Player rankings for the last 3 years
Give me the rock (fantasy blog)

Upcoming groups:

See webpage.

Da Rulez (please read!)

The draft
I.Every team begins the draft with a “budget” (or salary cap) of 50 million. Nice round number.

II.Players will be auctioned off in groups of 6.

III.Groups will consist of players of similar fantasy value, using a “cheat list” off a pre-agreed fantasy site.

IV.If you have the highest bid for a particular player, the amount you submitted is what you’ll pay. So, if you offered 18 million for Kobe, and the next highest bid is 9 million, you will still pay 18m, not 9.5m or 10m (i.e. it’s not E-bay!)

V.An owner cannot successfully bid on more than one player in any group of 6. So, even if you had the highest bid on both Garnett and Nowitzki, if they are in the same group, you will only get one of them – specifically, the player that you bid more for.

VI.If an owner successfully bids on a player in 2 consecutive groups, he must “sit out” the next group.

VII.The minimum bid allowed for any player is half a million.

VIII.Each team will be required to draft 15 players.

IX.Once the draft is completed, owners are allowed to nominated 3 players who they wish to grant “2 year contracts”. These 3 players will be kept for the next season at exactly the same price.

The season

I.Standard 9-category roto scoring, free Yahoo! League.

II.Moves restricted to 20 for the season - It is the commish’s belief that leagues should be won through good drafting and trading, not by being the quickest to pounce on every available free agent.

III.Waiver wire waiting period will be 1 day.

IV.Trades will be made independent of “budget” implications – but note that 2-year contracts will carry over to the off-season.

The off-season

I.Following the end of the season, owners may extend a “qualifying offer” to 3 of their players. This gives them the right to see the highest bid for that particular player in the upcoming draft, and then match if they wish to.

II.Players going into the second year of 2-year contracts are removed from the draft pool, and their “cost” is subtracted from the 50mil budget before the draft.

III.Back to the draft!

Can we bid more than once a group of players, and more importantly more than once on the same player?

Can we bid more than once a group of players, and more importantly more than once on the same player?

Well, you won't actually see what the others are bidding, so I'm not sure why you'd bid twice.

I suppose if you've changed your mind on a certain player and decide he's worth more/less, I don't mind too much if you change your bids, but make sure you re-enter all your bids if possible.

The way it works is; all bids go into an Excel file once submitted, and when I change groups I'll open the excel file and just sort the bids to find the highest for each player. The file also records the time of your bids btw, and I'll always bid first (just after I change groups), so everyone knows there's no shenanigans.

Looking good MDC, although we wouldn't of expected anything less of you :thumbsu:

Also MDC do we now have 3 days to submit a bid on the 1st group? Does bidding end for this group thursday and a new group will appear on friday? Am i on the right track...

I'm not going to set a time-limit for this group, as it might take a little while for everyone to decide how they're going to approach the draft etc...

I'll check the bids on Friday morning, but if not everyone has bid, I'll extend it. Once all bids are received, and the the second group is in, it's all systems go.

Got a question...

The rule says that once the draft is completed you nominate the 3 players to have 2 year contracts.

Would it be better to nominate after the season? Otherwise there is no way to capitalise on owning a breakout player bcause you won't know their worth until the end of the season (did that make sense?).

This is very cool, very cool indeed. :thumbsu:

Gotta try and work out a strategy now, and I'm not sure which way I'm gonna go just yet....should be fun!!!

Thanks mdc for setting this up :)

Yep, but I wanted to get some correlation between "real life" and fantasy, and in reality all your players aren't going to have team options in their contracts. More often than not, you're going to have to guess their future performance before awarding the contract.

Although, we could incorporate a Team Option for players drafted in the last 3 rounds, similar to second-round picks in the NBA. Or would that just be too complicated?

Would that replace one of the three you can carry over?

It might work but I'm happy to keep it simple as well. I've learnt my lesson. :o

What would happen if I chose to give Lebron a two year contract and he's offered 50 mil to go play in Greece and misses the next season completely? How would I replace that 'keeper' on my list for the following season? It would be the same if someone does their knee in the last game of the season and will be out for the entire following year.

Just throwing up some scenario's.

Happy to go with the commish and/or consensus.

This is gonna sound ridiculous but is there any chance to make this as close to the real NBA as possible?

ie. Everyone gets kept the following year but you can choose to delist or re-sign whoever. I dunno just would be awesome to be in a league similar to a living breathing NBA.

Would that replace one of the three you can carry over?

Nah, I'd say they'd be on top of the three. Given they're being taken in 13th-15th rounds, it's highly unlikely they're going to be impact players, but it could be nice to have that continuity. I'll leave this up to consensus.

Also, since we don't have "rounds", but rather "groups", I should have said anyone taken in the last 6 groups would be eligible.

My gut says;
- If the player goes overseas or retires, then the contract is void.
- If the player is injured, he's still on the books.

