Round 3, 2012. North are playing the reigning premier on a Sunday twilight. North came back from Hobart thumping GWS by 129 points and Geelong pulled off a bruising victory against the flag favourite Hawthorn on Easter Monday. North are ranked 13th for average age and 13th for experience compared to Geelong's ranking of 4th for avg. age and 5th for experience. Should be a bloodbath right? Not quite. North were up by 6 goals at 3QT and got out to 42 points before Geelong put in a couple of efforts to trim the margin down. The sealer was kicked by Kieran Harper after some Daniel Wells magic. Bastinac and Ziebell kicked 4 and Harvey was at his absolute best. Wright blanketed Stevie J. Mutltude of winners on every line. Something that is a fantasy nowadays.

Now lets look at the lineup:

It's hard to believe that Geelong got done considering the quality of the team that went out that night. But it speaks volumes that the mix of senior experience with the emerging young talent meant North could steady the ship or perhaps put their opposition to the sword with quick play and heavy scoring. Something we've tried to do multiple times this year but it has been largely the opposite. Firrito, Thommo, Goldstein, Campbell, Petrie, Harvey, McIntosh, Adams, Edwards, Wells, Swallow and McMahon is a very solid senior core. It has its limitations, but there are a few players opposition teams will need to put work into and stop their influence.

Now, let's look at the 22 that went up against Port.

Who, in this lineup, is going to make oppositon put work into them? Other than perhaps Sheezel, LDU, X and maybe Larkey. The rest are either too inexperienced, inconsistent or don't have the required offensive capability that means coaches have to be defensively minded about them. When the game hasn't even started but already we are on the back foot, it's already a pretty dire predicament. The difference in senior quality is astronomical. It's not even close to the 2012 team. This is the importance of the mix. If we just took Boomer and Wells from that 2012 lineup and chucked them into today's team, I think we become a 6-7 goal better side. Heck, chuck in Petrie and that's our KPF issues sorted. Chuck in LT as well for that small forward goodness? See where this is going? If we can't command defensive accountability, prepare to defend all day because they are not going to hold back when it's their turn to go.

We are the least experienced and yougest team in the comp with very little quality left in the players with senior experience. Even considering the best 22 of 2024 vs. best 22 of 2012, today's team would get spanked by 10 goals. Maybe more.

It's crucial to understand that we don't have what Brad himself started with and he didn't win a final until 4 years after he was appointed. Clarko has 5 years to do it.

Hey this is reasonable and non-hysterical analysis, are you sure you want to roll with it?

LOL. Reasonable is the only way for me to keep my sanity so I'll defs roll with it.

I embarked on that trip back to the beginnings because it was an eye-opener into how important it is to have the right mix of senior players especially when a young talented group need guidance and leadership. Right now, the experience is too thin and the quality of the players just isn't there from the guys with games under their belts. It's been a major problem.

So, not only do Clarko and his team need to nail the young gun development, they need to find experienced talent or try to make the current crop work somehow. Impossible job. I really do feel for them.

What is noticeable is that defence: workman-line, yes. But skilled, tough and capable, yes also. And it was created from mostly bargain basement picks: a couple of picks in the 40s, the rest rookies.

We had the advantage of having a couple of older stars like Harvey (still in his prime really) and Petrie (more than a decade into his career and already on the cusp of AA selection in multiple positions on the ground.

The biggest difference is the fact the team has a KPP frame to it. Yes, lots of runners, but the required KPP to compete.

While the 2012 and 2013 sides under-achieved, they were only 3-4 years out from bottom 5 finishes. At the time, we were still capable of winning in nearly any week. We seem to be years off a win at the moment.

Great well considered post.

Our 18 to 22 group of players are arguably the best in the AFL. However our 27+ group are quite clearly the worst in the competition.

It is alarming how bad our senior group of players are and really highlights a lack of development and foresight from the club.

If we can get some good senior players in, it will fast track our rebuild. Otherwise we are looking at a slow burn until our 22 and under group hit the 24-25 year mark.

I don’t want another Darcy Tucker, but I do want a Luke Parker, Ollie Wines or Scott Pendlebury type to help lead the way. It will be interesting to see what the club and Clarko can pull off.

An interesting experiment is to replace our 27+ year olds with the same, from a side like Geelong for example.

We go from this

McDonald - Corr - Archer
Fisher - Comben - Sheezel
Scott - LDU - Shiels
Stephenson - Zurhaar - Simpkin
Curtis - Larkey - Duursma

Xerri - Powell - Wardlaw

To

Jake Kolodjashnij- Tom Stewart - Jackson Archer
Zac Fisher - Charlie Comben - Harry Sheezel
Bailey Scott - LDU - Mark Blicavs/Zac Tuohy
Jaiyden Stephenson - Jeremy Cameron - Jy Simpkin
Paul Curtis/Duursma - Tom Hawkins - Nick Larkey

Tristan Xerri - Tom Powell - George Wardlaw
