Collingwood’s preseason has officially commenced with the younger Magpies taking to the track under new coach Nathan Buckley.

Training alongside the patchy facial hair and developing torsos was the captain of the club, Nick Maxwell.

The majority of our senior crew won't return till November 21st though.

And anyone who questions why Nick Maxwell is the captain of our football club must be getting sick of having egg continuously placed on their face, he keeps showing remarkable leadership, time and time again.

Interesting to note that Max said Ugle and Seedsman were amongst the 12 odd at training. You would think that would make them safe from delisting.

It would be interesting to know who the others that trained were as it would give a good indication of which of our young talent will be retained for next year.

To be honest Matty, I haven't heard anyone questioning his leadership - it is his ability as a contributing member of the 22 that they (we) are questioning. And that is not something that can be proven wrong until round 1 next year.

I am pretty sure everyone (who is worth listening to, anyway) would agree that he is far and away the best leader in the playing group right now.

And pretty easily in our best 22

Yes, most of the Maxwell "naysayers" have been saying that he might find it hard to get into the best 22 next year, but some have also said Scott Pendlebury should take over as Captain, and I have continuously questioned why?

I just don't see any immediate replacement for Maxwell at the club, and I really do not want Pendles to be made captain just so he will stay at the club, that's not leadership, that's using a time honoured role as bait.

Maxwell is by far the best leader we have, and I think he's in our best 15 players when fit (which he wasn't for most of 2011), let alone our best 22. I mean the last time he was fit for a whole season, he was selected in the All Australian side, who outside of the 22 from last year has that ability and can play the role Maxwell does so effectively?

Time will tell all though.

Maxwell is in best 22 when u add in the boost he gives as a captain (leadership moral ect) and that wont change in 2012.

If pendlebury wants captaincy for taking a huge paycut and staying with the pies then give it to him. What better leadership can there be than taking a 50% paycut to stay with the team? that shows the young kids exactly what dedication and loyalty is, plus u cannot question his inspiring nature on field how he is never flustered.

I dont think we should blindly say Maxwell can only be captain. Best 22 yes, but if somone else is a better captain then give it to him, Pendlebury could be now his hitting a mature age.

Its a playing group vote right? they could give pendles the nod due to his amazing on field leadership

There really is no comparison to Maxwell for leadership on Collingwood's list. Maybe Ball is second-best.

As has been said before, captaincy and signing status should never be linked. You never give someone the captaincy just because they re-signed a contract, nor do you give it to them for taking a pay cut.

Pendles may get it one day, but in my opinion (as an outsider) I think he is considerably below Maxwell, and below Ball in terms of leadership.

Whether Maxwell is in best 22 is another discussion, and right now I think he is probably in the 20-23 range.

Even with a broken thumb and knuckle he is in our best 22. His 1%ers are crucial as well as his commitment and application. Without him on the field I think we're a worse side for it.

He was All Australian for a reason, and when he is fully fit and doesn't have internal bleeding or broken hands he'll be laughing at all of you.

This thread shouldn't be about Maxy.

Who was training? Who wasn't?

Names confirmed;

Ugle
Seedsman
Witts
Maxwell

Apart from that Maxwell states that all of the group (apart from him) is made up of 1st to 4th year players who weren't in the finals training squad.

So from that, I'd guess the likes of;

J.Thomas
Ceglar
Elliott
Yagmoor

would have also been there.

The official return date isn't until November 21st, but I'm sure some players will start to come back to training earlier then that, especially some that are trying to push for a spot in the 22-25.

When Maxy had his only great game for the year in the Prelim I started a toast thread in his honor, that still doesn't change the fact his form has been bordering on abysmal during the rest of the season. I realize that injuries had a huge hand in this but facts are facts.

So not exactly sure who here has the egg on their faces, the blind fanbois or rational posters...

Here's hoping we won't be having these discussions next year and he gets games on form and not just on his leadership credentials.

Very true

Being captain will never be part of contract negotiations at Collingwood, and nor should it be. Pendles has outstanding leadership qualities which is exactly why he would never ever make being captain a negotiating tool. If he is the best candidate next time we are picking a captain he will get it, if not he won't. Either way he will be a leader. Love him and love Maxwell, the more leaders the better.

I wonder when Marty and Caolon arrive?

I remember Marty saying he would be coming down with Mooney in the next few weeks, I'm sure Cribbin will be joining them too, if he hasn't come back already.:D

Can anyone confirm when the club is venturing to flagstaff this year?
28th of November to the 9th of December.

If you have a spare $27,500 sitting around, you can go too.:cool:

(Got the dates of an email the club sent me a few weeks back, asking me to pay up and go to Arizona as part of the official group).

still nothing official on the 2 macs..or have we just taken it for granted that these 2 are goneski..off the list?? hmmmm btw have the anti-maxy4captain crew had a look back of how our team falls apart when he is missing...ffs get a grip ..Nick Maxwell is an amazing leader..why else would bucks have offered him his no.5 & went on to back him forthe captaincy after Burnsy..:thumbsu:

I'm glad they've pushed it back this year. It was a little early IMO last year (I believe they left in mid November) so this year the draftees at least have the chance to go over, if the club chooses, and it also gives the senior players more of a break before the heavy stuff.