I'll also add that even if you drop the player during the season, he remains on the books for next season. Likewise, if he is traded, the new owner assumes the contract.

It's a nice idea, but ultimately doesn't work, because the cycles are too long, and owners lose interest.

For fantasy to work, people have to believe they have a chance to win every year, otherwise you won't get an active league. Imagine being stuck with the Timberwolves roster for example, and knowing you won't be competitive for at least 5 seasons. Would you still play?

That's why I've kept the max. contract to 2 years as well, anything longer would slow activity imo.

Am wondering though if 50m is enough for 15 players?

What's the NBA cap? Is it closer to 60m now? I was just going off that really.

In the end it's fairly arbitrary, but I'm happy to raise it if people want.

Yeah is there like a league minimum where if you are going to go over the cap you can get some league min guys so you don't go over?

"VII.The minimum bid allowed for any player is half a million"

My preference is that there's no "going over" whatsoever - basically if you still need to draft 4 players, and you only have 5m left, the most you can spend on the next guy is 3.5m, leaving yourself enough to pay the last 3 guys minimum money. It's just easier for me to keep track of it that way.

Awesome set up.

Am wondering though if 50m is enough for 15 players?

Yeah I thinking the same as i've never been involved in a competition like this.

I have no idea where to start but i think my 5 milllion bid on Lebron will snag him! :D

So what if I'm in the last round and I want to bid for Pat Garrity... do I still have to bid at least $500,000 seeing that no one will want him...?

How will you decide who goes where if everyone starts bidding the minimum because they have very little money left at the end?

What if I want to trade Dwight Howard ($5 000 000) for Michael Redd ($10 000 000) but I am at $49 000 000 already?

What about free-agent pick ups...? Are they just $500 000? Are we going to have to bid for free-agents through out the season?

What I'm saying is, is the salary only relevant during the draft?

>_<

The cap amount is irrelevant really as long as we know what the minimum is.

Basically if you bid high early - you have to make sure you have enough basic salary to buy rubbish.

I think my 5 000 001 bid for Le Bron may win ;)

Good questions.

So what if I'm in the last round and I want to bid for Pat Garrity... do I still have to bid at least $500,000 seeing that no one will want him...?

Yep, 500K is the min. You should know though, drafting Pat Garrity is an instant ban from the league. That's an unwritten law.

How will you decide who goes where if everyone starts bidding the minimum because they have very little money left at the end?

Given I've asked everyone not to bid in round, million-dollar numbers, I'm hoping this won't happen too much. I.e. even if you're running out of money, you might have, say, 523K left, as opposed to 500K.

If 2 players do bid the same amount, I'll use the following tie-breaker:

a) The owner that submitted less bids in that particular group, wins the player. So for example if we both bid 500K for Kwame Brown, but I bid on 3 others in the group, while you just went for Kwame, you get Kwame.

b) If a) doesn't decide it, whoever's had the more recent pick loses out. So if we both bid 500K for Kwame, but I had gotten a player from the last group, whereas you didn't, you get Kwame.

c) If a) and b) don't decide it, whoever spent more on their first pick in the auction loses out.

Hope that makes sense. It's a little more complicated than a coin-flip, but I think it's a fair way doing it.

What if I want to trade Dwight Howard ($5 000 000) for Michael Redd ($10 000 000) but I am at $49 000 000 already?

Salary cap isn't in effect during the season. Basically, I want to see as much trading as possible, and having a cap during the season would restrict it. The only salary cap implication is that 2-year contracts carry over in trades. Otherwise, the salary cap is only relevant to the draft.

What about free-agent pick ups...? Are they just $500 000? Are we going to have to bid for free-agents through out the season?

What I'm saying is, is the salary only relevant during the draft?

See above :)

Just remember, FA moves are restricted to 20.

I'll also add that even if you drop the player during the season, he remains on the books for next season. Likewise, if he is traded, the new owner assumes the contract.

So if my guy retires or goes to Europe I start the season with only two keepers? That seems fine. I'm just clarifying.

I agree with what you are saying that everyone has to feel that they can win each year. What happens if you do start the season with say, Arenas on 11 mil and he's injured preseason and out for the year. Does that mean that my team effectively has 11 mil less cap and one less roster space? Thats a big disadvantage.

Taking an example from my league last year where someone had Oden and Brand go down preseason. What happens if I had both those guys on a 2 year contract? Can I cut them and not have to pay their contracts or am I stuck with their contracts?

Here's an idea.

If a guy is injured pre-season, you can choose to drop his contract off the books. An injury exemption basically. But...if he comes back during that year, you're penalised next season for however many games he's played.

Let's take Elton Brand as the example. Say you paid 10m for him last year, and decided to drop him before the draft when he blew his achilles.

Well, he came back and played 1/4 of the season, so you'd be penalised 2.5m (1/4 of 10m) this year.

Thoughts?
