East Aswan inhabitants have accidentally stumbled upon what is believed to be a set of rock-hewn tombs on Elephantine Island, which displays a wide range of monuments from the prehistoric period to the Greco-Roman era.

Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim told Ahram Online on Monday that early studies on the tombs' wall paintings reveal that they are dated to the New Kingdom era, which makes a very important discovery that may change the history of Elephantine Island.

It is really exciting to think that there is still locations out there that are yet to be found. Great find by the locals

You always get the feeling in Egypt that something grand could just be underneath your feet. Incredible to think they've discovered them on the speck of rock though.

I've never been to Egypt, I wish the civil unrest would cease so it was safe to do so again. Have you been to Egypt grizzlym

Yep. I've been twice.

I lived in Cairo for 6 months many years ago.

Aswan is in the south of Egypt. Down near the Sudan. If you followed the Nile down you'd go into the Sudan and re-trace the journey of the great paddle steamers, but that's another thread in itself. Anyway, what many people don;t realise is there were Sudanese Pharaohs. Sometimes called 'black Pharaohs'. And there are pyramids in the Sudan but way smaller than those in Egypt. There's a great archaeological site of a great city that these Sudanese Pharoahs inhabited right near the Egyptian border, off memory. It's being excavated now.

The Sudan is a whacked out place. Scary joint. Lots of men waving swords around when I was there.

Abit off topic.......I would presume that one day not that long ago, the public only associated pyramids with Egypt. It seems now we are finding pyramids all over the world. Fascinating topic in itself.

Sudan has a violent reputation right now. I have never been there but from what you see and read, It is some place that travelers/foreigners would be asked to avoid

With good reason. The Sudan is a lawless, crazy place. Seriously dangerous.
