Every reference i can find lists the first MVP as Bob Pettit, in 1955-56 and every reference says that Pettit won two MVP's, firstly in 55-56 and again in 58-59.

The league's first MVP Award was handed out after the 1955-56 season when the players voted and chose guard Bob Pettit of the St. Louis Hawks. Bob led the NBA in points (25.7) and rebounds (16.2) per game that season.

The Hawks showed some improvement during their first year in St. Louis, winning 33 games during 1955-56. Most of the credit for the improved showing had to be given to Pettit, who was named the NBA Most Valuable Player after leading the league in scoring (25.7 ppg) and rebounding (16.2 rpg).

In a book I have at home, "The Official History of the NBA", it doesn't mention the 1955-56 award, not that I'm going to complain, because Pettit is one of my favourite non-Lakers.
It sort of stuffs up my earlier question, although the Hawks did still make the playoffs.
