And no I'm not talking people wise.

I've been smoking for 7 years or so and have decided to give them up.

Anyone got any unique suggestions besides patches or 'willpower' on how to overcome this?

I'm petrified of failing this. I have patches but prefer not to use them...

If you're a smoker and know how I feel, HELP ME!

I remember ****. Yummy things they were, we used to think we were so cool as 8 year olds with them hanging out our mouths.

Damn political correctness.

WTF are Fads?

Well I just drove to my bf's and gave him my deck & threw out my lighters on impulse.

I have no idea how I'm supposed to be feeling now

(This has helped for me, but may not help others)

I haven't been able to give up smoking, BUT I have been able to cut smoking down from 30/day to 16/day by no longer EVER smoking inside.

If you find that you can't completely kick them just yet, I suggest inserting some functionality that simply makes it more difficult and/or more of a pain to smoke them. Get low strength smokes, they are probably no better for yer, but they don't taste as good, so thy're not as morish.

And try going outside. If it's at all possible for you, even place your smokes outside, so you have to go out to have one. But DO NOT subsequently line up a barfridge, PC and stack of reading material out in the same outdoor location. (defeats the purporse, you see).

Also, explain to any loved ones around that they are NOT to tell you off whenever you go to have one. This will only inflame your addiction's resentment to cutting down, and you'll end up smoking more out of darn spite.

Oh, and meter it, keep a record. On the PC, graph your usage if you want. It gives more information to your sensory perceptors that you are making progress. No good making progress if you don't realise it!

Remember, I have NOT been able to get off the smokes, I have only been able to cut down by about half. So the above may not help at all. But if its any use, go for it.

Thanks for the advice but I want to give up completely. I've tried cutting down but for me that just doesn't motivate me to quit. I had a sudden feeling today that I want to be healthy, save some money, get rid of this cough I have (I've developed chronic bronchitis as a result of smoking) and as well as other things. I haven't prepared myself, it was all done on impulse. I WANT to do this, and I'm proud of myself for actually quitting, but staying off them will be the hardest thing I've ever had to do :( :(

This is stage 2 I believe...?

Yeah but those old blokes who live in pubs every day. Sheesh!

No wonder they get so drunk, and learn to breathe through their nose.

Dels, I have tried three times to give up, to no avail. The only thing is don't do it if you feel like someone else is making you feel guilty for doing it. Maybe being sick and all the other crap is gonna help keep you going. Not really helpful I'm sorry.

But keep at it!

Katthawk, thanks, and no I'm not giving up because of other people. I've realised the benefits of quitting. I have more pros than cons about it.

I'm just scared I won't make it, I could go for one right now, but so far, I'm doing okay. I want to quit before the season starts, so I can only stick to biting my nails at the games :)

I agree with mobben.
Ive smoked on and off for 30 years.
Ive convinced myself Ill never give it away totally so I do things like
- Dont smoke inside
- Dont smoke at work ( Not allowed to anyway unless I go off site)
- Dont smoke in the showerjust kiddin
- Dont smoke around my children
- Dont smoke in the car ( the good one)

Hang tough - Cold Turkey it out

It was still the same last year............was most impressed with the Gabba never queued up for longer than 2 mins when the place was packed.........

The main thing is you want to quit............

When thinking about having one just try and think about something else - something else you enjoy..............it gets easier after the first couple of weeks.

Mind you I started again after 4 years off them last year but am giving up again after this weekend........too big a party on Sunday for me not to be tempted.........

Good luck with that. I think the most daunting thing is picking up another smoke, it's like you have to start at the beginning again.

If you do don't think of it as a failure - just another step in the quitting process.

Try not to think of it too much as that can be a killer and use anything you think of for help (ie mints, chewies etc).

Another thing that can help in times of temptation is to ensure your mates who smoke won't give you one if you ask..........makes you think about it if you have to go and buy a packet.

Also forgot to mention a very good incentive scheme.........put the money you spend on smokes each week into a jar so after 6/12 months you can actually go and buy something you want with the proceeds................it's a very good incentive.

I put away $30 a week for 6 months and had just under $800 to spend on myself which was a great incentive to stay off them and will be doing the same as of next week.

Everybody around me is telling me off for smoking - it gets on my nerves. I want to quit but I haven't really bothered. Just gone down from about 20 a day to about 10, going down from 12s to 8s. I have tried to quit a couple of times recently, best effort was 9 days... then a party....

But with everyone digging into me about it, it gets on my nerves.... and that means I need a smoke.

I never smoked cigarettes, and it's not really coz of the money or wotever, i just didn't. I mean i see all these anti-smoking ads with the cut up lung and brain, but they don't seem to have an effect on me in making me say: "Gee, i am glad i don't smoke".

On the other hand, i have smoked the green stuff!

I smoke both kinds.

Though I find when i smoke pot I hardly smoke ciggis. When I dont have pot I smoke double the ciggies I normally do.

I hate the habbit and after 13 years of puff'n I must say I am starting to feel complications like sore chest and headaches. My body seems to suffer more these days.

But Mobbenfuer is correct about smoking outside. It helps a lot in winter when the last thing you want to do is stand outside freezing your balls off puff'n away.

Plus it doesnt make your clothes and furniture smell like a pub.

Precisely. I thought my family didn't know I smoked, but then they started bringing up all this stuff about cancer and smoking. I knew that we all knew I did, and they didn't like it.

But the more they stepped around me, the more I did it to really annoy them. Now they know, I actually don't feel like smoking around them, and I don't feel like doing it out of spite.

Does this make me feel like quitting?. Not yet, but at least I don't try and smoke as much as I can because I want to die quickly just to spite them. I know, I know, it doesn't matter how many or how much, but at least I have less hassle and therefore don't need to say ' I need a smoke'.
