I love it that we've been so good in this area of late. I'm happy to forego any doozy FAs and mega-trades as long as we're not losing anyone we need. We have a young and talented list and they're going to keep getting better over the next couple of years. Adding a couple of players each year to fill needs (like Townsend and Yarran), using our 1st round pick and making sure no required players leave, that will keep us in the mix for the flag for the next decade IMO.
Player retention is a vastly under-rated component of list management at league clubs, according to Richmond’s General Manager of Football Dan Richardson.
It is something Richmond does particularly well, too, being ranked in the top three in the competition for retaining its playing talent.
“We all get a bit carried away with free agency and the trade period, but the truth is, keeping your best players is more important than that. And we’ve been able to do that this year,” Richardson said on ‘Talking Tigers’.
“Let’s face it, we even had a situation during trade period where a player in Dave Astbury was looking at his options . . . but he chose to stay at Tigerland because he loves it here.
