Opinion The Tom Young effect

Tom Young was traded around this time last year, what's he got to do with Collingwood anymore?

Well, potentially a little something at this time of year.

Tom was a young development player for us, but ended up superfluous to requirements. The Bulldogs took a punt on him in exchange for pick 71. That punt has paid off very well.

Tom has done extremely well this season and been a credit to himself ... and a credit to Collingwood's development program.

Ceglar got delisted and ended up debuting for Hawthorn - didn't set the world on fire, but no shame in that.

Hopefully this all adds a little more currency in the market for any young development players that are superfluous to our future requirements.

Take Paine as an example - didn't play a game in 2013. Maybe the club thinks that if T.Young had trade value then Paine may have some trade value too? (Yes, the club may also be intending to hang onto him too, was just using him as an example)

Well it's just a credit to our development program really. It's good to see that they are doing well elsewhere even though it would suck if their best games were against us. But like you said, it does add the potential of a higher trade value which we can use to benefit us.

Clutching at straws? :)

I like to think of it more like "1 percenters" ;)

Seriously though, I'd imagine that players from some clubs have higher market value than players from other clubs because of the club development / recruiting programs.

Like being at Barcelona's junior academy?

Still think it's a small stretch.
Can work the other way too.

"If the Pies couldn't make a player out of them with their resources, what hope have we got?"

Surely the take home message is that trading out a youngster (eg Tom Young) and getting a supposedly more proven mature body player (eg Russell) is not actually a panacea, and in fact can leave you looking like a dill?

Personally, I would rather be keeping the likes of Martin, Oxley, etc that taking some of the FA names that have been bandied around here.
