‘what’s your incoming protocols? We’re locking anyone entering the country into hotel rooms for 14 days. AFAIK, you still had people from all over waltzing in no questions...
I don’t think we are doing it to that extent. I think only returning Brits are allowed into the country now though.

Australia definitely a success story at the moment. Hopefully it continues but you may have to be locked down right through your autumn and winter and into spring though?

at this stage at least the next month as is, but then possibly still restricted to a certain extent over the next 6+ months at this stage

I’d say border control will be critical for a while yet

I don't think weather has much impact though. Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines prove this. According to this, a majority of our cases have been in the 20-30 range which would contribute to the low death rate but the social isolation thing seems to be working, for now, which is why we're not seeing an explosion in cases. Low density population helps too.

I thought low density at first but then thought our pop density is largely skewed by the large sections of unused land.

most of the population arguably lives within 100km of the coast and density in cities would be similar to around the world

I think Australia will remain as we are until June/July. International border closed until it's over elsewhere.

NZ are showing nearly no community transmission at all and have been in stage 4 lockdown for a week. They're hoping the progress from that will start to show in a week with no new cases coming out except for those returning to the country with it, but they are put straight into 14 days isolation when they arrive so they can't pass it on

True but, even then, the likes of Sydney (423/km2) and Melbourne (508.175/km2) aren't hugely densely populated like New York (10,715/km2) , Bergamo (3,000/km2) and Madrid (5,300/km2) are (the main epicentres). Australians by and large still live in the suburbs in separate housing rather than apartment blocks.

I think having the images/numbers from somewhere like Italy already unfolding before it really ‘hit’ here made most take it seriously earlier relative to other countries.

We still did stupid things, like having crowds at the first round of NRL and that Hillsong event, but I think wegot a bit lucky in that those didn’t do too much damage. I definitely feel we closed pubs, restaurants etc. earlier than other places relative to the number of cases we had which helped massively.

It all means nothing really though if we don’t keep at it. School holidays and Easter a massive test now.

What have you lot done to contain this virus so successfully? Only around 30 deaths so far if I’m not mistaken. The only western nation along with New Zealand who seem to be combating it successfully
Months of people travelling around europe prior to lockdown for UK

In Belgium and the Netherlands, the virus spread with the help of people returning from their skiing holidays in Austria and the north of Italy. That's only part of it though, as there has been the constant traveling of people through Europe. Australia and New Zealand are much more isolated from the rest of the world.

Belgium had 140 deaths yesterday and 183 the day before. That's like around 750 Australians dying over 2 days. By the way, I believe most countries don't count people dying in retirement homes and I've seen reports with staff saying they can no longer handle the number of people dying.

Some aren't reporting them at all and some are reporting them with a delay. Iirc The daily death rates in France at about 1,000 are a combination of the days deaths plus nursing home deaths from a few days ago

Don't underestimate the role religion has had in the spread of COVID. The cult woman in South Korea, the 16,000 Mosque gathering in Malaysia, Indonesia's government saying that you can "pray the virus away" and now this. With the amount of religious nutjobs in the States, it will continue to spiral out of control there.

France too. Megachurch in Mulhouse linked to a cluster of coronavirus cases.

Italians also love going to church, having a smoke and are an older population. That combo with corona = disaster.

That link was in reference to the French church.

Boris taken to hospital.

This situation just continues to deteriorate. People celebrating on twitter are amongst the lowest life forms out there

Haha yep. I actually hear the word campaign quite a bit and still laugh. Can't even bring myself to say that anymore!

Yes those celebrating his poor health are just utter scum. I dont rate him as a leader but would never wish poor health on the bloke.

Does this mean the deputy is now in charge or os Boris calling the shots still? Hopefully he recovers fully shortly.

Yeah disgusting, same with Dutton. Don't know how people can be so horrid that they celebrate someones ill health that they've never met just because they have different views.

Still constantly seeing people attacking ScoMo with some ordinary comments too, think he has done OK considering the situation, in fact both sides have... who would've thought our two main parties could actually be responsible adults.

One of the men has been identified as Michael Hibberd’s brother.

Should be at home doing the right thing, tiny tinnie in pretty rough seas.....their poor families but geez how thick are some people.

I was going to post the other Nine News tweet that they made about it that made the same point about the restrictions but thought they were being insensitive to the situation.

But yeah, you’re not wrong that if they were at home because of the restrictions they would be safe now. Still a very scary situation for their families.

There'd be other people around to help too if there werent restrictions.

But its not really about restrictions when you see the conditions and the size of the boat, its just dumb.
