I know a girl that will be one of the players, she's a regular at Crown. She said it was stressful and that she started smoking again after having quit last year.

But I'm a little confused. What's this other show "Australian Poker Hero"? To me just looke like competition between PokerStars and Full Tilt.

Whatever FullTilt can do Pokerstars can do better. Just like the record for most ever people in a tournament Full Tilt had going untill PS decided they just could'nt let then happen and crushed them.
I thought Tilt were copying Stars in this instance? I certainly heard of The Pokerstar before I heard of Australian Poker Hero..

There are two completely different shows.

The first is The Poker Star. Its poker backer is PokerStars and will be hosted by Joe Hachem, obv as he is recognisable to Australian poker players. The idea came originally from ONE HD which wanted to have a mix of sport (kind of) and reality TV (kind of). PokerStars got on board and its format is pretty similar to Big Brother, in which people were picked on for a variety of reasons, to live in the pokerhouse or something... The concept was around about January this year IIRC, the shooting got done in June and it will be shown in the upcoming months...

Australian Poker Hero was more of a channel 9 attempting to get one up on Ten. It was originally started by Nine, and they decided to team up with Australian Poker League (APL) Full Tilt Poker.org and Crown Casino. The show is focused more on the actual poker competition AFAIK, kind of like Australian Idol, how qualification is more open compared to BB. Each week will feature x amount of contestants, who will play a SnG pretty much with the winner of each SnG getting a spot in the Aussie Millions. The idea of APH was first floated in April IIRC and qualifiers began in July at APL State Finals and online at fulltilt.org. It starts showing in October IIRC...

A lot of this is hearsay and opinion without much proof to back it up or prove it correct, kind of like my opinions on how to play AK OOP to the best player in the casino...:D

Even though my friend hasn't confirmed (confidentiality and all), this sounds like what she did.

• Ben (aged 37, Victoria, owns and runs an advertising agency)
• Amanda (aged 33, Victoria, speech pathologist, mother of two)
• Chris (aged 26, Victoria, won a freeroll to earn a spot on the show)
• Martin (aged 48, NSW, emergency services worker, father of two)
• Sally (aged 24, NSW, bookmaker, been playing poker for three years)
• Donna (aged 29, NSW, marketing executive, former business owner)
• Josh (aged 27, Victoria, lawyer and classical pianist, keen online player)
• Katie (aged 26, Victoria, professional golfer, started out as a pub poker player)
• Shane (aged 26, NSW, sales consultant, like to wear poker paraphernalia)
• Ron (aged 60, Queensland, retired, Vietnam veteran, cancer survivor)
• Tom (aged 26, Victoria, bar owner, enjoys social aspects of poker)

I can't see this show appealing to anyone who's serious about poker TBH. The poker will be average at best.

I think you'd be mistaken. Amanda has nearly $40,000 in tournament earnings from Crown in the past 2 years and is a very solid cash player.

[x] Lame format
[x] Joe Hachem ego fest
[x] Those chicks (the ones in the bottom 3 at least) suck real bad
[ ] Interviewing people is a good way to discern poker skill, style or whatever

Haha yes, my thoughts exactly. My god that was terrible; is it that hard to show blinds, chip stacks, and actually go through an entire hand properly without all their terrible editing!?! My god.

I'll tell you this much. You won't be getting a good fix of poker from watching the show. The producers want to try to appeal to a wider audience, so the poker tournaments will only be a small part of the show. The challenge in Episode 1 was merely for the contestants to get to know each other, in future episodes the challenges will be far more interesting.

I was surprised that the girls were not dolled up more, I don't know if that will change in subsequent episodes. I thought the young girl on the right may have been eliminated, but I had forgotten about the "meet & greet" challenge.

For me, Hachem speaks too deliberately, too rehearsed, it's like everything he says he is reading off an autocue.

Perhaps it should have been called 'The Poker Apprentice'; Hachem playing the Donald Trump role and Lee Nelson as George, the old dude exec who observed the challenges ("he'll be my eyes and ears").

Possibly just the editing process at work, but Ben and Shane are co-winners of 'Tool of the Week' (although Josh was a contender).

As red+black noted, it looks to be aimed at a wider audience, which is understandable.

I heard a rumour that extended coverage of each week's poker tournament would be available somewhere. Late Fridays on One HD or online, will let you all know if I hear anything.

Hopefully once it gets down to the final 6 or so they get a little more serious about showing us some bettter coverage of the poker.

I didnt mind it... even tho none of them are going to be pokerstars atleast its something about poker...

If it gets 1 more person playing poker all is good :)
