!!!WARNING!!!
This may seem optimistic, and I'm open to any criticism from Carlton supporters. but trolls piss off.

After watching the horrific loss to Richmond; there were 2 things that stood out to me.

1) Match Fitness. This was the smaller of the two and I'll start with this. It came down to the group not wanting the ball enough; our tackles were shite and our intensity in the second half was poor. I think the lack of focus because of all the media attention as well as Fev's much publicized...err... thing + a few of our guys weren't 100% contributed to this.

2) Structure. This is it. This is where it all comes down to. This is why we lost the game. I'll start with the ruck combo. Lets face it; ackland/hampson would prob be a preferable option to cloke for the ruck. So our star midfield couldn't have as much effect.
The bigger problem was our forward line. I'll get to the backline later; but seriously...
Fev was underdone, not focused, and the distraction clearly showed. 2 goals is simply not good enough. But it wasn't all his fault. Without another solid target, (i.e. Fisher or Waite) the opposition were able to double team him in contested marks or chop him off by playing in front. Fair enough he did miss a few marks on the lead; but geez we were screaming out for help.
Edwards could find the ball as no-one really cared about him; but when he kicked for goal he was shocking. Also his spoil on Fev...i can't even talk about it.
We get Fisher back, and suddenly we have 2 reliable hands, 2 reliable kicks at goal. If they double team Fev, Fisher will make them pay. If they don't go all out on Fev; well Fev will destroy them.
Defence: Most defences can't take a rebound as everyone's running and out of position. When our forwards just couldn't grab, so many rebounds were launched which caused the problem. In the tight contests we were able to man them; and we desperately need Waite and Setanta to take on the likes of Richo/Deledio.

Gee I'm not sure I agree that fitness was the smaller of the 2. I watched the game and it was clear that Richmond's fitness levels were superior and that was really the only reason they won. Half way through the third quarter Carlton were 15 points in front and looked in control of the game. Then they stopped running whilst Richmond took it up a level.

seriosly fev underdone??? only read how he was in the best "form" of hes
career stop with all the bloody excuses, there are no excuses in a round 1 game !!!!!!

I thought Fev worked hard escpecially to start. He chased and tackled and made a target. In the second half the ball was not coming down much and when it was it was delivered poorly. Agree the lead up was a disgrace but I think he was servicable!

You lost me here. Ackland has shown nothing in his time and Hampson is yet to make his mark on the game (although I think he can and will have an impact this year).

Cloke was servicable on Thursday night, and is a smart tap ruckmen when he gets first hands to the ball. Yes I know he is shorter than your ideal ruckman...but for me at this stage he is still our number one by a clear margin.

We're in big trouble if we can't get the forward line to function properly.
The missed shots at goal really hurt us against Richmond. If that is the kind of score we can kick against a wooden spooner, what will we kick against sides like Geelong or St Kilda. Until Fish comes back I think we need Waite up forward...this will at least stretch the oppositions defence. When we started to slow down in the 3rd quarter we tended to revert to the "bang it to Fev / bang it to a pack" tactic. Not enough movement in the forward 50 for mine.
People seem to forget we lost two of our biggest goal kickers in Lappin and Whitnall.....who will replace them?

Just as I stated, Cloke was servicable. I didn't say he tore Simmonds a new one, but he competed well, and looked solid around the ground, not so much at the centre bounces.

Stats dont always tell the story, but he is one of a very select few who could hold his head up.
