Player retention is a vastly under-rated component of list management at league clubs, according to Richmond’s General Manager of Football Dan Richardson.

It is something Richmond does particularly well, too, being ranked in the top three in the competition for retaining its playing talent.

“We all get a bit carried away with free agency and the trade period, but the truth is, keeping your best players is more important than that. And we’ve been able to do that this year,” Richardson said on ‘Talking Tigers’.

“Let’s face it, we even had a situation during trade period where a player in Dave Astbury was looking at his options . . . but he chose to stay at Tigerland because he loves it here.

I love it that we've been so good in this area of late. I'm happy to forego any doozy FAs and mega-trades as long as we're not losing anyone we need. We have a young and talented list and they're going to keep getting better over the next couple of years. Adding a couple of players each year to fill needs (like Townsend and Yarran), using our 1st round pick and making sure no required players leave, that will keep us in the mix for the flag for the next decade IMO.

Fluff piece to distract from the fact that we couldn't land anyone other than Yarran.
Yes our player retention has been very good, but we've lost three elimination finals in a row.

What do you want? Every article to say "but we're shit because we list another final"?

Or how about they sacrifice their first born sons?

When do we all get to move on with our lives without "you didn't win a final shitheads" being dragged up?

Not sure how an integral player in our squad basically committing the rest of his footy life to our club is a "fluff" piece exactly, but sure...

They are two separate issues, and quite frankly, I'd rather focus heavily on retaining the stars that we've built up and continue to see them in our colors, than be in a situation where you are bringing in some big names, but also losing them just as regularly. :thumbsu:

Finally, Yarran might not be an out and out A grade player just yet, but we know he's capable of becoming one, so who knows, in 2 or 3 years time we might be talking about how our 2015 trade period was an absolute winner!

Well, one article to say "we're shit because we lost another final" would be a start.

Yarran will be a great pick up. Have said it from day one.
I just don't care for 'articles' that are basically written for what I consider to be appeasment. It does nothing of the sort for me.
Anyhoo, carry on.

dont see it that way myself rapt we kept all our big stars and solid performers rather than grabbing the bennells, carlyles and treloars of this world who have prostituted themselves out with all their baggage, false promises and money grabbing pimps who tried to stooge us.

My prediction is that he won't re-sign early. I have an ominous feeling about him.
If Channel 9 announce a new show for 2017: 'Sunday morning boxing with Ty's dad' you'll already know.

Edwards extending is fantastic, and honestly I wouldn't have thought Ty would be the first we'd need to worry about.

Spot on. They couldn't put out the "happy to take our picks to the draft" line this year as it's paper thin now.

And remember the trade period before this one when we were the equal most inactive club in the league, how we were told that's ok because we were 'investing heavily in the draft'. Expect more excuses and deflecton next year if history repeats. There is nothing wrong with fluff, just like there is nothing wrong in calling it out for what it is.

No way in hell they'd afford him now

They forgot to fix their forward line this year.....doh
but but Midfield.......

Backline that is a bunch of kids, 28 year old hack who bent the club over for money and is still running scared from the Trossman, their best KPF is a 19 year old F/S kid

Yeah, let's see this headline...
Richmond retain the bunch of no talent hacks that lost three elimination finals in a row!!
We predict that there will be NO natural improvement from the young players on their list and the rest will go backwards.
Yarran and Townsend, Big ****ing Deal!

Perfect. You took the words right from my keyboard

Do you mean Troy Chaplin DFA Hunt and Shaun Hampson types.
I'd prefer a pimp like Treloar stooging me than the above vegetables

I'd read that article!
