News The "Smart Engine" Anti-Virus - Warning!

Today my laptop was invaded by Smart Engine.

It's a virus that tells you your computer has been invaded by all sorts of problems - spyware, trojans, etc - and invites you to pay about $100 for a solution.

So it's a scam but your computer keeps getting all sorts of alert messages that normal firewall and virus protections are unable to prevent or fix. The more you ignore it, the worse it gets.

There's a site called "Loaris.com" which has what appears to be an effective solution (cost, about $50). My fingers and legs are crossed.

Computer literate people might be able to fix the problem themselves for free.

Before anyone is attacked I suggest they Google "Smart Engine" and do a little preliminary research.

Good luck, friends!

Thanks for the headsup Mr R. Thankfully I'm able to call the computer tech's our company has to oversee our system, when things get out of hand. But, given I'm on a break from work with the bambino's arrival, this may come in handy. Cheers!

Computers are a wonderful asset but when you know nothing about how they work and you have no "support" it's pretty scarey when things start to go wrong, TT.

A link to a site which seems to be a lot more legitimate than the one you posted Mr reliable http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-smart-engine.html.

Also if you haven't already done so mate I would download this http://www.2-spyware.com/review-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html it has a free version so you don't have to worry about cost.

Secondly I would look to download an Anti-virus solution. I have listed a few below I recommend you check them out and see which one you like most and maybe look at buying that one or something. If money is an issue some like Microsoft and Avast offer a free version.

Avast
Avira they also have a free version which you can find here Avira Free Edition
Bitdefender
F-secure
ESET
PC Tools
Microsoft Security Essentials

If you need any more help feel free to ask.

I have Norton installed, and I pay about $80 a year to renew it. I've been told it makes my computer heaps slower, but when I read posts like Mr Reliable's OP, I like to think the poor performance is also helping me avoid such things as Smart Engine. Coz I wouldn't have a fricken clue how to fix that sort of stuff.

Yeah, I've had a few of these nasty things. Haven't had the smart engine one but there are heaps of others exactly the same that go by different names.

When I was trying to get rid of it I found some helpful and easy to follow videos on youtube.

Did a search for smart engine and this one came up:

Not sure how helpful it will be but it's worth a try before you shell out $50.
