Meh, there was dozens of fans near I was laying into Saddington ...
He shouldn't take it personally, I'm sure he's a nice bloke off the field, but gee whiz, it makes one really frustrated when Saddington (IMHO) showed very little committment to the cause, and his lack of chasing and tackling pressure for a defender was very annoying ..

And FWIW the carlton fans jeering Saddington are no worse then the Bomber fans who ripped into Laycock on the w/end ...
Every club has 'passionate' supporters, and I'm sure Kooley loves the club, and I have to admit though sunday's game left me devestated and gutted, and i can understand why fans would want to vent at players like Saddington.
The fact he plays for Carlton doesn't disregard the fact he's a dud ...

I wouldn't take booing and bronx cheers by people wearing the same jumper personally. Maybe humiliation would be more on the money.

Being put on the tallest player on the ground when the Roos players kept kicking it to him wouldn't have been easy either. As I've said before I'm not saying he's fabulous and an AA player but it's getting old now. Bagging him for the loss when no one showed up is really lame.

Sorry CP, but comparing us to Essendon supporters just proves the point. If that's what they do to their own I doubt acting like them is what Carlton supporters should be doing.

As for Kooley, he can fight his own battle.

They are laying into him, jeering him and he shouldn`t take it personally? Are you serious? Surely you are taking the piss.

What should he do - treat it as generic, non-specific criticism coming from an objective viewpoint?

Let`s re-word that shall we?

The Carlton fans jeering Saddington were no better than the Essendon supporters who ripped into Laycock at the weekend.

There, that`s much better. :)

Well strictly speaking, Saddington is a professional sports player, and frankly he really shouldn't care or give a shit what the fans think (after all he's playing footy at the highest level, and us fans aren't ...)

Ulitmately even star players have been jeered/paid out by their own fans over the years (IE Richo from Richmond) and whilst it's an ugly blight on the game, there really isn't much anyone can do about it ..

I just think it's part of human nature, that people and sports fans have a tendency to become very inconsiderate and 'venting/abusing' their own players after a bad loss happens in just about every sport and code around the world ...

You just have to accept/and deal with the fact that footy/sports fans have a trait to 'turn on their own' when the going gets tough ...

Personally I regret what happened to Saddington, but that comes with the territory of being an pro-sports athlete ... (not saying it's right either)

This is the whole point. Richmond supporters booing Richo is disgusting, Essendon supporters booing Laycock is disgusting. Carlton supporters booing Saddo is disgusting. It's McKernan all over again, hopefully it won't get that bad, that was just humiliating for everyone.

I know what you're saying CP, but I couldn't imagine getting over it. Being clapped and booed off the ground surrounded by 44,000 must be pretty soul destroying.

That's the whole point of sports I think, it does bring out the best and worst of people ... You can point to those unsavoury incidents, and I think the way Danny Frawley was treated as coach of Richmond was disgraceful (being spat on, and his wife and kids verbally abused in his last game as coach) but also sports do provide wonderful moments ...
I will never ever forget the 'Troy Broadbridge' memorial game between Essendon and Melbourne, after tragically Troy Broadbridge lost his life at that horrific Tsuanami in Phuket, and died a hero, saving his wife Trish's life ..
But the whole MCG, Dees and Bombers fans united, and Trish tossed the coin, and the Bombers FC and their fans did a wonderful job in their tribute for the tragic hero that was Broadbridge ... I shed tears watching that, watching how brave Trish was that night, and how everyone, no matter if there were an umpire, Bomber or a demon, just stood up, and remembered a young man whose life was robbed on the most happiest days/moments of his life ...

I prefer generally to think sports fans in that light, rather then the ferals who abuse/turn on their own supporters ...

You're so right CP, unfortunately the ugly bits stick in the memory as well.
That game was amazing, put things into perspective put a HUMAN side to it, people seem to forget that :thumbsu:

That to me raises an interesting point.

The fact that players are professional and paid well does not turn them into emotionless automatons who take everything in their stride and don`t get hurt or upset. It also does not make them perfect.

