Ya gonna go far
Just wondered if someone could help me in tracking the history of an email.

Its only been sent directly to me on a hotmail acc, and all I want to know really is the general vacinity of where the email came from..say 50km radius, and the ISP.

This cant be hard can it?

Too easy. Look in the field called 'from'. See the the name in there, ring up the person whose name it is and ask them where they emailed from. Voila!

Otherwise it's pretty much impossible, unless you have an extremely advanced knowledge of who owns what IP network ranges.

And even then in 99% of cases it's impossible.

Well no, the Internet Headers give you a bit of information, the last two 'received' give you the smtp server and the name of the sending computer. The ISP details are not recorded anywhere. But if the user sent them via an online service such as Hotmail, then that information will be the server name in LA.

Unless the user sent the email through a pop account, then that information is just not relevant. And even if they did send it through a pop account it would be meaningless as they would have to set up an account through whatever institution. And even if they did that, you'd still be stuffed, because you can't access the header info on mail sent to hotmail accounts.

In short, there is no way of gaining the information you are seeking
