IN my analysis of what ive read seen, read and listened to so far in 2009 our team for round 1 will probably look something like this:

B: Raines Thursfield Newman
HB: McGuane Moore Tambling
C: Richardson Tuck White
HF: Deledio Riewoldt Morton
F:Brown Hughes Schulz
R: Simmonds Cousins Foley
INT:Thomson Jackson Polo Vickery
EMG(from):Conners Edwards Hislop Nahas McMahon Rance Bowden
INJ(otherwise would be in): Cotchin Coughlin Johnson

The steamer at full forward must fire this season - FF is the massive hole in our team. its now or never for cleve although i expect both him and the sarge to be south of the border on 2010. Perhaps Tyrone might need to thrown to the wolves at FF this season if cleve dogs it.

Tambo i am a fan of, and hence i have given time to improve as he has had to make more changes to his life them some guy getting drafted from ballarat or danadenong. But i think he may be ready to fire come the season proper across half-back running off the shoulders of foley, cousins, tuck and thomson. There is no more time for excuses out on the field if he is injured (OP is the rumour) let us know and dont play him.

Ideally i would like both conners and rance in the team at the expense of either mcgaune schulz and hughes but i think team selection in round 1 will be relatively known entities. I am worried about the forward lines ability to contest at ground level and hold the play in our fwd50. perhaps try newman as a small forward for periods of a game.

I've got a feeling that Bowden will be tried at FF this season too.

Is a good mark, and has footy smarts. Not a bad shot for goal either.

Plus if he's shooting for goal we won't be worried about him turning the ball over! :D

Defensive pressure is a massive problem for us accross the board and it's very noticeable in the forward line.
- Morton has worked on this and he must play deep forward but not full forward. He is better when he is not the main target.
- Bowden will also play a role up forward this year. He was played forward in the intra club and his smarts will catch out many defenders this year. After his spell in the seconds last year he knows he must tackle to keep his spot.
- Shulz should lose his spot to Rance this year and he should be traded at the end of the year. Post, from what i have seen, will be far too good to play in the seconds and he will take the swingman role. I'd be tempted to play a backline of

Newman Thursty Moore
Rance McGuane Raines

this gives us hardness, hight and run and plenty of flexibility. Moore and Rance can play talls and mediums and Rance is a very attacking backman.

Despite Tambling having a couple of outstanding games as a half back i think he should be played as a half-forward this year. His overhead marking and leading was very good during the game against the pies and he has a pretty good sidestep which can get him having shots on goals. I don't think he is 100% but he is capable.

Cleve Hughes and JR must play key forward this year and be given every opportunity. They will take the two best tall backs and hopefully free things up for Brown, Morton, Deledio and Richo when they drift deep.

Vickery doesn't have the conditioning yet to play at his best for extended periods however when he does Hughes's spot may be under threat.

Connors - despite talent is not best 22 as he doesn't work hard enough for long enough.

Here's my side for round 1 with no heed paid to names and reputations.

Newman Thursty Moore
Rance McGuane Raines
Richo Tuck Deledio
Brown Jack R Tambling
Morton Hughes Bowden
Foll: Simmonds, Axel, Cousins
Inter: Graham, White, Thomson, Jackson

- Johnson must be left out
- McMahon doesn't get a gig due to inability to work under pressure and to try out Geelong like backline structure.
-Edwards and Polo are very unlucky

Bowden isn't a forward's shadow.

Before you know it Terry will fall back on old habits as soon as we have trouble down back, and Bowden will be running around the backline again.

Bowden in the Forward line is a smoke screen...

i hope im wrong, but hughes wont do anything this season. He is a big unit now but is predominantly a lead up player and doesn't know how to use his body, and add the fact his mobility is terrible.

I think maybe that at the end of the season we should go after Mitch Thorp who in my opinion shows a lot more than steamer.

But hopefully im wrong as we really need a FF

McGuane needs to be in the side. He's the only player to show any mongrel - something the Tiges lack.

It's definetely a big year for both of them, both have a lot of knockers and a few advocates.

Tambling for all he cops is still probably in most peoples best 22, so regardless of how good he should be as a number 4 pick he still does enough to get a game each week and until he's not then he shouldn't really be bagged. Sure he might not be the amazing gun he was in his juniors but he can still be a valuable player.

Hughes cops it a lot for someone who's played under 20 games and only 19(or is he 20? i don't know lol, but he's young)
A few good games and building some confidence and he could bob up with around 30 goals this year, that would be enough and personally I'd be pretty happy with that from FF seeing as that's a position that hasn't been claimed yet.

McGuane has to stay in the side. He along with Thursfield and Moore starting to form a very good defensive unit in the second half of the year which was one of the main reasons we started to win games. He's willing to crash the packs and is a pretty decent mark too.

what has conners ever done to be in the 22 did you watch last year mc gaune was the best backman we had played on all the big guns and beat most and is hard

I Agree, but i think Rance has potential to be a far better player than Mcguane. But i dont think Mcguane, Moore, Rance and Thursfield can play in a back 6. I think schulz/connors would be a 50/50 decision. connors has the ability to easily be in the best 22 every week - just not the application in the past, while schulz offers flexibility as he can play at both ends and is very mobile for a man his size.

I liked your post and I understand where your coming from, I take it your team is based on recent form?, Only change I would make would be to bring in Polo who has looked quite solid, Tambling to the bench and and I would have White just ahead of Thomson so he just misses out. Cleve is in but must be on final chance.

What's great is that our list is at a point were spots are just so competitive. we haven't had something like this for a number of years and the fact its obvious as we try and formulate a starting line up is a big PLUS. Polo, White, Jackson, Thompson, Hislop, edwards are now in my eyes in a group that will be competing for that final spot on the team sheet as bench players.

Get OFF CLeve! Give the guy a chance...I like him and I think he must simply deliver this year...you can;t cut ties and a bag a player after just 18 or 19 games.

MCMAHON is interesting. We recruited him specifically as a rebounding defender hoping to add a bit more class and pace. However he's only been moderately successful, and I would much prefer to see RANCE get the chance off half back...I reckon jordie turns it over too often...

I think this is tamblings year to shine. The spotlights seems to have finally passed him in reagrds to the Franklin issue...and I think hes shown some positive signs that this year could be his.

I've got an idea. How about we play a big bloke who can take a grab and run all day at FF? Someone like...I dunno...Matthew Richardson?

Moving Richo to the wing might have been good for Richo, but is it good for the team? IMO, no, especially with these rolling zones, we need a viable bail out goalsquare option, and unfortunately Hughes isn't ready to be that yet.