In Saddington`s case for instance, here he was doing what I am sure he thought was his best for the side, whilst at the same time playing for his AFL career. I have no doubt he would have been hurt/upset/unsettled to some degree by the jeers (especially given they were coming from supporters of his own club) and the fact that he is a paid athlete would not have made one ounce of difference to that reaction.

Now, of course they should always be up for scrutiny and criticism where warranted, but they definitely don`t deserve abuse/denigration/vilification, etc (whether it be in person or in the virtual world) simply because they are professionals.

It's all human nature though sadly ... I mean I've seen people go totally off their rocker at Taxi/bad drivers on the road .. However the best athletes are the ones with the most 'thick' skins IE How much crap do you think Wayne Carey copped over his career, esp after the Kellie Stevens, I can't recall how he'd manage to play so well in that game against the Kangaroos, with all the jeers/booing from his former supporters who loved him, and playing again his former mates (admittedly I'm not comparing Saddington as a human being to Carey) ..
I do think though it is very bad what happened to Saddington last Sunday, but also a lot of these supporters are very passionate, love the club deeply, and sadly in life there is always scapegoats ...
I do read as well that apparently some players can totally tune out what the fans say/yell out to them from the outer .

sadly in life there is always scapegoats ..

Jason Sadington came to Carlton when we were on the floor. He was badly used by the Swans who did not disclose to him or Carlton the true nature of the injury at the time that has kept him out of football for the last year or so when he might have been able to give of his best.
He certainly gave his best in the Bullants, and helped a few younger kids on their way.
He is a thoroughly decent bloke who does not deserve the crap that is being heaped on him right now. He was under the pump all day on Sunday, badly used by the Carlton box, and left to wear the anger of some dopey individuals who call themselves Blues fans. He should not have been on David Hale, ( although Carlos would have been worse!!) and the Umpires did nothing for him, on at least three occasions when Hale transgressed.
I hope he gets to play the last two games this season, and if he gets to go 'round for one more year, I for one wouldn't mind. He's value when he's fit, and always was. We could look at blokes like Houlihan, Russell and Fisher who have been persisted with week after week and still get a game. When we had no one they could get away with third class effort and skid through. Now the pressure is on and blokes like Murphy, Gibbs etc have lifted the standard, the less talented ones are getting found out.
Please leave Jason Saddington alone.

Case in point: Fev.

The way he so is focussed on his game that he never even notices the taunts jeers of the opposition cheer squad should be an example to all young footy players ;)

Lost me there.

Hey, it was obvious that Laidley would always try to manufacture a matchup between a tall and Saddington - as I said in the "No Change" thread. That's not Saddo's fault - it's the MC's for selecting him. That said, I hope he plays VFL for the last two games and Bower comes in ASAP. Saddington wasn't the reason we lost, but he's not up to the task.

But if you've played over 150 games, you're better than anyone who posts here.

Be good for all concerned if we could rid the board of the lot of them. Honestly. :thumbsd:

I agree with you there Alec. It's all academic now anyway, he's gone. I feel though that Saddo has been somewhat vindicated by Hales performance against Geelong, he made the Roos score look respectable, and it took 3/4's for Geelong to find a match up that would keep him quiet. To put Saddo on him when he has only played a couple of games in the blue jumper this year was a big task-and if, as you say, Laidley's game plan was that obvious....was he set up to fail, or was it a case of "us" not doing our homework on just who is who in the Roos line up? Duzzen madder, it's history.

Just wondering if the dheads that were booing him/calling him shit etc etc etc noticed that Hale made mincemeat of Geelong's defence in a losing effort where they had 3 on him at times, at other times 2 of them or sometimes just Scarlett, Harley or Taylor. They must be effin hopeless hacks to let him kick 8! Oh wait - they are the 20and1 reigning premier & flag favourite.
Good on you Saddo!

Saddington was hopeless against Port the week before as well. Fancy being out muscled by Justin Westhoff.

By your reckoning Saddington would be right at home in Geelong's defence :D

Harry Taylor >>>>>>>>>>> Saddington ... I mean Taylor's a kid in his first season, which is amazing considering he's cracked into the strongest team we've seen in yonks ..
