Stanley- No. 21 in the 2005 Draft
Cook - No. 23 in the 2005 Draft
Toovey.. No idea

Has anyone got any valid insight into what we can expect from these players? I can understand why they didnt get much of a go last year but what has there form been like? and what do we have to look forward to?

Will they get a real crack next year, ie Thomas?

Stanley- Looks very slow. Built like a german battle tank, but the game has changed. He's only 18 though, he will get an opportunity to settle down to the tempo then let's see how he goes.

Cook- Made a sizeable impression in a few games, as a lively goalkicking half forward. He's built for endurance so I could see him take on a midfield position in the future.

Toovey- Got better as the season went forward I'd say. He is a "chirpy" defender. He loves the 'run and carry' style game and plays with confidence. Mainly plays on the opposition's third-tall forward.

Bottom aged or not, Stanners & Cook have to show something tangible next year.

Cook is talented but inconsistent. Sort of plays like Caracella, and can go missing like Caracella. Hopefully he's worked on his tank and lifts his output at Willi. If he can do this, then he may get a game next year.

Stanners is of a Millane-esque build. Is hard at it, considering he's very young, but I have major question marks over kicking and general footy smarts. Will need to become super-fit and strong, with a view to becoming an Archer-esque HBF.

Toovey is top aged and has been promoted, presumably on a two year contract. He should get a run fairly early on. Good pace, athleticism, but average skills at best. His impact will be IMO about the same as Maxwell (although Max has notably different attributes and weaknesses). That is, he won't be a super star, but has the potential to be more than servicable.

Cook as we know is a flanker, and is always going to be inconsistent. Had some big games, both VFL and TAC Cup, and FIGJAM linking him with Caracella seems reasonable, except Cook doesn't seem to have the brain, yet has more of a some-what excitement.

Stanley's got size but is determined and uses his body. He is slow as a dashing midfielder/back flanker, but he is rated high for a reason. Was linked to Dean Solomon, except Stanners hasn't been put in a medium defender role, so it is hard for me to identify what he can do.

Haven't seen enough of Toovey but has size and is a good athlete. Seems like a guy who can be a responsible and genuine backman.

So can we expect a bit from them??
Can you see any of the ones named being 100 game players??

Also the 2005 draft go's pretty dry after pick 20 so cant expect to much i spose..

Stanley is up against it in terms of impressing us because he came into the league perhaps even needing to slim down a little - A rarity in AFL football. Hence, he is actually less athletic now than he will be in 12 months. My problem is seeing him actually make it in our side. I don't think he's got the physical attributes to make it as a medium sized defender ahead of Maxwell, Anthony, O'Brien and Toovey, nor do I see him as having the speed to play on small forwards. Unless he can become a midfielder, I doubt he makes it, unfortunately.

Ryan Cook is an interesting sort of player, in that he probably only really has one position, but he is the right type for it. He should turn into a marking half-forward at AFL level, but he is the type of aggressive player that can be good at pressuring the ball and keeping it inside the forward 50. Maybe he could turn into a linkman on the wing, but I'd say he's 90% likely a half forward if he makes it.

Alan Toovey is interesting - Smart player, very athletic, sticks to his man, but is unfortunately just too short for KP. However, he could be a Dale Morris-style medium defender if he makes it.

I really want Ryan Cook to play seniors next year, iv heard big wraps on him, and supposedly ment to be very quick, something which we need, pace!

STANLEY:

If I remember correctly Stanley had pretty impressive draft camp results in oterms of acceleration and agility and that's what impressed alot of clubs about him, his size and burst of speed. He probably either lost alot in trying to tone alot of his mass down or trying to shed a few kilos and build a bigger engine, or just his confidence especially given he had a few hamstring problems this year.
He was one of the youngest in the whole draft (top 3 or 4 i think) and that is a plus, but his body is already pretty developed and was expected to develop earlier than the likes of Thomas/Pendlebury.
When I've seen him his kicking is very hit and miss. He can deliver low long precise kicks perfectly then shank the next kick awfully.
He has an ok turn of pace but has poor awareness of his pursuers. Gets pinged with holding the ball alot. Is a good evader especially for his bulk but rarely does it give him an advantage. I haven't seen enough of him to really make any hard or fast comment on him. Just need to give him time since alot didn't go right for him this year. My AFL comparison would probably be Colin Sylvia but alot rawer and less polish.

COOK

Looks pretty good. He is a bit like O'Keefe in the way he plays on the half forward line. Very good overhead mark. Can play midfield too. Defensive efforts are lacking as a forward however which is important nowadays as a small forward. Although this can easily be worked on. I don't really know but I just think Cook seems to have "it".

TOOVEY
Looks good but a few big queries.
Kicking - see Stanley although a bit tidier nowadays, still prone to the odd shocker.
Size and height - the J.Cloke factor. He is about 188cm. However unlike Jason he has a fair bit of pace about him and can play on smaller quicker players. He is probably more adept at playing on the last line.

Has s'loads of courage, throws his body into packs alot.
Likes to rebound and is pretty zippy but from what I've seen he is rarely exposed by his oponent.
Takes calculated risks when rebounding. Gets back on his oponent quickly rather than filling the hole between his oponent and the ball which Jason Cloke is fond of doing, which leads to alot of times where J.Cloke would have to run with the flight and spoil (which JC is actually pretty good at). His philosiphy seems to be if the team hasn't got the ball he better man up if his oponent is a threat (i.e. anywhere near the 50), and if HE has a good chance of getting the ball he will be at that contest. Seems to be straight ahead and doesn't chip sideways although in doing so can lead to him making irrational decsiions (kicking into the flood) which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

your kidding right?..the kid is 18 yo and is coming up to his first "proper" year of senior football!...lift his tank? LOL dont you watch training or hear results?...ummm cook actually ran 5th in the 2km time trail on friday..after one preseason he is showing signs.i think we should all sit back and enjoy having the kids around and then see them grow into men

(not trolling or having a dig)

Have heard from source at the pies that Toovey is the most likely to get quite a few games next year.Cook may do well but stanley still has a way to go.The one to watch for is John Anthony .I have heard he is a gun player and will be the next Jimmy Clement.Let's hope all four work out.

I have heard alot of people rap up Cook but my big concern is he looks soft. I know some first yearers can be a bit tentative but the few times I have seen him he has looked like he was going to crap his pants when he heard footsteps. Does anyone else share this concern??

I must qualify this by saying I have only seen him 2 or 3 times so I am by no means and expert on the kid

FWIW

Stanley - Pies are very happy with him. Sat down with him at year end were pleased with progress. Will spend more time in middle next year for Willi.

Cook - I am not the fan you blokes are. Mainly bc I would have rathered them take Swallow which long term was a better fit for a side that needed its mid rebuilding. I think its clear he wont make a mid - HF at best. Goes missing.

Toovey - massive fan. will play HB role or BP. Pies will be hoping Anthony, Toovey, Maxy and OBrien will be there back 4 long term.
