It's the magnificent and chilling score by the legendary Bernard Herrmann that really sells it, I mean the angles and direction by Hitchcock is amazing, but the it's the music that makes it iconic and legendary. You don't even have to have seen the music whenever some other pop culture show or movie uses it (Like The Simpsons on several occasions like the time Maggie bashed Homer's head in with a mallet) to know its from Psycho.

My favorite-ever movie is Pasolini’s Arabian Nights and my favourite scene in it is when the male lead shoots his witch-lover between the legs with a bow and arrow - except that at the end of the arrow is a golden dildo. My description might make it sound like pr0n but it’s absolutely not. It’s erotica at its highest and most poetic level. The whole movie is a work of art, unlike 95% of the dribble that comes out of Hollywood.

In general, European cinema craps all over your average American tripe.
