For anyone that may be interested here is a link to some photos of the Gabba fiveways that was when I started school at East Brisbane State adjacent to the ground in the late 1930's.

I used the love the man with the red flag and the bell minding the train crossing Stanley Street when I was a kid...of course.

Ahh Old Den… You have got me going… I used to work for VicRail in the early 80’s – and had on numerous occasions worked on the old suburban briquette run to the old Nth Fitzroy goods yard… Anyhow that’s all another story.

Had a dig around on the interwebbie for a couple more old pics - from "Around the Gabba"

And for balance [wink] around the Brunswick St Oval/Nth Fitzroy Good yard at the eastern side of the ground.

Railway yard top of pic, behind eastern end goals - note gasometers top right [nice pub there now - crn Alexander & Smith St yep about halfway to Vic 'wash my mouth-out' Park]

Good stuff blynd_freddie...nothing quite like old photographs, especially when they stir up activity in that wonderful thing that is our memories.

So is this what is now the GABBA Central Apartment block Where the hotel was?
If you look at the first pic that fred posted on the right is a tram. That building on the corner behind the tram is where the Apartments are now.

Nice thread. I remember the red flagman across the 5 ways in the mid 60's. My mum used to catch the tram from Greenslopes to do shopping at either Stones Corner and if she wanted a day out (haa haa) she would head onto the Gabba.

My uncle was one of the bell men for a while before becoming a full fledged guard.
Wasn't there a copper that was rather theatrical in his directing traffic back in the late 50's, early 60's?

There would have been personality cops at all complicated intersections in all the major cities, particularly after WW2 when the traffic started to hot up...the best and most famous that I remember in Bris was at the Normanby junction.

Could it be separate buildings cheek by jowl on small property parcels?

What you suggest [separate buildings] does makes sense Old Den, the building was originally named the Taylor-Heaslop Building, one hyphenated surname or the surnames of the two original owners?

I only have a limited knowledge but I have seen many inner Melbourne dwellings/terrace houses – which maybe similarly ‘semi-detached’, have a single shared joining wall, roof façade, tympanum and common themed parapets and ornaments, all typical of the late 1880’s [I used to own one 20 odd years ago]

Back to Logan Rd, further investigation one of the current occupants the – Enoteca restaurant - reminds me a little of one of my favourite Melbourne watering holes… the M.O.O. Bar [no, nothing to do with animal crackers] MOO is an acronym for Money Order Office and coincidently this building was also built in 1890.

^ Enoteca .................................................. ^ the M.O.O. Bar [Melb balance - wink]

Okay, that’s enough ‘look at me’ history for today… :p

Cheers John. My avatar pic is taken from the GABBA Appartments.

Now I know where I want to live if ever I move to Brissy!:D

Love seeing old photos like those in the thread....the detail and architecture of the buildings of old couldn't be repeated today...just won't see anything like them again..

My husband is into photography and we have been all around Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo taking photos of all the old buildings....and when you really really look at the finer details of the buildings, they are just unbelievably incredible..and yet I lived in Bendigo area for years...drove past most of them without really noticing anything except they were old...we take so much for granted, without actually looking..

Well can't think of a better reason to get you and hubby up next season then MM. There are some lovely old buildings in Brisbane. Guessing you would have seen them on previous trips, but there's always something being done so his pics would surely be different now. ;) ;) ;) :p

Wasn't going to make a new thread for this but just this morning came across these 'old timey' photos of Brisbane, some stunning photos in there. One of the Bellevue Hotel too, before old Joh got those brothers to run through over night.
