1 clearance against the Dee’s & only 1 last week against the Blues. Long isn’t the shoe in everyone says he is.
Agree, Mitchell has been better than Long the last couple of weeks. 11 tackles from Mitchell tonight and seemed to quite down Rowell's offensive side of his game in the 2nd half. Mitchell's offence needs some work but I dont think he was our worst.

Not here for Long vs Mitchell discussions, but I thought Mitchell was fine, 20 disposals, 11 tackles with 75% DE.
Yeah, fine is how I’d describe it. His disposal was average and I didn’t like how often he went to ground, but his tackling was good and he helped us at the coalface

Tom is ahead of Long but they are not like for like. Height alone is a big difference. If competing for one spot, depends what we value more.

A comparison of their season average is skewed with Mitchell having only played 2 games. Long was sub twice IIRC.

Long as him on size. He’s a whopping 13cm taller.

Tom has averaged 5 more disposals

Marks and tackles are on par with one another

Tom has averaged one extra clearance.

Now here’s where it was interesting.
Tom frees for 2 per game to Long 0.9
Long frees against 1.3 per game to Tom 0.5. Mitchell draws frees and Long gives them away.

Long is better at 1%s. 1.5 to none
Long gained 23m more per game. Not an important stat for an inside mid though.

Tom disposal efficiency is at 80% and he opts to handball more. Long is lower at 68% and kicks more.

Long averages more clangers.

When Tom does kick, his kicking efficiency is higher.

Tom averages 3 more contested possessions per game.

Long averages 3.4 turnovers. Tom 0 on his small sample size.

Tom wins ground ball gets 8 to 5.5 except in F50 where Tom doesn’t really venture. Long does and has this covered 18 to 1.

Long wins centre clearances but Tom wins stoppage clearances.

Long can and has done back up ruck. Clearly Tom can’t.

They average the same marks but Long takes more I50. Tom doesn’t.

They’re pretty like for like on score involvements.

Pressure acts also like for like. For those who thing Long is better there.

Defensive half pressure acts Tom is ahead.

So it’s a bit of a mixed bag but I have Tom ahead on this. I do acknowledge as I said, this is on two games only.

Now if we want a bigger body and a ruck back up, definitely Long.

If we want to win clearances and have effective disposals, Tom is our man.

If Jaicos goes into the middle and we get a few back, they both could miss out.

+ Long will probably be playing for the next 10 years, and Tom definitely won't

Because his mid time is taken by Mitchell who can't play any other role is the team. Long will go back to the form he was once Mitchell is out again
He was good one week & ordinary the next before Mitchell arrived back. Both have weaknesses for sure.

Nothing against him, he just doesn't fit with Long and Pendles/Sidey.

Wont be forgotten for what he did in 2023 GF and has a Flag.

Tough decisions come when trying win flag

2010
Leon
Lockyer
Medhurst

2023
Adams
Noble

That's life.

We’ve got a flag to win and Mitchell is in better form than Long right now. Crazy idea but why don’t we play the guy who is in better form come finals? Long took Mitchell’s spot because Mitchell got injured for 18 months. Now that they’re healthy let them compete for it instead of giving handouts.

The real tough decision will be dropping Long if Mitchell is in better form come finals time.

Edit: Ned Long being dropped for being out of form come finals would certainly be like Johnny Noble again

Long is going through a rough patch but Mitchell got his ar*e handed to him in the 1/2 half. Not sure how he is in better form.

Titch played 1 good game against weak opposition.

Our whole midfield got their butts kicked in the first half. Not just Tom. Long included.
Let them fight for the spot & may the best man win. As somebody else said. If De Goey gets back in the middle, they may both struggle to hold a spot. Mitchell is better in & under & Long has better physical attributes & more possibilities. I think it's going to be fascinating. Both guys will be aware their spot in this side isn't a given. That's motivation right there.

I think only one can play in the finals. I suspect Fly prefers Long.

It’s way too early to make a call on Mitchell.

He’s had 2 games back after being out for over a year. One was against a reasonable opponent at the MCG where he did OK (for all Carlton’s shittyness, their clearance ability is considered fairly decent) and the other was poor against a solid opponent on their home deck.

Maybe the coaches will tune Mitchell’s game and he’ll be good? Maybe he won’t?

Yeah, the pundits like Matthew Lloyd and David King have their opinion and they are experienced and know their stuff …

… but they’re not Senior coaches, nor do they have visibility inside the AIA Centre.

That's fair, I might have been the one that had mentioned Jordy's return.

Point to remember is that during the comeback in the 2nd half when our mids turned it around, neither of Titch or Long were important factors.

That's how I see it. Mitchell isn't going to get faster, nor will his kicking improve.

I don't want to go too hard against Titch, and I suspect I already have, so this will be my last post on him this week.
