Does he get dropped and suffer the ultimate indignity?

Newy's game today was poor, no doubt.

As it is my duty to watch Newman this year, I will take the sword at this point in time, not Newy.

Please do not forget, Mr.tugga, that last week he was very good for us. His kicking was sublime and some of his pressure acts good.

I'd like to see him with a few more tackles and perhaps in that backline position a bit more again. It's tough for a man later in his career to be moved up forward and expected to perform from the get go. Perhaps he could be a more of a forward pocket player (if that were the only spot available on the ground for him), but his main asset is his kicking skills and clearing the defensive with the 40-50 metre passes. Today (not sure why you said yesterday) we were so handball happy and it didn't allow him to use his footskills as much.

You have to give him some credit for what he has done for fashion on field with his swept look too.

Give me a break tugga, seriously, ffs.

Forward pocket (apply pressure, link with the midfield). Or back to the back line, our depth isn't good enough to drop him. But the kids need to step up sooner or later, we will need a new gun hbfer, or 2.

The swirling wind did no favours to his hairstyle either. Just something else to consider.

When was the last time he had more than 25p's?

Such a commentators comment, that one.

I'm not sure it really matters. When was the last time anyone outside Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Tuck, Grigg and Houli got more than 25p's. You know? What sort of comment is that?

You're talking about an on and off-field leader of the club who does more than go out and get cheap kicks. If he gets 25 and goes around in a circle, is that good enough for you?

I think he should play even further up the ground if anything.

Definitely don't think next week is the match to be sending him back to the backline. It was Lyon and Freo that first shut him down last year and put an end to that little purple patch he had.

Being carried at the moment. Tough decision to be made. Great leader perhaps but we need it on the field more than off right now.

Shoulda been put on Cloke to leave Chaplin free down back. As some others have said. Rance follows Cloke up the ground, but instead of Chapman going to him in the square, Newie should have had that task with Chapman roaming the space in front. 3 defenders on the one guy sounds excessive but clearly it was needed.

He has barely been sighted this year. When he gets the ball he still goes ok but he just can't find it.

With his standing at the club he probably still has another couple of weeks to turn it around. But yeah he does look finished.

Geez it would be cruel if were to go on and play finals this year without him!

I really love newy, stuck to his job for years, thrown in as Captain in the midst of the Wallace debacle but he probably never had the speed or skills play a designated mid role. He looks lost up the ground and its not playing to his strengths. Newy and petterd are playing for the same sweeper role and IMO Newy has runs on the board here while petterd is just finding the role. No brainer for me in sending him to either the backline or coburg.

Problem is that when he was playing that sweeper role/loose man, opposition teams worked it out, sat a man on him and pretty much negated him. He had a pretty ordinary season last year. I think he could be a very good HFF but I fear he may have just lost that 2%, so HB probably where he ends up. Agree with captain cotch. With Vlas, Arnot, Helbig and even White in the wings, HB fits.

Drop him. Bring in Arnott, Helbig, Vlaustin, Astbury, Griff. Time to start rebuilding again.

Newman and Houli should swap roles.

Houli on the wing
Newman half back

I still don't understand why they haven't made this move.
Houli is terrible upon the wing , continues to amaze me that people don't recognize how difficult it is to play upon the wing in the modern game . Funny enough we have two players who can genuinely play upon the wing and the best thing is they are 2nd and 3rd year players in Conca and Ellis . Due to others playing there and Conca being used elsewhere they dot play there . Newman can most certainly play upon the wing .
IMO we need 6 players capable of rotating through the wing and half forward , ATM they should be Newman , Conca , Ellis , Edwards , Lids and Martin . However for this to happen we need more genuine inside mids instead of trying to play Lids , Martin and Edwards in particular in there .
IMO Newman has been fine and great to see a midfielder whose first thought is get behind the ball .

Take Petterd out and send Newy to the backline. Start Ellis on the wing or send him to Coburg, this sub nonsense does him no good.
