I cant believe there isnt one of these.

What an absolute champion.

A class above everyone else on the circuit.

Roddick had been tearing apart people in previous rounds, but Federer thrashed the pants off him.

Totally agree - the guy is just awesome.

Last night was pretty close to the perfect game of tennis. Some of the shots he pulled off were amazing.

The guy is close to being the greatest ever.

Well who is better than him? Sampras? I'd say he'd have him. Newcombe? The fitness and professionalism of tennis today far exceeds that of yesteryear and i undoubtedly believe that newcombe at the top of his powers would not stand a chance of making the top 10 of todays mens rankings.

Federer = The Greatest Ever.

Laver is the only player that I think is better than Federer. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of him play but winning 2 calender grand slams about 10 years or so apart is quite an achievement.

However if Federer remains injury free and can notch up a couple of French Opens and possibly even a calender grand slam then he will undoubtedly be considered the best ever.

How lucky are we to be able to watch a player of his calibre at his peak?

He is the only person that has the complete game. There are no weaknesses.

Some shot you just sit there shaking your head in wonderment.

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher are the only other sportsmen I'd put in his league.

Courier noted last night that apart from losing to Nadal in the final of the French Open, he was never close to losing in all his other grand slam tournaments.

With the depth in the men's game at the moment this is a staggering achievement.

he is continuing to get further and further ahead of everyone else in the game... what a marvel.

Watch him draw level with Pete's 14 slams next year - my guess is back here in Melbourne...and then blow away the record in the coming years..

I'm calling 20+ slams before he's done...and my wallet hopes he does it as well!

The funny things is the guy is actually liked as well as being respected by his peers. It's almost as if they'd like to see him win the whole thing (all 4 Slams), regardless of their own ambitions. Federer is once-in-a-generation good: the next year or two we may see something really, really special and be treated to the next Grand Slam winner.

I'm too young for Laver, Budge, Emerson; Sampras never put smiles on faces - just bludgeoned opponents. Federer will almost present something new and head-shaking whenever he steps out on court - his form of dominance is rarely boring. Who else hits half-volley passing shots from both sides?

Let's hope he finally figures out the claycourters.

an aside: he's a cricket fan...how can you dislike the guy?

Personally I agree with you. I believe he is easily the best player I have ever seen as far as the way he plays the game. He doesn't just rely on a huge serve and has no real weakness.

Statistically one could argue that Sampras/ Laver are still the greatest ever due to the no. of grand slam events/ grand slams that they have won.

Federer would beat Laver in canter but in his day Laver would have been awesome.

He's becoming the Don Bradman of Tennis. Legend, God, invincible. Getting close to it.

if he wins the French this year, that will probably just about finish off the argument...

...and if he wins the French, the Grand Slam is definitely on. If he won that I think there would be no doubt.

He's certainly the best I've seen but I read an article on Rod Laver today and whilst he is a HUGE Federer fan, he raises the point that when he played they used much smaller racquets. It's hard to compare blokes when technology gives current day players such an advantage. So many shots these days don't have to come off the middle of the racquet.

Much better than Sampras. Would crush Sampras on any surface. Sampras had a giant serve, but his backhand was relatively weak, wasnt nearly as enduring (not his fault I know) and was an arrogant pig. Federer is a class above Sampras, both on and off the court.

Sampras in his hey-day would beat Federer on grass I reckon 7 times out of 10...and that's a proper grass court - not what they've been serving up at Wimbledon the last few years...

Sampras' serve volley game is second to none that I've seen - just a beautiful game that was perfect for the grass courts.

On clay I reckon Rog would win pretty much every time...

Hard courts / Rebound Ace would be 50/50 I'd think - would have been awesome to watch

LOL at the suggestion that Gonzo has a chance against Fed.

Straight sets if Fed actually wants to play. 4 If he's rooting around.

Gonzo is definitely a chance... but would have to play out of his skin. Question is can he bring it tomorrow night?

Still reckon Roger will get over the line, but has the potential to be an amazing match.

Andy Roddick anyone??

Lots of people were saying the same thing.

Remind me what happened there?

Laver was a great player, i am not disagreeing with that, but one can pull off amazing shots and win slams like he did because his opponents weren't up to scratch. Federer manages to destroy opponents with a vast array of shots, none (apart from perhaps backhand) is exceptionally better than the other. Not only this, but men's tennis today is so deep in talent and ability. Look at the top 20 players, they are all extremely talented and powerful and are all just unlucky that they weren't born say 20 years ago! The better your competition, the higher you have to strive, and Fed has reached the top of the pile, and that pile is probably the tallest ever.

Gonzo is playing at a different level to Roddick.

Roddick doesn't have the ability to hit the winners that Gonzo does.

Having said all this I still expect Federer to win, but stranger things have happened.
