Be warned: this film is a dud of the highest order.

And Nick Cave is to blame.

Or, I should say, his overbearing score and underdeveloped screenplay is to blame.

Passive central character, sloppy structure, weak characterizations.

What make this even funnier (maybe sadder?) is that while promoting this film, Cave has said the main difference between himself and screenwriters is one thing...

Talent.

Well Nick, as a screenwriter, you make an awfully good songwriter.

Your opinion seems to be at odds with just about every review I've read. I'll see the film and make up my mind however.

So, can you be a little more specific with your criticism? Weak characters, or non-development of same, plausibility, ..... what?

Saw it today. One of the best Australian films i've seen.
Maybe magpiespower will just have to hang out for the Doom movie....or maybe there will be another fast and furious to cater to his level of taste.

I've heard so many good things about it that I will definitely see it. A bad review is probably good for the state of mind. Nothing worse than going to a movie that has been so pumped up that you're disappointed because it didn't live up to expectation. Makes it hard to rate the movies objectively.

Flat, one-dimensional stereotypes.

The biggest problem is that Guy Pearce's character is PASSIVE.

He is the central character in the film but doesn't drive the story.

And that's just criminal.

Obviously haven't seen many Australian films.

Either a troll or a first class idiot. Probably both.

My level of taste goes far beyond the multiplex.

True.

Although Paul Byrnes is quite scathing in his Sydney Morning Herald review.

I didn't mind it, it's definitely worth seeing. A particular gory CG part was excellent.

Overall, the story seemed a little muffled and weak, especially from the Burns brother's view. i.e. we don't find out enough about Charlie and Arthur (more than the obvious).

How do the punters reckon it stacks up against another of Caves efforts..

"Ghosts of the Civil dead"...?

Flawed as it is, 'Civil Dead' is vastly superior.

This is a great film and I think that the score is actually one of it's strengths. It is being shown on ABC1 at 8:30 tonight and is definitely worth a look.

don't get all the nick cave adulation. personally think his voice sounds like shit and that none of his songs have any sort of rhythm at all.
while i'm at it, he looks like a first class knob too, do something decent with whatever hair you have left and shave off the stupid moustache as well, you look like a pimp.

Oh dear.

Yeah I'll be watching it again. I reckon the OP makes some reasonable points but I certainly didn't dislike it as much.

I wouldn't say I'm a Nick Cave fan as such but I admire the fact his music is pretty evocative and distinctive - and this film is kind of the same.

Also - I'll watch Ray Winstone in anything.

Fantastic cast. David Wenham such a good actor.

How stark the environment is, looks like Mars not part of our own country.
