So this has come up on the "Good Call, Bad call" thread a few times.

Who do you think Melbourne should look at trading in at the end of this season, if anyone?

Are there any holes in our team that you think need filling?

For the purposes of this exercise, forget what we may have to give up to get someone, out of any player in the AFL who would you want at the MFC?

Feel free to throw in trade ideas as well if you like, but let your mind run free!

Be interesting to see what the fans think we need! For me, we still need a power forward. I think Jarryd Roughead should be someone we should look at going after. Even if Watts lives up to his full potential, I see him being a more up the ground kinda player like Riewoldt (the good one, not the Richmond one, lol). So we still need that guy deep in the goal square. There are players in our team already that could do an average job of it, but someone like Roughy could really tear it apart.

To get Roughy from the Hawks we would probably need to give up a KPP, and a first, and probably second round draft pick this year. The draft picks don't bother me, as we have more than enough young talent running around, many of whom can't currently break into the team. As for the KPP we would need to give up I think it would have to be maybe Rivers/Garland/Bate. Not saying I want any of those players gone, as I don't, but thats all I could really see getting the deal done.

So, what do you think?

That would make our forward line much more complete in a typical sense.

I'd offer first round pick and Rivers which wouldn't be enough, I don't see anyway we can get Roughead from Hawthorn without overpaying massively for him.

On the contrary I can't see him leaving Hawthorn.

As Dez! said it is hard to see how we would prize roughie out of their hands. Pelchen is a very hard man to do deals with by all accounts. Unless he wanted out of course.

I think that Hawkins could do really well at Melbourne. He is a young big bodied lead up forward. In time Watts will draw the no. 1 defender leaving Hawkins with the 2nd best. Would also be relativly cheap. His stocks are at an all time low and with the Cats aging could use an early pick or two in the coming drafts to inject some more youth.

Hawkins has struggled with an absolutely amazing midfield feeding him, I think we have the makings of an A grade midfield but if he can't cut it as the 2nd KPF in a champion side, what makes you think he could for us?

Agreed. Whole heartedly actually. I am a massive critic of his, but only because I see he has huge potential but he still looks and plays like a little boy. For a massive unit he really needs to start physically imposing himself.

I started a thread on the polls board asking about is worth on the open market and I see a cats supporter make a good point. All be it a veiled sledge against us. He says that given their midfield power and the existence of Mooney they don't really look for him which result is him running around like a goose.

I think he plays/intends to play a similar game to Mooney and with SJ and all of the mids has never had a decent crack at it. I just think with a change of scenery, more opportunity and some time to develop other blokes in and around his own age he could flourish.

I don't disagree with taking a look at the Tom-a-hawk. He definately has all the attributes to him, but at the moment hasn't delivered. I would only be interested if we got him cheap enough. Be willing to give up someone in the realms of Daniel Bell, or similar plus a second round draft pick. But to take in another unproven player, it would have to be a pretty cheap option.

That is actually quite a relevant point about the cats midfield not looking for him as often as others. He clearly has ability, I would be interested in him if we could get him cheaply but I doubt that is the case.

I'd be happy to part with our first rounder this year if we end up finishing outside the bottom 4.

To get rougie we'd have to be offering up some massive carrots. ie our 1st and 2nd rounder plus a KPD maybe Martin who can Ruck and play in the backline.

You seem to be forgetting that even finishing bottom 4 we would get pick #10 in the first round and pick #30 in the second plus Martin would get nowhere near Roughie.

We'd need to get ourselves another first round pick before they'd talk and even then with Pelchen being a complete douche he'd be asking for 5 first round picks.

We've got no chance of getting Roughead unless he wants out and nominates Melbourne.

Martin would fetch nothing.

I'd say 1st and 2nd RND + Jamar, and even then the picks would be too late.

Warnock and Bate maybe?

The obvious vacancies at the moment are a power forward which has been discussed above and a quality small defender to replace Wheels. The likes of Bartram, Cheney & Bennell have had a crack but for various reasons, don't provide the full package like a Whelan or a Wirrpanda.

If one of Maric, Bennell or Jetta could make the small forward position his own, I'd be interested in seeing Aussie tried there. He was playing in defence before he came to us.

Despite the fact that he has been playing okay up forward, I bennell is going to be a really good HBF for us, people on here are a bit hard on him IMO.

Roughead wont leave Hawthorn.

Rivers might be on the trading block or ask to be traded himself if he cant get a regular game. He's good enough to not be just depth.

Rivers is a SA and may wish to go home at seasons end. Both the Crows and PA could do with an extra tall in defence i would say.

There is no one tall forward on either list i would even look:

Tippett (paying way too much)
Henderson (not ready - doesnt solve any issues)
Tredrea (will retire)
Schultz (no way)
Westoff (no way)

Not that i want him but Scott Thompson seems an obvious offer if he wishes to leve the Crows and return to Melbourne as a fair trade.

Perhaps we could look at another ruckman as a back up for Jamar assuming he stays? Which ruckman are out of contract this year that we could look at? Would Matthew Leunberger be worth a look at?

Jesse White from Sydney would be a player i would chase, however is a Gold Coast boy so you would think if he leaves that where he would go. 196 cm 105 Full Forward who is struggling this year having to compete with Bradshaw, Goodes and usually a resting ruckman taking his space up. Had some good games and bags of goals last year and would give us that big body.
