Neil Craig is quoted as saying that he hates trade time, because of the way it devalues players as little more than a commodity. However, he is happy to trade players if they look like being short of opportunities at the AFC with potentially scope for more games at other clubs.

So, which players would be looking for greater opportunities elsewhere next year? Who are our "trade bait" players this year? What are they worth?

With Adelaide's aging list, I would be looking to improve our draft position rather than trading for players.

Hayden Skipworth
Easily the most obvious candidate. He's now behind Knights and probably Douglas in the pecking order and will be struggling to get a game in 2007. I'd accept a 3rd round draft selection for him.

Kris Massie
His trade value has risen significantly this year. The fact that he has been omitted this week though would indicate that he might be on the outer for selection in the future. Like Skippy, I'd take a 3rd rounder for him - maybe a low 4th rounder.

Ken McGregor
OK, this one's a smokey. With half our forwards injured this year, he held our attack together yet he can't force his way into the side come finals time. Is this a sign for the future, where we depend upon forwards who are more mobile than Grug? I'd accept a combination of one 2nd rounder and one 3rd rounder for him.

Scott Stevens
Has had a breakthrough year - was headed for the scrapheap, but turned it around to the extent that he was probably briefly considered for the AA CHB position. He's probably worth a 2nd rounder now.

Ian Perrie
Can't see him attracting any attention now - he had more value last year, when both WA clubs were struggling up forward. Probably won't be on the table, but a 2nd and 3rd rounder would be worth considering.

Rhett Biglands
Could potentially go on the table with the tag of "premiership ruckman". With Hudson now fit for duty, and M&M demanding selection before they walk for lack of opportunity, there's every chance that Biglands may be offered up as trade bait. There's no shortage of teams looking for a lead ruckman this year - and no shortage of possible candidates. Then again, the other candidates (Gardiner & Everitt) both have issues. The only thing counting against Biglands is his age (he turned 29 three weeks ago), otherwise I'd say we'd be looking for a 1st and 3rd selections. As it is, 2nd and 3rd would satisfy me.

Who have I missed? Am I way off in my valuations?

with rhett his age proboly counts against him. I thought he was 25 but i was way off... If he was 24 i'd give our pick 17 or 19 for him, great ruckman but proboly only 2-3 yrs left.

Skipworth isn't quite lean enoughh,id love mattner though but i think his off.

Ahh i wouldve thought you guys need mcgregor and perrie in the team but then again what would i know.

IMO it you've got 2-3 other half decent ruckman i'd trade a younger one off as you wont get rhetts worth and his value is very high to your team. And thats about it, well drilled team you guys have got.

i think so too!
Looks like that list is full of KPP's. thats not real smart. and depth is what you want anyway. not a a ****load of 18 year olds. a few younguns is good, but why would we get rid of all our experienced KPP's?
for me i think we'll be quiet at trade week unless someone wants to leave!

Fair call. He's not overly injury prone, so you'd probably get good service out of him in the time he has remaining.

Don't know what you mean about Skippy not being "lean enough". He's fairly short, not overly quick and doesn't have a long kick, but weight is not a problem. Skippy is 100% heart.

Mattner has just re-signed, but make us an offer we can't refuse and I'm sure we'd consider putting him on the table.

Can't see us trading both of them, but one could possibly be traded.

Clarke is retiring this year.

Other than Biglands, we have four ruckmen - Hudson, Maric, Meesen and Griffin.

Hudson was our #1 ruckman in '05 before injury, he has been playing with North Adelaide for the past month or so. Griffin is a "development" player.

Of greater concern are Maric & Meesen, both second year rookies. Maric played 8 games this year, Meesen has yet to debut. Both re-signed this year, but only for one year each. The impression I get is that they have given the club something of an ultimatum - play us in the seniors, or we will be looking for opportunities elsewhere in 2008. Most Crows fans would rather see us retain this pair than Biglands.

One player sticks out based on our team balance

Biglands could receive a 2nd rounder I would have thought. I mean Everitt (who is undoubtedly better) is about to get a 2 yr deal at 32. Rhett has another 3-4 yrs left in him

I wouldnt be trading any of our KPP - we have a lack of already

Jericho could attract some interest but his stock would be relatively lowly rated currently

Skippy/Massie etc - yeah perhaps, but late 3rd/4th round doesnt overly excite me

why accept prices that won't help us in the slightest?

sure it would be nice to get a couple of 2nd round picks - but we need Pez & kenny a lot, lot more.
