Yes.

You've obviously never been there, so don't pretend you know different.

You can take a look at the number of trailers at Fishery beach wharf in January. Be lucky to be 20 there. Most people do not have boats.

Mate, I was going to Bremer when you needed a 4WD to get there...way before the pub was built and probably whilst you were still in nappies.

Probably even knew your old man...he would've been one of those people who thought it was his own personal domain, and would take a FREEZER FULL OF FILLETS for his families consumption and think nothing of it.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

The combined catch of all the recreational fisherman at Bremer Bay for an entire year is less than what a single trawler takes in 1 trip. And Bight Redfish are a species targeted by commercial trawlers, with a quota of over 2000 tonnes. The impact of recreational fishing in comparison is negligible.

So yeah you are right that I would be pretty peeved if Fisheries moved to cut recreational bag limits of a species of abundant fish for which they issue over 2000 tons of trawling quota a year. The sensible thing in terms of sustainability would be to cut the trawling quota first.

You know that Magic Pudding that you seem so attached to??

It's not real.

Every thing has its limit and despite your most fervent of desires, they won't miraculously regenerate, just because you want them to.

So individuals are the issue, not the commercial trawlers?

Actually, living things do regenerate. It's not magical. It's called having babies.

Don't be bloody silly. Of course it is a combination of the two.

However, to downplay the impact of recreational fishers...especially when we see pics like magic pudding ydraw posted...is bloody stupid beyond words.

Quality and in depth analysis there Einstein.

Its always amazed me about Australia...that builders don't build houses when it's raining...and the weathers to bad to fish...

If that was the case in the country of my birth we would never eat fish and still be in caves...

That aside...I understand the fun in fishing and it's great to have a good catch but when I see photos of what appear to be instances of "shooting fish in a barrel" and "greed more than need"...it annoys me to say the least.

I can't state to the sustainability of the southern fishery areas in WA but to me it seems excessive.

Quality post.

Your heritage, as much as mine as a Paddy, reflects the impact of 'the past'.

;)

See when I think of overuse, whether it be fish stocks, water consumption, logging, minerals, whatever. Yes both the individual and the corporations add to the issue.

Just that in my opinion, corporations are 95% of the problem, to me that's where the focus should be. Once they are sustainable then focus on the individual.

At the moment the individual is being targeted and the corporation let loose. All in the name of profits, revenues and taxes. Water consumption being a great example. Mining companies getting water use exemptions but I'm not allowed to use my bore water more than twice a week and told to keep my showers under 5 minutes.

Western Australia would have to have one of the best fish management systems in the world.

Considering how shit the weather is down there, I wonder how many days recreational fisherman can get out. If you factor in work that would not amount to a lot of rape and pillage.

The population of Bremer Bay is less than 300 people, so for most of the year there are no recreational fishers at all. It's mostly farmers on weekend trips and on their month off after harvest.

Western Australia would have to have one of the best fish management systems in the world.

And some of the most restrictive bag limits in the world given our fish stocks are so strong.

What Bushie doesn't seem to understand is that Red Snapper/Bight Redfish are abundant as ****, which is why you are allowed to catch a lot more of them than you are snapper or jewies.

Different species have different bag limits. It's not that complicated.

N/A

Except for the South Coast where you may take 8 Bight redfish and 8swallowtail,PLUS mixed daily bag limit of 5other demersal finfish.

(per person)

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Fishing-a...g_And_Size_Limits/Pages/Demersal-Finfish.aspx

Bag limits are more generous on the South Coast because there are far fewer fishers and it's the most fertile fishing ground on the planet. What you can see in that photograph is 26-27 red snapper, which is under the bag limit for 4 people.
How many of you had licences?

Maybe you're right but the Scots thought the cod would last forever and now we're down to mackerel..and not Spanish Mackerel.

Thing is I'm allowed to drink as much Balvenie as I like...but if I were to sit here slugging the stuff there would eventually be repercussions, both for me and my family...

Therefore...as a good thing, it's better to enjoy in moderation.

I've been fishing, not as much as I would like, but some. I fished a wee bit in Port Hedland and I fished in Scotland.

From that photo, by the time you've caught your third or fourth fish of the same type, and you haven't had to wait long between bites...its a bit ...Meh.

I'd rather catch a couple of them, maybe a Cobia a coral trout or a Spanish Mack...and leave knowing I've got a helluva lot of fish cleaning to do but satisfied with the few fights I've had and that I've got enough fish to last me and my mates for a few days with a few fillets for the freezer.

If you think an abundant species can't be decimated I would disagree...and a lineup of those fish in that photo just seemed, as I said before, excessive.

There are still cod there. They do grow back. It's very difficult to make an ocean species extinct (unlike river or lake populations which are far more vulnerable).

All of us?

We are members of a fishing club, having a licence is mandatory for all members.
That's good. Then you would also be aware of boat limits. You seem to have missed that part out.

They have even started dropping bag limits for bread and butter species.

Herring has been dropped to 12 , down from 30 last year.
I was told that trawling had a major factor in that decision.

No species has ever been decimated by people fishing with fishing rods.

It's netting that decimates fish stocks. A single trawler would catch more fish in one trip than all the recreational fisherman combined would take in a year.
