Honestly don’t give a heck about Lynch leaving. Overrated. What has he done in the last 2 years ? That’s right sweet fa. Always see him out after & before games. Blessing in disguise will get more in return especially now that moron Clayton not in control of list build.

Absolutely agree Miller shows more leadership in his left little toe.
Hang on he kicks 8 against Carlton every year so he must be a superstar.

Yep he should relinquish his captaincy or the club should take it off him NOW. But neither will happen because it will effect his value and the board are piss weak.

If it will effect his value, the board are doing the right thing to not strip him of his Captaincy, particularly when we have a current on field Captain...
Lynch is a great player in a bad situation. . No point slagging him off... I wonder how many of this board wouldn't leave to Hawthorn or a big club in his home state for big dollars after all he has given to our club... I've said it before the problem lies in that two successive seasons where we couldn't get 10 best 22 blokes on the paddock together, subsequently lost a lot and badly and players contracts expired and the big clubs came calling...
This club is in big trouble and I don't know how we are going to arrest the downward spiral... slagging off big Tom isn't going to do it.. thats for sure!

Definitely some valid points
However these are true ATM
1. He is not a leader
2. His greatest claim to fame is kicking 8 goals a year against the worst team of the last 25 years.

Why it would affect his value? If Lynch had a decency he would stepped down by himself even temporarily. That would actually increase his value as a person of character. How can he lead the club, young players and at the same time thinking about leaving at round 18. I would actually love if the leadership group would have him sit down and tell him that he can't be the captain while he is not committed.

Bad situation? He would get biggest dollar if he stays. He's only 25. It can change quickly if players stick together. New facilities, new coach, management, new assistant coaches, performance boss coming, actually a lot talent on a team. We will not have injuries forever.

Compare Lynch's situation with Rischitelli's. That's bad situation. He is 32, cooked, no success. Or Harbrow's. Lynch has plenty of time and could be part of solution. I wish him the best but him being the captain while not committed pisses me off.

Following your logic no player stays. Yes I agree, the club pays for crappy past and it could turn ugly as current AFL player movement system is a one way traffic to top teams. The only hope is that Dew and team are building great environment where players want to stay together while increasing academy players number. Still no guarantee. It could be a vicious cycle.

It will be telling what May, Martin, Wright, Miller will do. I would love May to publicly deny rumours like GWS Shiel did. If May will not commit long term in the off season we should probably name a new captain who is happy to stay long term (Swallow, Miller?). The last thing Suns need is to go through the same process next year with another captain.

I was referring to another post that said the board is piss weak for not demoting Lynch even though it would affect his value. Whether it affects is value or not was not my point, only that if it does affect his value then it is the boards job to keep his value high...
As for a bad situation, you are looking at it from a glass half full situation which is commendable but maybe not as realistic as going to a big club like Collingwood who have a great midfield that will give him every opportunity to kick 60 to 80 goals every year and enable him to reach his potential as a Buddy esk type player.. He would play in front of 60 to 80 k nearly every week at the home of footy and be a lot closer to a premiership.. be part of a club with amazing history.. live in his home state.. and be part of the famed Victorian footy community...
Its not for me I like the beach but it's not to hard to imagine someone like Tom wanting it for the 6 or 7 seasons he has left..
The alternative, stay with the Suns, play in front of 11000 every other week of which 5000 are barracking for the other team... come second last every year.. get shit delivery from the worst midfield in the comp.. have to put up with Aaron Hall strutting around like he is the reincarnation of Peter Matera..
Collingwood will pay him 1.1 squill and he would make a bit more down in Melbs for selling his soul...
Noone will care 6 months into next season and we will turn our attentions to slagging off to Stevie May for having the temerity not to waste his prime years on this sinking ship and instead go and play finals footy somewhere else..
I'm not going to restate this argument anymore because I die a little each time I do... but unfortunately it's the way I see it..

If you think The Suns are a sinking ship I'd advise you to go support another team
We aren't going anywhere and writing crap like that on our board is lowball

I wonder if he will show his face up here again this year.
Tom Lynch-Booooooooooooooooooooo
Well he did say he will be going back up to gold coast in the interview at the airport to start his rehab so looking like he is which seems strange 'If' he is infact leaving. I'm still 50/50 that he is

You are right king Sandytoes... all is light and fluffy at beautiful Metricon we can still make the finals this year mathematically so it will definitely happen... and I also hear Jaeger O'Meara is having second thoughts and wants to come back because he misses us so much...
Is that better, your royal highness, or am I allowed to tell it how it is?
I don't even support the Suns, and even I want to tell you to f*** off.

I was fine with the dose of current situation realism.
These are 8 year players who went through the first 3 years of stinking believing that good times would be ahead, a brief moment of actual good performance in 2014, a brief moment of optimism in the summer of 14/15 when we brought in a new coach and an AA free agent in Malceski, then 4 loooooong years of 4 wins, 6 wins, 6 wins, and now an 11 game losing streak with 12 firmly on the horizon this week.

The players also bargained their way to having the option to move as a free agent. We can agree or not, but this is a contracted right that players in Tom's position have. And a few more will have it next season (even more so, since a few will be unrestricted).

Unfortunately, we are moving into a phase of our existence where we have to be a good club to keep our establishment players from exercising their rights to move. GWS will face the same problem in the next year or two.

Also unfortunately, we have not been a good club for most of our existence. Respectability in performance across a season is not there yet, let alone pushing for finals.

So I am making a conscious decision to not get too annoyed at free agents leaving the club while we are struggling. They have earned the right to choose what they believe will be a better work environment, which at the moment is hard to argue. In this case, the club can also choose to say no and match any offer. So if the club really wants to keep Tom, they can put the pressure on and match. They won't, but they can so it is not all one way traffic.

