I'm just wondering, who should be our next coach? Unfortunately, the bloke pretending at the minute appears to be safe for next year until he runs off to his business, who's next in line?
I think the Esserdon prick should get out now, as mentioned give Ronnie Watt the chair for the rest of the year and appoint Buddha.
A great Geelong man, much like Worsfold at the Eagles if you couldn't play for this man you couldn't play at all. I think Buddha would have respect before he even said a word, and if you didn't play your guts out for the hoops you wouldn't be getting a game.
I had a bit to do with North Ballarat last year where he impressed me, and I've heard good things about his coaching at the Jets this year. We all know he bled blue and white, and would DEMAND the same from his players.

Thoughts anyone?

We've tried getting people from other clubs to coach our club, and without much success. I think it may be time to get someone who is passionate about the club, rather then just in it for the money. Garry Hocking certainly fits this category, and would be a good choice in my opinion.

Others which come to mind are Andrew Bews and Ken Hinkley.

Someone on the cheap no doubt. It would be throwing Buddha in the deep end but I wouldn't mind it as long as he has some experienced (AFL level) assistant coaches in the box with him. Are there any coaches in the VFL worth a look? Ron Watt seems to have a good reputation and the only other coaches I know are Libba and Matthew Armstrong, the latter having stints as an assistant coach under Pagan and Matthews.

Ron Watt seems to have a good reputation...

I think elevating Watt from Geelong's VFL-based reserves is certainly a good idea.

Watt knows the nucleus of the club well, and especially the young players, and the fact that he has won a Premiership with many of these players bodes well in terms of how they and the other players relate to him.

If nothing else, that would certainly make a solid foundation from which to start...

The time for thinking outside the box is inappropriate right now, and promoting from within seems about right.

Ken Hinkley is a must for any future coaching panel.
I agree.

I've been impressed with his team, Bell Park, in the GFL this season. They're sitting second from memory, and look the good for the premiership IMO.

I would only introduce Hocking to the coaching staff as an Assistant Coach for starters. It would be a very hard, and difficult ask to just throw him into senior coaching. I believe he would be a good coach, but only after a few years of assistant coaching.

The same would apply for the other two as well...

I think we should look at what West Coast have done with John Worsfold at the helm. Woosha was one of the most respected players at the Eagles in his playing days, was tough and captained the club. If the players couldn't play for a guy like that, then there's something wrong.

The same could apply with someone like Buddha at Geelong. Buddha would command respect as soon as he walks into the club, even before he says one word. His reputation as a player at Geelong speaks for itself... a tough footballer, club champion, all-australian and state representative, played over 250 games. If our young players couldn't play for a guy like Garry Hocking, then they shouldn't be at our club.

Sorry to butt in here, but if i were to pick a new coach for my team i would have 2 main criteria:

1) At least 3 years experience as an assistant coach at a different AFL club to the one he played for.

2) AFL premiership experience.

I wouldn't budge on either of those two points. Hocking is mentioned here prominently. I have two words for you - Tony Shaw.

AFL premiership experience.

The problem with this at Geelong is that it rules out any past players since 1963, and after going down the coaching path with great players from other clubs, (Blight, Ayres and Thompson) and not having any premiership success, I think it's time to look to one of our own past great players who would command respect from the young players from day one.
