Whichever way, I'm confident we all want the best for the people we know and even the people we don't know.
To wish otherwise wouldn't be civilized.

Sorry if anything I say may upset people but I for one, am happy that people can push hard through a debate.
There's no individual win in doing so but it's always interesting to cover as much ground from all perspectives....even the ones we don't like.

I gave you an example, I gave you an explanation, and I believe that you may be being deliberately obtuse when you tell me I'm cherry picking or that you don't understand me. Let's call it an agree to disagree situation because clearly we don't see eye to eye.

The world is full of cautionary tales. Terrorist alerts, cyclone warnings, travel warnings, communicable disease warnings etc. People still live but they do so armed with a little more information so they can best avoid things that may place them at risk. Not sure that is living in fear.

When I was a teenager, I used to roam the streets with a mate or two. Got chased by gangs with baseballs bats or some other weaponry. Was alone in a dark sunken car park at a shopping centre when accosted by two arseholes who pulled up in a car and was saved by a passer by. Used to hang out in storm water drains. I look back now and just think how stupid I was, not that I was had a blast and came out unscathed. I just didn't recognise the danger.

God, this made me reflect on my teens and early 20s.

Could have been dead 100 times.

Not looking forward to parenthood.

Victim blaming. Thats an expression. It has massive emotional connotations to the person being accused of it. It is used to pigeon hole a persons views, when surely peoples views are far more complex.....
I see why harker is getting defensive. I also think you are putting his views into a corner that suits your argument rather than a true reflection of what he is saying

I'm not getting defensive though but when one situation gets flagged as being representative of all........well, it somehow doesn't fit.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking this thread and these discussions are better served on suitable boards and in suitable threads, to which this is neither.
