Having to do more research, more regularity, more promotion, etc. yeah who knows. I agree think I'd still love it, but there is an element in most things of enjoying them less when they're linked to work.
Yeah the promotion side of it may be the only bit that would feel like work.

Doing research on sport is basically what i do with most my free time already! Consider this post an application for a position at your future company

Well. Gutted to lose it, and particularly the way we lost it tonight. But Houston deserved it, they had a great series. After so many years watching other teams play in the world series I've loved having my team play in one. Lots of improvement to come in this Dodgers team.

Hopefully back there next year and go one step further.

Yep doing your hobby for a job doesn't detract from how much you enjoy the fundamental part of it, it just adds in a whole lot of other shit that takes away from how much time you get to spend doing the fun bit. It also adds in the affirmation factor of what you are doing having a more widespread (hopefully positive!) affect on society, rather than just doing it for yourself.

Is anybody here genuinely happy in their job here?

I pretty much hate where I work atm. Underpaid, severely overworked, we don't get the support we need (in my team), we are treated differently to others, my manager is a ******* cow too. On top of that, they tell us they can't afford to higher more people, yet some things we send out have a broker fee of more than what I would earn in a fortnight.

I like most of the people I work with, but the higher ups are clueless as to how bad things really are. We had a staff survey the other week (anonymous) and I went to town telling them what was wrong with the place.
Yes and no.

I love my job, in that I'm the boss. But that is both good and bad. We're a multi-generational medium sized industrial firm. My grandfather started the place and ran it for 15 years, along came my father, who ran it for 25 years and now it's my turn (I'm 40). I went to uni straight out of high school, did accounting, but it was with a view to management, not being a CA or CPA. Put simply, this is all I've ever known, occupation wise. I'm not being braggadocio when I say I know this industry better than anyone else in the country. I was born into it. There's no challenge here anymore.

Problem is, growing up that way, you don't generally turn out a very nice human being. I was a spoiled immature brat, who was only concerned with which toy I was going to buy that week.

Then, a few years ago, I met the woman who is now my wife. She came from nothing...less than nothing even. And she turned my viewpoint of the world around. I've spent the last few years becoming very socialist. I love being able to make my employees lives better. I consider it a point of pride that all my staff, even the lowest paid, own their own houses. I love being able to quietly slide someone an extra payrise, just because I think they deserve it.

I think I've outgrown my own company.

I started doing psychology at UWA, almost on a dare, 2 years ago. I love it, and I'm good at it. I'm doing a bunch of astrophysics electives, and I'm even better at those. So now I've hit the point where I have to decide if I really want to follow either path career wise. Either would satisfy the urge to 'help' humanity, but it would mean a massive drop in income, and we have 4 kids who go to private schools etc.

So right now, I'm very torn. Stay for the $$? Or go hard into one of those new fields, filled with uncertainty?

Sorry for the long answer. A bit self-cathartic tbh.

I've always worried that doing my hobby for work would make me hate my hobby though.

E.g. Love doing Sports podcasts but if I did that as a job would I enjoy it as much?

Im happy cooking at home too.

I think if you love it and have a passion for it it won't die if you you do it more often. Live the dream.

$$$ is the other side - being confident you could earn enough to live a lifestyle you're happy with.

I work in what I love (Football industry) but I could get paid far more than I what am and wish I had more control at times. The issue that I've noticed is that I can feel burnt out a bit because I play football in my off time, then I watch it on TV/live and then I have to work it as well. You can suffer from fatigue from it all.

Yeah thats true. You've got to have other hobbies/interests as well for a bit of a release , mine is gardening.

Yeah i guess my hobbies easy to do to make money, the moneys not great(i could earn more back in the City) but my wifes the bread winner so to speak so i dont need to chase the big dollars.

Yeah of course but sometimes, depending on a week, I could be involved in training twice a week and then playing, watching EPL etc. midweek/weekends and then with the job, I could be at juniors, youth, men's and women's matches/training on top of working in the office.

True wealth doesn't come from your take-home. It's all about how you treat the money you earn. After I learned this, I switched from Commerce to Law and for the first time became content with what I'm working towards.

You make it, she wins it?

Only crap thing is finding decent staff as no one wants to work in hospitality anymore.
Pretty much. Hospo is awful. Did it for five years and had to get out. You're treated like junk and work horrible hours. It's very social but I got too old for it.

Yeah I'm the chairperson of ours. So far there has been no difference being that to just being on the committee, although from memory I have a casting vote if there is a stalemate on any decisions at an owners corp meeting.

No idea about the secretary as we don't have one (maybe as your building is larger? Mine only has 10 units). There are 3 of us on the committee who get emailed whenever anything happens and make decisions on how things are repaired/managed. The owners corp management company try and do everything the easiest possible way and don't really care how much things cost so it's good to have input as from my experience they don't really know a lot about how buildings work technically or what should or shouldn't be covered by warranties. It's also really useful to be "in the loop" if anything happens (ie: hot water service stopped working at our place last week and if I wasn't on the committee I would have no idea why or when it would be back up).

We did it less formally than that, no papers to set it up. Myself and one other owner were the only ones who turned up to the first owners corp meeting so basically appointed ourselves. I guess the skills and knowledge that have come in handy for me have been being involved in the construction industry myself, having lived in apartments previously, working prominently at a computer so being responsive to emails etc. I'd also mention that you are an owner-occupier as those are the people you want on the committee.
Sorry for my delayed response.

Yeah we have 50 in our block, though maybe only half are occupied.

Appreciate your help, that information is definitely useful.

Never to late, chase your dreams Cruyff14
Hahaha, unfortunately this one is. Doesn't help that I can't sing either haha.

He never went. Which is definitely part of the issue. Have you looked into any online courses you can do Cruyff? Anything to bump you up.
Definitely yeah, but that's not all bad. If I had, I'd not have met my fiance.

I started an online course before I got my current job (quit it after I got it), and I loathed it.

You can study while working and defer your payments. It's up to you - if you want a better job, it's probably for the best that you get some qualifications.
I'm too old to study now. When I get home I just want to relax, not come home and do my work. I know that isn't beneficial to me, but I can't, and don't want to spend my life working/studying. I need balance etc. See my friends, socialise, go to the gym etc

Yeah, l love my job. I love cooking and i get to do what ever i want(my bosses/owners are pretty great), i run the kitchen so i work the days i want and hire and fire who ever i want.

I get paid to do my hobby.

I'm glad you find that rewarding mate.

Yeah I used to work in hospitality, people think you're less than dirt.

This is a fantastic post.

You're obviously not struggling financially, and despite the four kids, all in private schools, I would assume given your experience you would have no problem finding a better paying job.

Ha, we just got a mortgage this year, and the dream is to own it one day (in about 30 years haha). But what you're doing sounds very rewarding, good on you.

True wealth doesn't come from your take-home. It's all about how you treat the money you earn. After I learned this, I switched from Commerce to Law and for the first time became content with what I'm working towards.
Yeah, definitely.

We're both fantastic savers and have a budget we adhere to each week.

Luckily the boss earns good money :D

I'm home by 5.10, but like I said, when I get home I want to relax. And if I'm not doing that, I'm either cooking or helping with dinner.
