Neil Craig is quoted as saying that he hates trade time, because of the way it devalues players as little more than a commodity. However, he is happy to trade players if they look like being short of opportunities at the AFC with potentially scope for more games at other clubs.
So, which players would be looking for greater opportunities elsewhere next year? Who are our "trade bait" players this year? What are they worth?
With Adelaide's aging list, I would be looking to improve our draft position rather than trading for players.
Hayden Skipworth
Easily the most obvious candidate. He's now behind Knights and probably Douglas in the pecking order and will be struggling to get a game in 2007. I'd accept a 3rd round draft selection for him.
Kris Massie
His trade value has risen significantly this year. The fact that he has been omitted this week though would indicate that he might be on the outer for selection in the future. Like Skippy, I'd take a 3rd rounder for him - maybe a low 4th rounder.
Ken McGregor
OK, this one's a smokey. With half our forwards injured this year, he held our attack together yet he can't force his way into the side come finals time. Is this a sign for the future, where we depend upon forwards who are more mobile than Grug? I'd accept a combination of one 2nd rounder and one 3rd rounder for him.
Scott Stevens
Has had a breakthrough year - was headed for the scrapheap, but turned it around to the extent that he was probably briefly considered for the AA CHB position. He's probably worth a 2nd rounder now.
Ian Perrie
Can't see him attracting any attention now - he had more value last year, when both WA clubs were struggling up forward. Probably won't be on the table, but a 2nd and 3rd rounder would be worth considering.
Rhett Biglands
Could potentially go on the table with the tag of "premiership ruckman". With Hudson now fit for duty, and M&M demanding selection before they walk for lack of opportunity, there's every chance that Biglands may be offered up as trade bait. There's no shortage of teams looking for a lead ruckman this year - and no shortage of possible candidates. Then again, the other candidates (Gardiner & Everitt) both have issues. The only thing counting against Biglands is his age (he turned 29 three weeks ago), otherwise I'd say we'd be looking for a 1st and 3rd selections. As it is, 2nd and 3rd would satisfy me.
Who have I missed? Am I way off in my valuations?
