As my username indicates , the first season I followed was 1978.
Magical time as a kid getting to know my own club of choice and each player. All the players were new to me whether 33 or 18. How you followed your team then if you could not get to games was to listen to the coverage of game on radio at 2 pm EVERY SATURDAY as a routine and if your team was lucky enough to be one of the 2 to 3 games covered by channel 7 or the ABC you would watch the Saturday night replay. You might only see 30 minutes of your actual team, IF they were on tv. We started off worse than this season. So a lot of getting to know your players was via hearing their name called on radio and the image in your mind the commentators painted. I do not remember having a specific favourite at first but certainly there were some players names that excited me more. Trevor Keogh and Rod Ashman probably guys I got to know well first as they were rovers and playing midfield or resting forward pockets as goal sneaks. but probably did not take long to be mesmerised by Alex Jesaulenko. His name alone excites as such a exotic name to hear as a kid, plus the commentators seem to love calling his name. He was soon captain-coach by half way through the season and as a kid it seemed a truly magical rise from bottom to make finals by end of home and away season. To hear him talk on World of Sport Club Corner every Sunday was must watching. He had such an aura and charisma about him, he was probably my first boyhood hero. Every word I hanged on and because he turned us around so quick he really did seem to have the midas touch and a bit like a Messiah. 1979, we won the premiership with him captain-coach. But I also still had a soft spot for all the little mosquito fleet guys that caused excitement for us as fans at the time but chaos for opposition. Kenny Sheldon kicked over 50 goals that season so he was probably my favourite in 1979 season. 1980 I was devastated to learn Jezza quit with the political infighting at Carlton, that still four decades on is part of the fabric of how this club runs through it's vast array of followers from all parts of society. As Stig, hinted 1980 was a season of mourning. I was still probably getting to know more players and Wayne Johnston started to join my other favourites from earlier two seasons of Ashman, Keough and Sheldon. After we sacked Percy as coach at end of 1980 we got Parkin as coach.

1981 I probably still did not have one absolute favourite. I just loved nearly every player still very much as a kid. I think I attended my first game this season.
1982 I started to actually go to games most weeks. We had the most exciting team to follow and watch. I think the Dominator in the premiership quarters was starting to dominate my attention. To watch him play live from week to week was something else.
Probably from 1982 to his retirement he was my favourite player.

When he retired had to find another favourite.
1991 to his retirement that player became Stephen Silvagni. It did not matter whether it was full forward kicking a bag of 6 to 10 goals or his normal role on best key defender on opposition. He was just an absolute champion and had total trust in how he competed against other greats like Lockett, Carey, Ablett and Dunstall.

Was a sad day when he retired and ended a long period where only two players could fill my role as my favourite. Dominator and SOS had the longest reign as my favourites. I do not believe I have had one clear favourite since. Eddie Betts, Waite, Simmo and Fisher probably all my favourites at various points in our darkest years but no one player has been able to fill the void Dominator and SOS left.

Sadly the void of our next premiership has also not been filled. Right now in this dark season, I probably get joy mostly to see guys like SPS, Jack, Cuningham and Stocker do well. I crave to see our young players take our club to our next premiership. It hurts me to see Docherty, Pickett and Williamson on the injured list. I so want these guys to experience the same thrill guys like Dominator and Sheldon experienced the magical years of following us as a kid. Rise up young fellas. Our club is in your hands on field. All become my favourites.

My dad took me to the same game as an 8yo. So fortunate that my father, a migrant with little english moved to Carlton cos (would you believe) it was the only place he could afford to buy in the 60’s....and how fortunate was he that a wonderful neighbour saw past the limited English and insisted he join him at the 70 grand final. My kids zero grand finals at this stage but we are all hanging on confident for 23.

Doull....................jezza....thehurricane....dominator...Bradley....diesel

Showing my GenZ here but I remember at one of my first Blues games someone asked me who my favourite player was and said Lance Whitnall with a few looks of disdain.

I also loved Matty Lappin, Eddie, Fev growing up. And for about one game this year when he kicked that bomb to close the gap in the third against Richmond in R1 it was Nic Newman.

It was huge the day that the 3 SA boys came over. We got the great man Sticks, Naley was all class and Peter Motley (Motts) could have been anything. We had ‘the Rat’ in the brown paper bag days too, but that fell through.

Two other players I followed strongly also, was Ross Ditchburn and a skinny bush superstar named Stephen Oliver. Big forwards were always a favourite of mine though. Add McKay, Walls, Dorra, Sartori, Ralph, Big Red, the Duke, and Fev to name a few.
