Player Watch Tom Mitchell (Delisted 2025)

It’s way too early to make a call on Mitchell.

He’s had 2 games back after being out for over a year. One was against a reasonable opponent at the MCG where he did OK (for all Carlton’s shittyness, their clearance ability is considered fairly decent) and the other was poor against a solid opponent on their home deck.

Maybe the coaches will tune Mitchell’s game and he’ll be good? Maybe he won’t?

Yeah, the pundits like Matthew Lloyd and David King have their opinion and they are experienced and know their stuff …

… but they’re not Senior coaches, nor do they have visibility inside the AIA Centre.
I just don’t think Fly is a massive fan, and sees more upside in Long. He talks about Mitchell being suited to winter conditions, and just doesn’t seem as enthusiastic about him as other players.

I might be on the wrong path but I think Mitchell will be one of the players to make way when we have De Goey back.

He'll be a solid inclusion to call upon if needed though. I think Titch knows where he stands and will be the ultimate pro

I'm sure that Fly won't be making decision about the Grand Final just yet. For two reasons: 1) We haven't made the GF yet! 2) IF we are lucky eno9ugh to make the GF the he will choose based on a number of factors such as form (at the time), any injuries or ailments they're carrying, the opposition we would be up against, weather conditions forecast for the day, and which one will complement the other players around them on the day.
I'll guarantee he won't making a decision in July....

Like all position, the ideal situation for a coach is to have a number of blokes competing for their respective positions leading up to the finals series. The coach will encourage that competition and provide opportunities for all to excell. When and IF we get to the final dance only then will the selection committee be challenged with the task. Let's hope we get there and let's hope that the committee have a hard time of it.

A hard luck GF story usually means you've got some depth. Hopefully for us supporters at least we have a couple GF week if we get there. Ginni not picking the quaddie at Moonee Valley didn't quite compare to poor old Nobes missing last time

Thanks for the premiership in 23 but the game has gone past him he's to slow and just hand balls wrecklessly fwd
I don't have any confidence in him any longer, and it doesn't seem as if he has much confidence in his body either. Looks as if he is feeling immense pressure whenever he gets the footy, regardless of how close the opposition actually is

Long was a good gap filler for Mitchell over the last 18 months. Now that Mitchell’s back he’s already gone over Long in just a few games despite still shaking off the rust. Can tell he’s got one final push left in him for September - ideally as sub due to us having a full team.

Yep, it’s not even close but some have such a hard on for Ned and they’ve developed a massive hate for Mitchell because of the fear he’ll come back and take his spot.

Ned can go back to VFL and try again next year. If we win the flag then it’d be a good time for Titch to give it away.

Although I’d have Mitchell in the starting side, I like a bit of pace and versatility for the sub.

I don’t think Mitchell outplayed Long by any margin

Mitchell looked slow and cumbersome to me at the ground. Both he and Ned could go out when Jordy comes back.
This is where I’m coming around to as well I reckon. If we have a fit team for September I think a midfield rotation of Nick / Pendles / Jordy / Josh with pinch hitting from Beau, Crisp & Sidey/Pez is the way to go.

I think Long will hold his spot.
Allan, Mitchell, Markov, Dean and Sullivan to make way for Howe, Hill, De Goey, Pendles and Frampton.

Beau still to return.

My bet is that Mitchell will go out next game for Pendles.

Pendles will then be managed against Hawks and Mitchell will come back in.

Not sure what happens after that except Pendles plays.

He's handy back up but don't really want him playing finals if we can avoid it
This is how I feel, however, I wonder if we are being to hard on Mitchell. 29 Disposals, 77% game time, at 84% DE. The whole team looked a step off, not just tonight but the last few weeks. Training loads are up accord to Moore, which I hope explains this.

The thing that worries me about Mitchell, is that his contested possessions and clearance work look miles off. Most of his stats are currently on the Outside where we don't want him. While in the last he was in good chains, he is not going to have that space against the good teams. Let's see if he can elevate in the role we need him in - Clearance work and channelling the ball out efficiently.

How could you Pez in the midfield (where he has barely played all year) is better than Mitch or Long? I can't believe it.

Mitchell did enough to be selected again next week, and then he'll need to perform again, which I expect him to do. Need him to shut down Neale again if possible.

Because I trust Perryman in there much more than what Mitchell has shown all season and what Long has done recently.

Neither of the latter two have at all looked up to finals footy the last month or so, and I think holding onto some hope that Mitchell can stop Neale is unlikely at most generous

So, looks like a few Ned Long trolls have jumped the fence and are out and about, I wonder if they use hand signals to communicate with one another or just grunt!

Mitchell has played three games this year for 26, 21, 29 touches, mostly in the coalface. With high tackle counts as well.

I would have loved to have had him last week to sit on Serong and probably save us the game.

His stats are great. His touches do more damage to us than the opposition, which is half the issue.

I don’t think he can sit on anyone anymore. Too slow and can’t keep his feet

He was 84% disposal efficiency today - that's excellent, and certainly not something that damages us.
