Emerald vs Upwey they were around the +20 (don't know exact number), they were also up by 6 50m penalties. Including the triple against Mitchell despite him getting punched in the head twice and throwing a guy to the ground. I doubt it's happened 4 times tho.

Coaches would want the free kicks stats because it helps analyse team performance. If they consistently give too many away, then there is a problem to address.
(Or those filthy white maggots are just proved to be on the take again.....

Actually, there was a lot of talk about the 50m penalty being reduced to 25m.
Apparently our grounds are exactly one half the length of the AFL venues.
Any ideas?

Can't disagree with your list of The Finger's attributes lol jks, although I think you have been overly generous and have held back a bit. He does have a bit of an identity crisis as well. Posts on the main board under the name of The Finger who supposedly follows the Dees, and Hump 17 who follows the Saints. Maybe he is also Peter Hore, the unhinged serial pest.

All posts under both Aliases either defend the Saints ( never the Dees ), or attack the Pies. We have found that any facts or assertions he makes have to be closely scrutinised for accuracy and integrity. Seems like you may have similar issues?

Can't believe it's taken this long to unvail The Finger...... Does make alot of sense now and with all the facts on the table it's as simple as 1 + 1 to work out! Hope it doesn't hold him back from posting on here, he makes for such great reading. With more clubs than Greg Norman in his bag he must have to use a cart to get himself around the Warby Golf Club goat track! Great to see his heart still lies at the end of the highway. Such a decorated man in the Yarra Valley and for Warby, larger than the whole Walker family!

50m penalty is to harsh on yarra valley grounds. Fair enough in AFL but we have the added bonus if an act warrants it we can yellow or red card as well.

Agree Fisbo, been a bugbear of mine for years. There's no reason why we cant have 25 and 50 mtr penalties. I took a mark in the 2s a few weeks ago v Upwey about 60 mtrs out, I went to kick it but then stopped and went back. If the guy on the mark went over it, it must've been by 10mm maximum. Next thing you know I'm at the top of the goal square. Far too harsh a penalty IMO. For those "basic" infringements, make it 25, for the more serious ones "severe hits after kicking/marking", "demonstrative at umps" etc then ping em 50...

Now those are far more sensible points than arguing about the size of the grounds!!
For a start, NO AFL ground is the size of Healesville and at the other end of the scale, even our smallest ground is far more than half the size of the MCG!
I suppose my argument is that the 50m penalty is awarded AFTER a team has won a 'free' kick - either a mark or infringement. Originally, the 15m rule was proving ineffective. The powers that be probably introduced the 50m as a deterrent for time-wasting, late hits, etc, (it worked, imo) on the assumption that it is an additional free kick - a reasonable kick being approx 50m: hence the distance. (A kick is the same length whether at Belgrave or Healesville, btw!)
I also recall how the 50m rule drastically reduced the amount of yellow cards that were issued! Another important reason to keep it.
However Tim, your point about introducing a 25m rule is well worth consideration. The umps are basically stuck without a penalty for lesser (but still warranted) offences when a team has free possession and your point gives umps a bit more scope to mete out an appropriate penalty. I think we all want that!
We do seem to be skirting the fact that (admittedly, very few) umpires might overuse the 50m rule - generally to stamp their authority on the match. These are often BIG "50s"!! I suspect some get carried away for their own ends rather than for the benefit of the game. It's interesting to observe that the AFL umps use it less than local footy.
Most umps are just compelled to follow the rules and probably apply it reluctantly in these lesser cases. It is my guess that those umps usually tend to be well short of the regulation 50m, so maybe they are pre-empting your idea?
They still get the point across, though.
A good compromise is to introduce the 25m and keep the 50m in the holster a bit more. As you also mention, the yellow and red cards are still the ultimate weapon for more serious stuff.
Just hope that the rare officious umps don't compensate by showing cards excessively!
The rules are there to develop the game, not to be manipulated by coaches, players, spectators or umpires.

The key to it is ensuring the circumstances for a red / yellow card or 50m (25m) penalty are clearly published to all. You don't want a choice for a 50 vs 25 to be subjective. i.e. you don't want an umpire having to decide that a late tackle is 25m but a BAD late tackle is 50m. Too open to inconsistency as 1 umpire might think something warrants 25 but another might want 50.

Monniehawk is correct in saying that a 50m was introduced because it was considered to be the distance of a good kick. Wasn't intended to bear any resemblance to dimensions of a ground.

I spent numerous years at EFL with the 25m penalty in place of 50m and in all honesty I don't think it was severely better or worse than what we have here. I might be putting myself out on a limb but back when Glenn James was coaching us, he said he felt that half the 50's were caused by the umpires. Whilst I think he was exaggerating slightly, it was a good point that I think over the years umpires have dealt with better. For example, when paying a free / mark, he said don't call to the player "come back 2". You need to be clear and specific - say "come back 2 metres". A player could have otherwise interpreted that as 2 metres, 2 feet, 2 steps, 2 inches - thought he'd done the right thing and then gets pinged.

This round makes it more interesting, Good win by Upwey over Mt Eve, and Healesville over Monny. Suddenly only 2 points between the bottom 2 sides.

Also moves Wandin to 3rd. Upwey 6th only 2 points out of 5.
