Tom Williams Retires

Does anybody else see the irony in the injury that forced him to retire was a hamstring, a common footballer's injury that had never actually happened to Williams before?

Bruce Jenner reference made me laugh.

Funny man, Tommy. BulldogsTV will miss him.

Hope he stays around the club and help teaches the kids how to mentally deal with injuries and stuff like that.

Sad news but not totally unexpected.
Gave it his all for the club but unfortunately his body wouldn't hold up to the rigers of the afl.

All the best in the future Tom.

Terrible news. Got a little bit emotional watching Tommy have a chat to Bob. What a legendary bloke.

Feels a little too soon to start talking about this but where does this leave us list-wise? Are we allowed to upgrade a rookie?

I feel bad. I'm going to go and have a good hard look at myself.

As far as I know, no we can't - he's still on the list until the first list lodgement after the season ends.

Read my post and you'll see that it isn't the point. The point was that the injuries have been good for his career/legacy.
How do you know? We never saw the best of him. Maybe he would've been a champion, it's a complete unknown. Before he even played a game he'd had enough injuries to be permanently affected by them.
In the end he held up Centre half back for a full year in a prelim final team and that's still more than most that play AFL can say.
I also remember his second game of the big league, he had 18 disposals and took 13 marks, you could just tell he could play.

Woke up to this news, and I admit I was saddened by it.

Whether you liked him, or disliked him. You have to give him full credit for the way he went about things. He has to be just about one of the toughest players mentally to go through the amount of injuries that he has, over many years, yet still wakes up the next day, determined to fight his way back into the red, white and blue jersey. Whilst most of the support has been positive, have seen elsewhere some very derogatory comments made about him. Which disgusts me about some of our fans, there is opinions, and then their is filth.

People are short minded to forget how good he was for us at times, particularly during the Preliminary final years. It wasn't the odd game or two as some on here claim, he actually played quite a few consistent games in a row, with some big games as well. And that year that he managed to somehow play 23 games. He showed what he is capable of when he started to get some consistent Football in him. Some people can take that sh*t that he never ever played good or showed anything and stick it far up themselves. The guy deserves more respect than he got

Unfortunately football is a cruel game at times, and it is usually the least kind on those who don't deserve that kind of misfortune. He never did get a chance to reach his full potential, and deserved 100 games so much, he was getting so close as well. Thanks for all you have given for the club mate, hope many other players have the same fighting mentality that you did. May have been the best call for himself, as you can only take so much injuries before it starts to affect ones quality of life. All the best for the future, and hopefully he can enjoy the next few years injury free :)

Can't we just put him on the long term injury list for the hamstring? He's clearly injured and i can't imagine that the AFL doctor gets to decide whether it is a long term injury or not.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe those on the LTI list have to train/do the bare minimum in order to qualify. Since he's retired, he won't do any of that and is thus ineligible for the LTI list. I could be wrong, but I know other clubs haven't been able to upgrade rookies in place of a retired player, even if they are injured.

The herald sun article suggests he might be going into player welfare in the future

You might be able to mount an argument that they were good for his legacy if you believe that his playing ability was over stated but saying they have been good for his career is ridiculous. If it wasn't for injuries he'd probably be on 150 games by now and would have at least a couple of decent years left in him

Huh? That's exactly what I'm saying...

'Maybe he would've been a champion', 'we never saw the best of him'.... This is my point ffs. What if we actually did see the best of him??

Comprehension skills at an all-time low around here.

Can someone please put Butane's recent post about Tom Williams leaving the club here. I want toread it again in the light of his retirement announcement and the clubs comments.

from almost the first game i remember tom being cruelled by injury. from his foot, to his shoulders. Just a shocking run. i always hoped he would live up to his potential, but not to be

Your favourite phrase right there :D

Also it's good to see that the majority of posters on the main board, bar 1 or 2 that I want to violently assault, are saying exactly what we are saying. Could have been a great player but ruined by injuries.

Is it? I tend to forget most of what I've posted :p

I actually expected the main board to react savagely - irrelevance talk, insulting Tommy, having a go at the Bulldogs - but fortunately only a couple of morons, one of which seems to follow me around, have had anything negative to say.
