Been thinking about this over the weekend and I believe it is time for Richmond to become RUTHLESS again.
For the past 4 years we have given players chances, given them time to develop and have held onto injury prone players and under performers for too long. So it is time for Cameron, Wallace & co to make the hard decisions and cut players who are not going to take us forward. If it means we lose a player who some think may go on and be a star so be it.
Here is a list of players who should be feeling rather nervous about continuing on at Punt Rd next year:
Casserly - been on the list since 2005 and apart from 1 NAB cup game earlier this year has hardly looked like getting a run in the seniors. Might be a talented kid, but at 22 and with a injury list as long as your arm, the time has come for you to try your luck elsewhere.
Graham - Another who has been on the list for 3 years and has really struggled to get games. I know people say that talls take time to develop but Graham was a rookie pick who unfortunately just hasn't come on as well as hoped. If we are able to get either Warnock or Griffin then Graham could be on his way back to King Island.
Hyde - Was pretty much given the hint when he was allowed to lead the side off after the final training run. Was a player with plenty of potential prior to fracturing his skull against the Saints a few years ago. Now there are too many who have gone past him.
King - will be very lucky if he is retained and about the only thing that will save him is if he has a contract.
JON - a former top 10 draft pick who failed to take the opportunities given to him and repay the confidence Wallace showed in him at the start of the year. May be given 1 last chance though as Wallace does believe that players need a good 4 years before they can be labelled. Would gladly take a pick between 20 & 30 for him if it was offered.
Polak/Pettifer - I believe 1 will go and 1 will stay, unfortunately we can't afford to carry 2 long term injuries. So the club will have to make a decision. At the moment I would say Polak is the one who may end up being let go and that would only be on Doctors advice. Pettifer would go though if there was a chance Polak could come back in 2010.
Polo - Get the feeling he will be shopped around this year and may attract a bit of attention from rival clubs. If we can get a pick between 20-30 then I would let him go. Would also let him go if we could arrange a player swap. I wonder if pick 26, JON & Polo would get us Warnock & Mundy or pick 22 from Freo.
Tambling - Now this might get some people off side and I'll wear that but if a top 8 club was to offer us their first round pick for him I would seriously consider letting him go. After 4 years and 75 games he just doesn't look like he has come on as much as many hoped he would. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and make a hard call to get ahead in AFL. Having said that I wouldn't mind keeping him as he could end up being a valuable role type player when we are up and running.
As I said the time has come to make some calls on players who just haven't delievered or are seemingly injury prone. Some of you might not like the names of thrown up but if you really want to see this club move forward then being ruthless is the only way that is going to happen. Nursing players for 5+ years in the hope that they come good is a thing that should not happen any more. The time has come to either sink or swim.
