What do you do when a child turns violent? I've previously mentioned that my son Brian is autistic: trouble is, he's now 16, is as tall as his mother, and a fair bit stronger than she is.

In the last month or so, Brian has started hitting his Mum, and putting his hands around her neck & squeezing hard. School starts next week, and my poor wife is counting the days!!!

We're seeing a paediatrician next month - hopefully he'll refer us to a psychiatrist, who will prescribe some medication, which will slow Brian's tantrums down a little.

I love my boy dearly, but he's a helluva challenge right now!!!!!

Surely your GP can refer you to a psychiatrist. This is now a dangerous situation, thankfully one I haven't had to face. It must be extremely distressing for your family.

My advice is to explore all professional avenues that you can as quickly as possible.

Disability SA should also be able to provide better advice than us nuffies on an internet forum.

Autism SA should be able to offer advice and support.

Intellectual Disability Association of SA is a peak body representing people with an intellectual disability in SA and might be able to offer advice.

You and your wife definitely deserve better than that mate, the only advice I can give you is the same as FF, you need to push the point as far as possible with the paediatrician or a gp for a referal to a psychiatrist.
Surely there is some form of medication available that would help without turning the lad into a zombie.

Good friends of mine ( both in their late 60's ) have an only child, a 40 year old daughter, who has threatened to kill them on multiple occasions.
She has no known `mental ailment ' but is unfortunately severely affected by drugs and alcohol.
5 kids, all under 15, who get dumped with the grandparents everytime she goes on a blinder, and the authorities can't ( or won't ) do a thing to help.

Hey man....

That really is a scary situation....

I know you and wife love your son...but your wife's safety has to come first...

All I can say this is a must for the experts to give you opinions...

I am no expert but I hear a certain diet can help...

But yeah mate get expert opinions on the matter

Have you worked his diet Phil? I'm sure you have, but as he gets older it may need some tweaking. Paleo diets have a fantastic effect on autistic kids. I know from close personal experience.

Trouble is he's a VERY fussy eater - there's only limited things that he eats. And any medication that is prescribed for him will need to be in liquid form, because he refuses to take tablets.

Seroquel up to 1200mg/day could be a blessing for your son

My wife's birthday is at the end of June, and earlier this week I contemplated what might be the best present I could get for her. I then thought to myself, what could be better for her than time away from Brian? It just so happens that her birthday coincides with my mother-in-law's visit to Adelaide (the in laws live in Sydney). Between us, we hatched a plan for mother and daughter to catch a bus to Glenelg on Saturday, June 25. They'll then spend Saturday night and Sunday night at a motel in Glenelg, before leisurely making their way home when it suits them on the Monday. I'll take the Monday off work to get the boys to school.

Hopefully my present will allow my beautiful wife to recharge her batteries sufficiently, ready to face life's challenges again!!!

My sister works for the DSC here in Perth. If you ever need ideas on how to get the support you need; please PM and I'll tap into her knowledge. No doubt after 16 years, you are probably an expert and know the short comings of the system.

Happy to report that we've managed to get some respite care, starting next week. We drop him off on Tuesday morning and don't pick him up until Thursday afternoon. It'll seem like a little slice of heaven!!!
