Our midfield has been the major reason for our poor start to the season. It is one of the worst for defensive pressure, and tactical set-up. We have conceded the most goals from stoppages in the comp so far, and get opened up too easily when teams attack us through the corridor. Also, the ball movement and slow build up inside 50 is allowing opposition to negate our forwards easily and get numbers back. This also correlates with our poor forward 50 conversion.

Players like Vlastuin and Lennon should get minutes in the middle, as they are both great ball users and strong bodied, which would suit Dimma's brand of football. With Deledio missing, our midfield lacked run and carry and was lacking class outside of Cotchin. One centre bounce on the weekend consisted of Thomas, Grigg and Jackson with Big O in the ruck. That type of personal set-up will not take us anywhere. We have too many good ordinary players rotating through. Some class in needed to be added on the off-season if things don't improve.

Agree the midfield is an issue. No run, no dare, nothing. Its like they have a fear of failure somewhere? Don't know the answer either. What seem obvious is our use of the flanks and refusal to use the centre corridor.

Agree with this. At the game against the Bulldogs, I noticed times where players wouldn't leave their direct opponent to impact a contest only metres away. It was as if they had such strict instructions, that any kind of improvisation was out of the question and it resulted in more dangerous situations for us.

Hmmm I still think we are one gun midfielder away from completion... We have courage tenacity and balls. Take Cotch Lids and Dusty out and then we are without class.

Yeah we look too robotic. Probs trying to over compensate for the defensive side of the game. We need to find a balance and be smart to know when is the right time to leave ur man and attack the ball, and when to stay. Players seem to be shackled at the moment.

Players need to be able to risk the loss...(**** it we will play our game if we lose we lose), but we will not go back into our shells cos when we do we lose anyway. It's what has got us improvement each season prior to this one...

We are playing midfielders out of position .
We are two inside mids away , Arnott , Miles.
Inside mids don't have to be house hold names to win a flag .
Lids , S.Edwards are gun outside mids currently being used inside .

S.Edwards is a gun outside mid??? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. LMFAO!!!!

I liked how when Dustin Martin attends his third odd centre-bounce for the game in the third-quarter he gets an instant clearance. Why Cotchin, Lids and Martin aren't left there during big moments is beyond me.

Just very little clean ball coming out of there so far this year. Chimp has been OK, but has butchered it plenty, but we've just been caught on the rebound badly. As Richmond TT noted saliently, there is a difference between pace and run. It's nice to have quick blokes, but not much good if they can't run for long.

I would have thought Grigg was the obvious matchup for Libba, too.

I would really like someone to ask Dimma his response to Matt White's claims that he is barely top 10 in running at Port.

And they need to kick more goals, our mids. Something from the back half would be handy, too.

The midfield is on and off this year. I don't understand why they just switch off for long periods of time. They stop running and miss targets. It's a mental thing to me. They have run games out OK this year when switched on, but just play dead, slow, disjointed football at times. Maybe not enough leadership, maybe just over coached. But our midfield is the key to our lack of success so far.

Collingwood is also having troubles and might be a goodplace to play 4 quarters. Although I think I might just pick the black and white this week. Not confident at all.

[quot="nut, post: 32469271, member: 3620"]I'm wondering if we see Martin start on the bench again???????????????[/quote]
Yeah It would be good to see martin let off the leash at play more permanently in the midfield. Would also take some of the load off Cotchin.
