And yet he still earns far more than your good self every year.

For some people it is not about becoming the best in the world, it is about earning a crust. I agree that most of his game sucks, but his serve can earn him a nice living.

Chris would be the first to admit to his limitations but for a bloke so young there is still a lot more money to be earned playing on the pro circuit rather than taking a day job back home.

Retirement would be foolhardy IMO, at least until his serve goes belly up.

Mate c'mon, people say all sorts of things, you think people actually mean it and people are actually going to listen. ;

Yeah, i know, just always found it a useless thing to say, like how people say Lleyton should retire because he can't beat federer, it puzzles me.

He is probably the most laziest tennis character i've watched, he is very mellow. He always has that serve though and if he can use that more to his advantage and improves other things then he can get somewhere. His game allows for upsets like he has had, ferrero, tsonga, berdych. He'll probably never do it though.

yeah he will never make anything of himself. he has got his serve and that is it. he needs a good volley and he has never had one

and i couldnt give a stuff if he makes it or not, his old man is a **** as well. vsed him in thursday night tennis comp. absolute arseh*le

He may earn a fair bit more than your average Joe in prize money - but his expenses would be through the roof - airfares, hotel rooms, coaching..... the list goes on.

I know of a few players that have been on the cusp of the top 100 who have had to call it quits - purely because they weren't making enough money to cover all of the costs.

Gooch is fortunate that Australia's tennis stocks are insanely low at the moment - so he can almost guarantee himself a wildcard at the Oz Open each year. He makes half of his earnings here each year.

He would still be earning a 6-figure sum each year. Don't forget endorsements. Where else is he going to get that kind of money. Plus he's not that old he still has a chance to get better.

I don't really rate the guy but asking him to retire is pretty stupid. Firstly he would be making plenty of coin and he's just your typical top 150 journeyman type player.
