I was in the Anglers Tavern on Sunday night and noticed a small group of Bulldog players there having a couple of beers. They weren't misbehaving or drinking lots but I was wondering if to go the whole way to a flag in the AFL the players need to be totally committed to the game or is the occaisional drink (which this probably was ) acceptable.

I thought this was a thread about Dave Matthews :(

I think the occasional one is fine, i mean, who doesn't enjoy the odd drop of alcomahol every now and again?

They bust their collective butts during the season, before the season, etc, so i can't see the harm :)

OK MrW, we will need names :)

I don't think they should be drinking at all during the season but believe it is OK to have a couple during the pre-season.
To many promising career's have been wrecked by the drinks

I've never understood the mentality of "they're professional sportsmen, they can't drink"

I agree - you shouldn't get ****ed pre game (ie the night before) but a quiet one after the game or during the week, who cares? IF you're going to become an alocholic, you'll become one regardless if your a professional sport person or not.

The best athletes in the world tend to shy away from it until the off season so I would think that if you want to get an edge on your teammates, to secure a senior spot, and the opposition it is not a huge sacrifice over your football lifetime. If players can defer things like their holidays and weddings etc to the off season then putting the drinks off limits during the season should be no problems for them

You could say the same about caffine based beverages and the effects that they have on your metabolic state. In all honesty there's a huge list of things that could effect your performance in adverse ways.

Not saying it's right or wrong, (well, i am saying i can't see a problem) however, can also understand your point.

Just want to mention, I am a fan of jumping Jai and his fitness and health regime though :)

Exactly. Woewodin went on a special diet, it was so strict he had to eat at specific times and very specific amounts. this was the year after his brownlow win...he played crap.

The mental positives of being able to relax over a few quiet ones far out weigh any negatives a few beers could have in their bodies.

Drinking is the only thing we have been better at then any other team over the years, it would be a shame if we lost that. What would the clubs forefathers like McPherson, Groenoewagon and Sir Douglas think, all their hard work would be going to waste. By golly sinking a bit, or a lot of **** is what this club is about, and something that should be fought to the death to maintain, its as Bulldog as Teddy Whitten, Big Dave and Irene Chatfield

I feel a Doggies/Saints debate about this starting, ala Dons/Blues fans about who is most successfull.

Lol, they probably do have us pipped in the drinking department, but they are the only side where we have been legitimately better on field. I wonder if theres a link between the two best clubs at getting hammered also being the 2 least succesful :(

Since I'm knocking back a nice young Hunter shiraz while reading this thread, I'll have to go for light drinking is OK, otherwise my next glass will be spoilt by a bout of serious personal hypocrisy. ;)

On the other hand, a friend once played semi-serious rugby when stoned, and another acquaintance once opened the batting for the legendary Canberra social cricket team "The Elastic Band" while tripping. I can't really condone either action, and neither would they today as both were pretty freaked out. Mind you, Shane Warne or other Sainters.....
