I really doubt that we would have played Mayne if he wasn't fit. I saw the videos on him hopping around on his ankle to test it out. He's just out of form.

Think we are talking about the back injury that hurt his finals, pre- season and possibly still now.

That'd be good news.

Mightn't be his ankle. Might be his tank. No idea. But if he's physically OK to play, then he has to play. Alternatives for our forward line are thin on the ground at the moment.

His forward pressure has seemed a little off this year too, lack of goals aside. There were a few times on the weekend where the old Mayne would have just bolted and crunched the player but instead he sort of feebly jogged and was easily run past, really wouldn't be surprised if he's still suffering from the back complaint.

Prior said on the weekend (on the wireless, no less) that Apeness would be pushing for a spot sometime this year, which surprised me. Doubt it will be this week though.

With Walters, Ballantyne, Gumbleton, Kepler, Duffy, Sylvia and Simpson all unavailable, he might very well get a call up.

Start of last year. I had an argument with Muffin a while ago and had to check my facts. Remembered it from that.

I had the same argument with a mate. he said he missed some early games cos of that pre season injury but I clearly remember him being dropped then coming back to be the lord of intercept marking.

Yeah, he was dropped back to the wafl to work on something.

My theory was that it was attack and application when the ball hit the deck. He was always brave as an intercept marker but seemed to cruise when the ball was on the floor in dispute, or being run away from him.

No idea what he was dropped for in reality.

I want to see how Taberner responds this week coming off a poor showing against Sydney (he wasn't alone) so I hope they persevere another week. Back to the original post though, alot to be excited about with Apeness.

We have nobody we can bring in to replace him, by my reckoning.

There is Hannath.
That's one of the problems with having all our reserves play for one team. I thought Hannah was very good against EF last week and with Griff and Keplar coming back maybe we should be developing Hannath at FF instead of playing him as a second ruck. The problem is that we would probably have to push Moller down to the ressies and also compromise the development of Apeness at FF. At this point in time though I think I would go with Hannath.

Completely agree with your Hannath call. He's never going to be in the side as a ruckman so long as Sandi, Clarke and Griffin are all fit but there is a chance he could grab FF with Gumby injured and Tabs and Apeman still being pretty raw. For mine it's his best bet of making it.

I'm not giving away my preferences here either btw, just being somewhat realistic.

I'm not a big fan of Hannath but after watching him on Friday maybe we've played him out of position. Anyone who watched the game would have been impressed with him when he won the ball in the middle of the ground and banged in a goal on the run from 65m out. Not bad for a 200cm 100kg player. I thought you had to be Fijian to do that sort of thing.

I would have thought too lean at this stage. Unless he's fast, and I hadn't noticed that watching a couple of his games for Peel.

I'd be more inclined to bring back Hannath for Taberner. Tabs is the better long term prospect, but Hannath is more capable of being effective at the moment.