On the other hand, I remain annoyed at Caddy and JOM and Prestia and Gaz the LW, for effectively forcing themselves out. That is where the real retention problem lies, not with free agents who have earned the right to look around. Most players never get that right, they are not good enough.

But we are absolutely not a sinking ship. We have lost a few decent sailors, and we would be ecstatic to draft a player as good as Tom Lynch with any draft picks we get, but there are some good players on the list, the club sounds like it is better shape off-field, Evans and TheCoch are not dills, Dew has the potential to be a good coach (or so most people tell us).

I remain in a long upward curve of optimism on the future of the Suns.

Emphasis on long, and it is really only upward if you remove all the really bad periods. Like campaigner, the Harley photo, the Gaz shoulder, drafting Taylor over Parker, not having a clue about how to set up a club properly, training out of Dongas in the Qld heat for 7+ years, and not having a very good midfield right when we need to be good.

So, onward and upward (provided you forget about the really bad bits).

Very level headed post. Can't like enough. Very different cases to Jaegar, Dion and Caddy. These guys have earned free agency, we promised the world and have delivered very little on it. We didn't keep up our end of the bargain. They are well within their right to look IMO. Not to say I wouldn't be disappointed and a bit hurt if they left, but I can understand their thinking.

I was optimistic but I am less now. The players movement rules are not working and favour players and top teams. Changes are needed. Will AFL make them or has power to make them is a question. Yes, Suns can match but what does it mean? Teams can't trade players so no A player will come to us as a part of deal at our current position. So we get some picks and start developing them again. If teams don't agree Lynch would go to PSD and I believe we get nothing. Teams being able to trade players would help. Unfortunately, this is not going to happen. Evans suggestion that players would not be able to go top 8 team has a merit. Another problematic rule is that teams have to spend min 95% salary cap. Relax that and bottom teams coud attract players with big money.

The only hope currently we have is that changes in our club are working, Dew is a great coach and creates environment players want to stay and we have luck with injuries (like Lions this year). Let's see what other un-signed players will do.

A bit annoyed by 'player earned the right'. It's just based on rules set up by AFL/players union agreement. Let's see how people view 'the right' next year if e.g. May, Wright, Miller, Martin would leave or even this year Thompson.

The reality is AFL totally failed in setting Suns up and we need additional assistance now until we are successful. COLA like payment, picks, etc. If not it could turn ugly.

I think 'earning' is right.
Most players don't earn the right to be sought after free agents.
Have to be with one team for at least 8 years, and have to be good enough that your current team does not want to let you go on your salary.
Most free agents are happily let go by their teams b/c of the compo and the salary they would be on.

Demons let Frawley go and got pick 3. Happy.
Cats let Motlop go and got pick 19. Happy.
Lions let go Rockliff go and got pick 20. Happy.

I keep saying that free agency is a 2-way street and teams can do well out of it as well.
It only becomes relevant when the player is really good and the current team is happy to pay the salary and give up any compo.
Danger a couple of years ago (Crows would have happily paid him what the Cats are paying him).
Dusty last year.
Tom this year.

There are not many. Most free agents are either signed ahead of free agency or happily waved off by the team.

It hurts us more than most since we don't have much of an option to go to the market and get a good player from another team to replace any quality free agents that leave.

I still think Tom’s heart wants to stay, but his head (and his advisors) are telling him to get the hell out of Dodge. Could explain why he looks even more miserable than usual.
You nailed it in one line.
If we were any good (now) he'd be staying. Gold Coast isn't a suburb in Lebanon. All apart from the bedwetter Caddy all signed a 2nd contract.
As for the future, it's never been brighter and I'm a cynical, pessimistic & glass nearly empty guy.
It's a rebuild there's no getting away from that.
But this time we have Swallow, May, Thompson, Wright, Martin, KK, Ainsworth, Miller, AhChee, Florini, Bowes, Hanley etc as the starting pieces.
We have state of the art facilities, not tin sheds. We have Dew not Bluey.
Not going to slag Lynch off myself as his heart would be in staying.

The problem is that if Lynch leaves more players may follow. Does May (a year older than Lynch) or other older players want to go through rebuild?

May bagged out O'Meara for leaving. He'd be a hypocrite if he followed and I certainly don't think he is one.
He's committed for next season and we just need to show improvement on and off the ground. That couldn't be too difficult looking at where we are now.
Use every trade, every pick and every spare $$ on midfielders. Ainsworth, Weller, Miller, Swallow, Ballard, Crossley, Florini aren't going anywhere.
The only 2 I'm concerned about are May and Martin. But an improved 2019 (and it will) will work in our favour.

If Lynch goes I'd be asking Maysie what he wants to stay and offering him 5 years to sign before the end of the year

I think Lynch is a decent bloke & a good clubman. So is May. I also think they're the right blokes to be co-captains of our team. They've both busted their guts for the Suns for 8 years. If their hearts are still in the Suns, they should stay. If not, they might as well go. I wouldn't hold it against either of them if they left.

Pretending that the head rules in matters of affaires des sportes is fine but the truth is it's the heart
While the head says"Thankyou for your service.Godspeed my good man and our heartiest and warmest well wishes for your past and future efforts", the heart says"Piss off you rat and don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out"
I suspect we need more heart and less cerebration in our supporters

My heart is definitely invested in the Suns. Good players leave every club. I wish that didn't happen. I'll always have more respect for the players who stay, but beating myself up about those who leave doesn't help anyone.
