The exact moment it all went to crap ... The Godfather Offers of 2017

“I played with Josh Kelly who got some of the most ridiculous offers from North ... his dad played for North, and he was still able to say no.”
Former GWS captain Phil Davis, on SEN’s Whateley on Thursday.

In 2017, North Melbourne simultaneously made staggering long-term offers to Dustin Martin and Josh Kelly that would have made either the game’s best paid footballer at the time.

Brad going all in on The Godfather Offers is the key decision that has led directly to the onfield problems of today.

He thought he could sack Boomer, Drew and co at the end of 2016 because it wouldn't matter - we'd have Dusty and Josh Kelly soon!

And when his plan fell flat, he had no idea what to do next - so we drifted as he tried again with Gaff (the one bullet we've dodged of late) and we brought in Polec.

Then Brad realises he's stuffed up enormously and we need a rebuild, so gets the bullet because der, you're the problem we're here.

Along comes COVID in 2020 and king hits us, our coach has to leave the job due to a significant health issue and then Brady is faced with no choice than mass executions and a burn it down it down rebuild.

All the other stuff people obsess over - the CCJ trade, taking Will Phillips etc etc - is absolute rats and mice stuff compared to Brad misjudging The Godfather Offer strategy.

Teams, including very good flag winning teams, enter into trades that don't work and take high pick busts, it happens, and neither of those has had the kind of structural damage Brad's 2017 plan inflicted on us.

The kind of mistake it takes a decade to recover from ... and the way things are tracking, we should finally have corrected the ship and be playing finals and looking likely again in 2027.

Just in time to hit the free agency market for a big name high end recruit lol.

Oh, the memories.

Trolling Tiges fans, Josh Kelly's dog, It's happening gifs, Phillyroo lineing up for hours and getting Dusty to sign a North jumper.

Life was much better back then.

To be fair, given Brad had successfully nutted out free agency better than anyone else - getting Higgo, Dal and Jarrad Waite - ot did seem like a good idea at the time.

The whole blaming Brady Rawlings thing is useful only for identifying posters who have NFI

A bit rich coming from someone who insinuated that Euge was to blame for our current plight. Your posting is a perfect example of someone who has NFI. :stern look

Once Jen Watt leaves everything will be her fault

LOL, that's not what I said.

Please stick to the facts on this thread, I know your good friend Chadwiko struggles to do that, but you can.

What's your take on the Godfather Offer situation?

That was 8 years ago. There's been enough time to recover from those strategic errors since. Those decisions have no bearing on today (other than it showed we had a "cut corners" strategic mindset/culture that carried over) as those players didn't end up coming.

Virtually everyone at the club in 2017 is gone now anyway and the replacements have had ample opportunities to build a better culture. Therefore the choice of coaches, football department workers and players post-2019 have had a far, far more tangible impact on the current state of the club.

Brad Scott left the club in bad shape, true, but nothing a club with a decent culture couldn't course correct in 3 years like any normal rebuild. It was far from inevitable we'd slide to become the worst side in AFL history. Plenty of club decisions post-2019 "helped" lead to that. So blaming Brad Scott for all our troubles post-2019 is frankly pathetic. We need to move on. Especially as he's proving, again, that he can coach a B-grade list to outperform itself.

The club is more than one person and a couple of failed FA attempts 8 years ago. Cheap scapegoating is, well, cheap scapegoating. E.g. Not mentioning any of Ben Buckley, Ben Amarfio, Any board members of that time, Cam Joyce, Jack Ziebell etc etc in your 2017 blame game is some bizarre whitewashing.

The same rule applies to (an apparent favourite of yours) Brady Rawlings who is far from solely responsible for our current laughingstock status. That said, he is part of the problem and, hopefully, part of the solution.

When it's this bad it's simple - everyone at the club needs to be better.

Spot on.

Our "aggressive reset" had all the subtlety and cunning of throwing cash at everyone and when that didn't work it was going to the draft with just the picks we earned for being rubbish. Then, when that failed to yield instant results it was to clog the list with Polec, Tyson, Pittard and Hall. And when that didn't work Brad went to the board with "let's rebuild."

2017-2019... the wasted years.

the reset would have been fine if we had the means to identify decent players, instead we have a congaline of C grade HFFs with no goal sense and topped up with richmond spuds,

so we get what we have today, a list with about 14 AFL standard players at best and at least half of them are 20 to 40 odd games off being competitive.

Not suggesting that we redraft Mahoney, but he has shown more forward "craft" in the limited time that he played with us than a lot of our current players. At the moment, I would rather have Mahoney trying to find a target in our F50 than a lot of our midfielders.

and thats the issue in a nutshell, people debating Laz, Ford, stevens, sleevo, >inset any other c grader currently on our on someone elses list here < to come into the team, the improvements will come when the cream such as Wardlaw , sheez and colby become the new standard setters and drag the C graders along, i just hope we get another KPP in and up to speed in the meantime because we aint going anywhere with souva the general in the forward line,

What you said is this. “Well, given one was CEO, yes I can blame him for some of the s**t we're enduring now.” Like I said “A bit rich coming from someone who insinuated that Euge was to blame for our current plight” You have “NFI” from what you’ve posted from one post to the next. Here ye is a tip. Get off the weed and stop frequenting Treasury Gardens. :stern look

“All I want is to make sure when my times up at North, the club is in a better position than when I started”

Nice work Brad
