Am I the only one who thinks the Hopman Cup is the shittiest tennis tournament ever invented?

I struggle hard to get into it, I am not a big fan of the format or the players it attracts.

Bring on the slams!

This is the time of the year to play it though. Leading up to a slam it guarantees 6 matches (3 singles, 3 mixed which in itself is a novelty) and gets more media interest than the 3 rankings tournaments in the region (Auckland and GC ladies, Adelaide men).

Next week though is the big week. Sydney's a shit venue but pretty much all the best female players and a number of the men's best are on show, and Kooyong has half the men's top 10 for their exhibition.

It devalues the tournament when Serena Williams is allowed to turn up late, and other players don't play their singles because of supposed injuries, but will play the mixed doubles if the tie is live.

i love the hopman cup. it might not be as prestigious as the davis or fed cup competitions, but it's pretty much the same exact thing, except with mixed teams. usually get some very good talent despite the lack of ranking points to earn which tells me that they players must like it too.

To me , the players play quite a lot of games and I must admit I dont think this years tournament has been as good with player withdrawls, serena coming late, safarova and berdych underperforming and dead rubbers. Add to that number 1 seeds, woman playing on 1 leg and a ridiculous final.

Sometimes I feel as if the players dont want to be on court after a 2-0 loss in both single rubbers, and a meaningless Mixed Doubles.

Just a question but in future maybe Perth could create a singles like tournament featuring both singles and double in the future(like Sydney)? Ive heard from the papers that the Hopman might get dropped from the Australian Open Series next year.

In terms of tennis quality this was one of the better tournaments the Hopman Cup has seen. I base that on seeing every session in person for the last 10 years.

The thing with the Hopman Cup is the players love it, they are assured a certain amount of matches and they are treated like Royalty while at the events. The hotel is a 2 min walk from the dome and they get to stay in luxury while having their every need accommodated.

One thing that Paul has been very successful in doing is bringing up and comers to the tournament before they make it big.

The tournament has been dropped from the Aussie Open Series but has just been signed on for another 5 years to stay in Perth and the major sponsor Hyundai has signed on for another 5 years as well. One more will be held at the dome before they move to the new entertainment centre which will be the exact same playing conditions as Rod Laver.
