Just read that, after recently re-signing Paul Chapman, Geelong only have Brent Prismall and Tom Lonergan uncontracted beyond the end of this season.

We'd be a stronger side with the addition of either of them, but Lonergan especially would be a huge addition to our forward line as a tall, marking, goal-kicking forward.

Thoughts ?

I am not convinced about Tom Lonergan just yet...I think there are several players in top sides that tend to look a million times better then what they are, especailly forwards in forward lines that are getting shit hot supply. I think Nathan Ablett is a perfect example of this.

he would be a great addition..i didnt realise until just then that this bloke is 197cm and 97kg..

and i dont think they really need him..they have mooney whos already cemented himself and hawkins who they would really like to develop alot quicker as their talls and key position players..and then they've got johnson, chapman, stokes, kelly, wojcinski, varcoe and gamble..as well as a few developing players around the 194cm+ range such as simpson(196,92) and mckenna (195,85)..

although losing nathan ablett might make them reconsider not having signed him..

Careful guys, we are the only team board that is not allowed to talk about getting players from other clubs, as we are surely taking an quick fix instead of developing our own players or rorting the cap to nab them in the first place.

Dont forget the Tommahawk!

Down the track these two will probably both be vying for the same spot in the side, one will invariably miss out on many big finals in the future and if constitutes a reason why we can snare one of them then :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

lol carscum always trying to buy a premmership!!!111 y dont u tank for jud again!11!! lolz

Another quick/creative small forward would be bloody great. I like the look of recent forward 6 ideas people are putting out there with Walker and hoops in it, but a Varcoe or similar would be great with Eddie. Would make it well worth just plonking Cloke there and trying to create crumbs.

Geelong do have a good problem in that we have an abundance of KP forwards on the list. IMO Lonergan (as much as i love the bloke for his courage and good skills) is restricting Hawkins' development and i think Hawkins will be the player we go with long term.

This was more of an issue before Nathan Ablett announced his retirment as we had Mooney, Ablett, Hawkins, Lonergan and Gamble all capable of filling two positions in the 22... but we will still face problems as soon as next year regarding who to play.

It will be a problem not dissimilar to the current Brent Prismall dilema; good enough to get a game at most clubs, but too many of his type on the Geelong list to guarantee selection.

Unfortunately the only way Hawkins and Lonnergan will both remane at Geelong is if Mooney retires in the next couple of years, or is given a lesser role allowing the two Tom's to take over the KP forward positions. Otherwise one of them will have to put up with playing VFL for the next couple of years, much like Prismall has done over the last year or so. The only other solution is if Bomber decides to play all three; Moons, Loners and Hawkins (and Gamble at 190cm) at the smae time which i think is very unlikely.

I reckon the smartest thing Geelong can do is trade these "good enough to get a game in other teams" players while they're young, their form looks great and their value is highest, for decent draft picks. Keep re-stocking the cupboard, find the Selwoods and keep them, sell the others, rinse repeat. Geelong are in the fantastically strong position, and the only way they can stuff it up is by holding on to the oldies too long and losing the next generation.

I agree in theory, but we're talking about people here, loyal servants of the club, which makes it very difficult to delist and trade players at will to keep the team fresh, so to speak.

Sure he'd be useful but what would we have to give for him?

Wouldnt be too much...2nd or 3rd round pick. Remember Geelong let King go for nothing last year, they may do something similar this year. Their salary cap must be at bursting point.

There'll be a bit more interest in Lonners than there was in King though (age) - swapping a 2nd rounder for him would be a steal IMO.

What Geelong have going for them at the moment is a culture that everyone wants to be a part of. Players dont want to leave because they've got it too good, most of them can pop out for a beer on the weekend and not be harrassed. And most of them live in Torquay or on the beach.

It is the ultimate lifestyle and they are all great mates, the best part is that these blokes dont take it for granted and appreciate what they have. An extra bit of coin isn't changing the way they think.

I would highly doubt that Tom would leave Geelong after the support they have given him after losing his kidney.

Don't know if i agree with that Jez - our 2nd rounder this year could pick us up a younger, better version like Trengove. Not sold on Lonners to be honest.

Yeah I think you would probably end up overpaying for Lonners, not because I don't rate him, but because it would take an offer which is far too good to pass up to pry him from the club. Emotional ties are a huge factor.

Bomber was cut up about trading Brent Moloney, and he was just a robot with a leg!

Agreed. I think Lonergan is loved down at the club and vice versa. I don't think he would be going anywhere just yet, especially with NAblett retiring! I do believe there is every chance Prismall may want out though given his run he is having, as I don't think when all 4 outs are back in that he will be in the 22. You can also have Byrnes and Tenace as well if you like?

Fair enough. Lonergan is more of a wish than something i think is a realistic chance.

Prismall would be a great addition, and he's gotta be getting sick of missing out when he knows he'd be in the first 22 at pretty much any other club. I hope our blokes are taking his manager out to dinner/movies/brothels/whatever he's into regularly because we really need another mid or two who can hit targets.
