Tom Lee

Start Lee at CHB for the first few games and let him learn from the AFL level forwards about double leads, leading to create space etc. Then send him to the VFL to replicate that until he earns a spot.

Also: Any ideas on what number he should get?

Lee's WAFL Career stats:

Matches: 46
Kicks: 410 (ave 8.9)
Handballs: 185 (AVE 4.0)
Marks: 239 (AVE 5.2)
Disposals: 595 (AVE 12.9)
Tackles: 50 (AVE 1.1)
Goals: 82

Those are pretty good statistics considering he played as a defender for the majority of his WAFL Career. 60 goals in 16 games I think this season as a forward, great return.

Do you consider it a decent trade, what we gave for Lee. Pick 12 potentially would've got us a decent player.

Picks 24 and 43 could get us decent players.
Yeah this is what I was going to say. We got two more picks in addition to a player, and lets not forget Newnes and Markworth were in the 40's, Siposs pick 75. Who knows what those picks could get us.

Kevin Sheahan had him at Pick 11. Judging from WAFL he is worth it. Rated one of the best mature aged recruits in the draft.

Yeah that surprised me. Not often do you see mature age recruits, especially ones that have been delisted that high in a Phantom Draft. I guess Kevin Sheehan would know more than the Bigfooty Phantom Draft guys who have Lee around the 2nd and 3rd round. One must consider though, would Lee have been available at pick 34?

My thoughts are that either 1. The club had already made a deal to get Hickey for pick 24, effectively making it Lee, Hickey and whoever with pick 43 for pick 12; or 2. The club identified that picking a player in the draft at pick 24 is not a lot of difference to picking a player with pick 12 given the evenness of the best 25 players in the draft.

I guess time will tell and we will look back on this trade as a win or loss. I hope it's the former.

Captain Hindsight will tell us whether the trade was a good one. 24 and 43 could be elite players, multiple time all australians and Lee could be a match-winning forward, or Lee could be a spud and 24 and 43 are de-listed after a few years. Too early to tell at this point in time.

TOM LEE (St Kilda)

Lee is a mature-aged pick from Western Australia, where he won a premiership with Claremont, booting 60 goals for the season. He's a strong marking, 195cm forward and at 94kg has the body to slot straight into St Kilda's set-up. With Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke both turning 30 before the start of next season, the Saints see Lee as a possible replacement for their star forwards. The mobile big man spent a year on Adelaide's list in 2009, but was delisted without playing a game. Now 21, he is a ready-made player who will be asked to bolster St Kilda's attack early next season.

How good is the goal at the 50 second mark of that video!?! (Where he scoops the fast-moving ball up off the ground in his right hand, while running and then snaps it across his body with the left foot, a split second later, from a tight angle!) It's about as good a goal as you'll ever see and the sort of thing only the likes of Cyril Rioli usually do. Amazing!

Shifter and co would have spoken to those who are doing the recruiting for the clubs I reckon and they would have given him an indication of how high they rated him and where he was likely to go in the draft.

You've also got to realise that we wouldn't have to have given up pick 12 for him if no-one else was after him, either. I'd say there would have been a few clubs "bidding" for him and that is why it took so much to get him. The club seems extremely happy with the deal, so with that being the case, you know how highly we rate him. I think we consider pick 24 and 43 to just be a bonus.

Three picks for one tells us that we are intending to cut or trade more players. Otherwise why load up on draft picks. Also it means that we get three chances to get the pick right, there is a lot of late picks that have become excllent players.

Finally going more a more mature player in Lee, instead of an 18 year old is a sign that the coaching staff believe that we still have a chance in the near future.

I have become much more comfitable with this trade as the week has gone on.

He is a very good player in patches, can look extremely athletic with good hands. His knocks are his consistency and heard from some Claremont people he is perhaps a little soft both mentally and physically which is what scared off WC and Freo who both looked at him strongly last year.

I would have liked WC to get him last year for a rookie pick, not sure that much has changed this year but he has just proven himself that much more. I think he will be a solid player for you but not a genuine KPP - little bit like Brent Staker actually (KPP height and size but not mentality but still very talented).

Thanks for that. Very good contribution to forum.

Lee was told of the Crows' decision in October, the day before he was scheduled to fly back to Perth for his off-season break.

He had about 10 hours to pack his things and prepare for what had suddenly become a one-way trip.

He'd known he hadn't progressed as much as he - or the club - had hoped.

But, it was still a tough pill to swallow.

"I got told pretty early on that it was going to be a three-four year development process, and that probably wasn't the best thing for a 17-year-old to hear," he said.

"I was sitting there thinking, I can take it easy for a couple of years.

"Now I see that I didn't put enough work in while I was there, given that opportunity, and I'm just happy to get another opportunity to rectify that for myself and give myself the best shot at playing AFL football."

"Even now, coming into a professional environment is a shock to the system but I'm handling it better this time and hopefully I'll handle it better for the rest of the year."

Why does Hamill call him "Pammy", I don't get it?
