I disagree about people that are racist/sexist here aren't racist/sexist in public, I'd say they're one and the same. People probably push their own line %10 online due to the anonymous of it all but they're racist/sexist online they're probably racist/sexist in real life.

Agree that if you are racist / sexist on line then you are racist / sexist full stop. No doubt in my mind though that people say things on the internet that they would never say to someone in real life. Try reading through Facebook comments to get a feel for it. I don't hear those things anywhere I go and don't think I live a sheltered life.

I'd also like to defend the 25's and under as being better in this way than the older than 25's

Not sure if this was in response to my earlier post but will say I wholeheartedly agree with you. My point is that these days when I do hear something racist / sexist coming out of the mouth of an under 25 then it reminds me that we still have some way to go. It is a multi-generational process to change I expect.

But that is exactly the discussion we're having, its not for another day, its right now. When half of Port's members are women, yet the representation of women here is virtually nil, we know what is contributing heavily to that.

And even with your comment that most people discussed here are men, I wasn't talking about volume, but percentage of comment within each gender segment when they are discussed. There clearly isn't any volume of discussion of women in any area that exceeds similar discussion of men in the same areas, but when women are discussed it is dispropriationately about appearance (good or bad).

Again though that's as for every 100 males talked about here 98 are going to be football or football related people. There just isn't the female football industry to have such a correspondingly high 98 out of 100 rate for talk about females. If this was BigTennis instead of BigFooty I'd hazard the numbers would be much closer for non-appearance based discussion.

Even statically adjusting number of men vs. number of women discussed you can't wave away the premise of this forum as a, if not the contributing factor. I don't want into get into a scooter brother genetics, epigenetics nature vs. nurture argument, but people of both genders are going to want to watch the highest level of competition and talk about it mostly. And that ensures short of going Gatica and gene manipulation bringing females into AFL top level, that most talk here will remain around men, with the female league / team not of interest to a large proportion.

The curve might be less dramatic but it would still be completely obvious, and it certainly doesn't in any way excuse the degree to which this forum is acting.

Even in the one recent thread we have that is explicitly about women's football, we have already seen a trend of commenting on appearance that is hugely disproportionate to any other given Bigfooty thread.

That measure won't work, because the people doing this stuff have convinced themselves that they're not doing anything wrong, to varying degrees of conviction.

Which is the over-arching one of does the Board set a minimum standard that must be met, that will leave some unhappy that some talk still can take place or be highly prescriptive and leave some unhappy that some talk can no longer take place. One of the highlights of this board is its robustness and the lack of Port supporters only threads. I'd hate to see us start down that road of straight jacketing the board to the tip toeing required on some other teams boards (including by their own supporters). If I wanted group think I'd have tried to buy the rights to TPFP when it died.

I am with you Portia .. I see some posts on here and shake my head at what's been posted. I think that the report button should be used a bit more. There is no need for sexist remarks or photo's etc...

yes i too would like to hear from the women who post here about why they don't post here

i don't know what to add to this but it is fitting that this kind of discussion is (most likely) first taking place on bigfooty on the Port board. heavy lifters trend setters forward thinkers. etc. we're only going to get somewhere with this kind of start.

the way men have been funnelled into thinking about women has left me puzzled and annoyed many times this year. i blame the system and not the people themselves because they only think about what they have been fed, their brains aren't really used. i've watched dog-shit-dumb friends of mine 'like' dog-shit-dumb posts on facebook all year and listened to them gain tremendous levels of hatred and stupidity, from stuff like the "tumblr posts that trigger PTSD" page or whatever it is, or nothing stories from channel 7 and 9 news pages about a woman who was bashed by a man which just get a whole bunch of animals pounding away at their keyboards looking for an enemy in comment sections to further their nothing view that they hate something real bad. ["she was obviously a ****!!"] i said to my friend outright "you realise you've just become one of those idiots that reads facebook posts that rejig posts from other sites to create an agenda" but these dog-shit-dumb guys just shake their heads and go "nah man" because they don't really care at the end of the day.
