Thread is starting to run its course imo. The longer it goes the more likely it will become a shitfight of some form.

As others have said, it's very hard for moderation alone to drive a culture adjustment.

Internet forums are driven by their heavy hitters. The bigger personalities and more frequent posters have a lot of sway over which direction a forum goes. Moderation can affect that, but only so far.

A thread like this, by a forum heavy hitter, is how you get an issue noticed. There is no other way to do it. It would have been lost in the get-a-get thread or similar.

People need to be told when they need to adjust their behavior, and a thread like this weeding out the kinds of people who complain about "political correctness gone mad" or "social justice warriors" so they can go on The List, can only be a good thing.

I'm not saying that at all, what I am saying is that in threads with no specific discussion topic, it's not unreasonable for people to talk about who they find attractive.

In on topic discussion, that can discourage input and participation and make people feel unwelcome, the question is, does that mean we cut out the homoerotic innuendo as well? Seeing as some players are aware of us and have given the forum their time as well.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with calling someone attractive, but there is a big difference to how it's done on a forum like this in relation to men and women. Obviously there is a fair bit of homoerotic innuendo directed at some of our players, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to how we speak about them as footballers, off field people, leaders etc etc etc.

Also, as has been said, objectifying men just isn't an issue. At all. It doesn't have the historical context behind it.

I really hope we end up with a women's team and that team gets a fair bit of discussion on this board, so there is an outlet for speaking about women in a positive fashion that is totally unrelated to how they look.

At what page count does this thread get renamed to 'The medium things'? o_O

I vote for "Why is this forum such a sausage fest?"

I think there is discussion where women in the public do get credited on their achievements and what they do.

However I also agree in the case of female sports people, most of them aren't treated equally though. I do not remember any of that happening recently though when UFC was a hot topic, but that only sticks out because it is an exception.

Personally, I don't care much for female sports, but there's also an awful lot of male sports I don't care for either. MMA is probably the female sport I have the most interest, and it is very rare for MMA fans to address the appearance of a fighter RATHER than talk about her ability, and that isn't something I've seen when it comes to footy, cricket, gridiron, tennis, etc. That is a problem that needs addressing and attitude that need changing.

If you don't have anything relevant to say, maybe best not to say it?

This thread has been good for 'sorting the wheat from the chaff', so to speak.

Speaking of this stuff, I post regularly on a stock exchange forum. There is a chick there who is being relentlessly harrassed every time she makes a post. She changed her DP where she had sunglasses on to one where she didn't. Naturally, this caused quite a stir. "What happened to your sunglasses? You look sexy without them on" ad nauseum.

Unbelievable.

Champ. You are a particularly esteemed and respected member of this forum. I throughly enjoy listening to you on the podcast and reading your thoughts on the game.

Why drag all this shit up? Are you bored because it's the off-season? I mean yeah the occasional comment that could be viewed as sexist gets thrown around, but this board is pretty tame. I don't see the need to play fun police. I'm not having a crack at you, this time, I just do not understand your reasoning behind starting a crusade that is never going to lead anywhere.

mate did you listen to our president and CEO at the B&F (the speeches are on youtube)? did you hear what KT said about paddy ryder? "thank you paddy and jess for choosing our club". did you hear how seriously he spoke of the anti-domestic violence campaign we're going to be a part of next year? our club is setting the trend into all this leading somewhere so you may as well start understanding now before you start disliking things our club does -- which would be horrible as all its doing is trying to stop us from using sexist language. this is like - and i hate using testy analogies - a whole bunch of people not understanding why their language is racist because they've used it for so long, and then plant their feet down and get arced up when it's implied this language is not that great to use against other people.

this is never gonna work unless it comes straight from the role models mouths though, the old school footy-is-for-blokes types will not listen to anyone but our star players delivering messages the right way for them. i bet ollie wines will be the face of his campaign, he has to, they have to do something clever with addressing the "we played like girls" line.

i'm proud of the club for trendsetting in such sensitive areas, it didn't have to do this, we have the best baddest biggest reputation in the land as being hated by everyone who doesn't love us, nobody is harder than port adelaide, we have the best "hard club" rep that we could choose to build on yet what are we doing? making everything about inclusion and women and family. nothing shows how hard you really are than being bold about the toughest issues!

For many years I have found BF as that great little place where you can log onto and forget about all the horrible things that are going on in the world and at times in my work/personal life and be informed on all things footy with some light hearted banter thrown in.
Sure, there are some posts that teeter on the wrong side of offending the PC Mob but they're generally done without too much malice intended and should be brushed off without irreversible damage being done.
Please lets not make this place too vanilla cos it's not as broke as this thread is implying.

So not being a misogynist is too vanilla for you?

I didn't realise the boys club was so avant garde

had visions of a TV ad of some kind with him being whipped on a basketball court by Erin, then whipped on a bike ride by Anna Meares, etc.

Ouch. I'm not perfect.

Do you renounce Satan and all his works??!

Seriously though, I think many of us have a few such posts in our 'history', even if we don't remember them all. Time for such posting to *be* history. Note "posting" not "postings". It *is* the small things.

That pretty much just demonstrates how easy it is to fall back into posting habits like that.

I'm fine with my hypocricy pointed out because I'm at least aware of it and I'm not proud of it.

That one example is likely enough for the rest of us to consider though. We don't need more.

Don't worry about it, we've all got indescretions, Portia was at pains to highlight her own in the OP. You're on-side for the most part and that's all you can expect from yourself and others.

Well done m8 you broke this conspiracy WIDE OPEN. Here, have an Iced Vovo and a pat on the head.
If he doesn't want it ill take it , I love ice vovos?

Boys will be boys, all people should not be crucified for a few flippin comment's.

That's literally what I tell people when I meet them "I am a heavy-hitter on SizeableMitre please like me"
