“This is a game we would normally lose”

Seriously, I can accept it from the uneducated media and other club supporters, but not from us here. I hear it week after week after week whenever we play one of the TWELVE teams below us. You just can't say that about the current team. Lets all make a pact to bin it. Yes, there will be upsets in future, but they are now games "we normally win".

“Our biggest enemy this week is complacency”

Our team and those around it plan to win every game and work bloody hard in between games to try and carry it out. If the team is not at its best it is not because of complacency. It just happens. Complacency might exist amongst us when we are putting in our footy tipping but I can guarantee that the team hasn't decided to spend most of the week drinking skinny caps if they are playing a bottom of the ladder team. Lets give THIS current team a bit of credit.

"If we play like this next week we will lose or be smashed"

Ah, hello?...I always thought to win when you are not playing well is actually a positive. I also hear this time and time again about quarters or halves where the other team has a bit of a run on but we end up winning anyway. It seems some will not be satisfied unless we dominate for every minute of every quarter of every match. Lets be realistic.

Can see what you are trying to say but you need to understand the context of those saying it.
Games we normally lose means - in every so-called resurgence over the last 30 years, we would get a bit of steam up and then lose a game like some of those over this season. This team is different but unlike the players in the club now, the supporters are probably acutely aware of those failures in the past

Completely agree with you re complacency.... just doesn't exist for the most part from players in the AFL these days. You can play well, mediocre or poorly but it's not generally through thinking the opposition is going to roll over...

We played against Essendon in much the same manner we played against Melb.... chip sideways and backwards, no daring, taking the game on and the result against a better team - 11 goal turnaround from the week before. However you are spot on about being unable to dominate games for 120 mins.... just doesn't happen

i like your enthusiasm, but "normally" implies doing it consistently for far longer than half a season of footy. we had really good years in 1995 and 2001, after long periods in the wilderness, and similar thoughts and hopes lived on.....to no avail. i'm not saying that will happen again here, but you have to understand people's inability to jump on board so quickly and be able to change their mindset after decades of heartache. it's all about self-protection TM2 for those of us that have been burnt so often.

i hope you are young and don't remember the decades of suffering because the club, and us older supporters in particular, need the exuberance of youth to embrace and help drive the positive cultural changes that are taking place. i like the essence of your post. :thumbsu:

I honestly still get nervous about losing easy games because we have so much in the past. Even at quarter time yesterday i had a bad feeling we were going to lose which is stupid.
But i'm starting to believe that is the old richmond, time to look forward and not in the past lads!

I don't put my party hat on until 5 minutes to go and we are at least 50 points ahead.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

At least I haven't been reaching for a xanax and a whiskey chaser for a while now but 4 games can not undo years of psychological scarring.

As far as complacency goes.. Well I haven't been worried about that so much this year. Having depth will tend to make players turn up to play. Ask McGuane about that one

I hear what you are saying mate, but you are asking supporters to drop decades of negative emotion in half a season..

No of course not, but lets give it a rest when we are posting in the preview threads about upcoming games. This team doesn't have any history of continually losing games they should have won. Yeah the Gold Coast may have been one but I can't remember too many others. Our results have reflected pretty accurately where we were/are at.

Asking too much of us lol. Every time we have been on a roll like this in the past we have found a way to screw it all up and crumble. Half a season isn't going to change that for me. I have more faith this time no doubt, however like others have said I still get that little voice in my head every week saying settle down, the capitulation is coming :p

Haha so true :D

I usually apply the "more goals than minutes" adage

I'll start believing we won't drop games we should win once we beat Gold Coast.

Thing is, every club bar probably the top 2-3 drop games they shouldn't throughout the year. The key thing is how many games you define as "should win" and how many are 50-50 or worse. We have a lot more "should win" games this year than we have in the past, which is a sign that we've improved. Losing one upset game isn't the end of the world or a sign that we are still the old Richmond. Losing regularly in "should win" games would be concerning.

I like being a half glass empty tiger thanks!! It's a safety blanket and saves me from a lot of pain.
Seriously though all those years it has taken for me to mould me into this has robbed me of the experience of enjoying wins and I am just a calm man sitting there watching when we play like this feeling far more relieved than euphoric or excited.
When I don't go to games and watch in the front room my Missus knows we are winning when it's quiet. There is no cheering or whoopin and a hollerin... Just nothing.
But when we are losing I nearly blow a fuse and it gets very very blue in that front room.
At games I just feel my core temperature rise to absurd levels when losing.
Yet I just sit and smile with an attitude of "phew" rather than be happy if we win.
I'm not a well man.

as a very long time supporter im likeing what I see we will drop a few that the nature of the game but continue on our current path and I can see a cup sooner rather than later will make my 6th when it happens

No, Im sorry, this team (or 90% of it) has a big record of loosing games it should have won.. see 8 losses last year less than 12pts... see Gold Coast, see Round 1 where we very nearly threw it away.... I understand your view point but it will take a hell of a lot more than 4 wins against bottom 8 sides to let me put down either my cycnism, or fear or desire for mental health. RFC is clearly on the road to rehabilitation but it owes us a hell of a lot more than what 4 wins can unwind. Youre asking too much ,too soon.... Im talking 2 seasons and consecutive finals appearances too soon. The Tigers have my loyalty until the day I die, but they have not yet regained my unquestioning trust.

I like the message here ... i have suffered with everyone here ... we need to be positive to really enjoy the wins we are having ... we need to believe that we will keep winning .. otherwise even when we win we will be thinking it cant last and not savoring it as we should.

The message is from an enthusiastic supporter and many of the responses are reasonable but go against the message he is trying to instill ... our club our coaches our players do not worry about the past and we have to hope and believe in them and that we will win every week ... and when we dont not mope around and say its happened again . ..Geelong and Collingwood supporters dont think like that ... they think damn it its a hiccup next week we will kick ass.

I will do my best to be positive ... i am feeling more positive now than in years .. and whatever wins or successes we have this year i will savor them and be eager for more.
