EASY done, Tommy. It would be a lot quicker.
The red-heaed Buddha wouldn't even beat Moons over 75 metres or 100 metres. The red-haired chump is far too slow for 2006 footy.

He more spirit and puts more heart and soul into the GFC than half of your team does for the NMFC. I think you like to cal it "shinboner spirit"

I realise the game is getting faster but this post seems to imply he had speed to start with. Ling has been down but he will be back. Mark these words.... There is a place for the Ling's in AFL.

No he isn't. Corey and Bartel are both better midfielders, and on this year's form Paul Chapman is matching him as well. I'm hoping for Ling it's just a form slump but this season he has been very poor. Much better performance against St.Kilda but his disposal is still iffy.

Ling is better than Corey...

The idea is worth discussion, my thoughts on it are that Ling is both one of the reasons we have become a top 4-6 side and also one of the reasons we will wont this years premiership. He is a wonderful leader and fantastic player who has served Geelong very well in his time. He is also a player who has been exposed in a number of games by teams running off him, he is the slowest in a slow midfield. In terms of a purely football and team balance sense, Ling is the logical player to offload now, he will not be a AFL midfielder in two years, the game will pass him by if he doesn't change his game and become a impact midfield player off the bench or a forward. HOWEVER that does not account for the intangible factors that he brings to the table, leadership, heart, courage, team bonding, change room banter etc, all very important in the make up of a football club. Many clubs have regretted letting quality people like Ling go in the past. Geelong will not trade Ling we all know that, I don't believe they should, but the poster who raises the idea should not be burned (as the ill informed are doing), there is some merit in the discussion.

It seems to me this talk has only come about over the past few weeks, because of a reasonably slow start to 2006.

Last year, anyone who even thought of trading Ling would have been crucified, and rightly so.

Ling is one of the most important players at Geelong, enough said. More important than Corey, Enright etc.

As I have said, he has been our best performer over the past 4 years with Scarlett. He has a few credits up his sleeve...

At least he's been getting a bit of the ball, unlike others...

Ling is a far inferior player to Joel Corey. Bartel, Chapman, Ablett and a few others are also much better midfielders than Linga. He just doesn't have what it takes to be an elite midfielder, and the game becoming faster in even the past two years with the rule changes and the drafting of more and more athletes, have hastened his demise.

That said, I don't think that necessarily means we should trade Ling, for two reasons. As you say he is very important, but for his leadership and presence rather than his purely football contribution. Secondly, I very much doubt we would get value for him in a trade. Despite his strengths, I honestly don't think many clubs would be interested in a slow, one-sided player with no penetration in his disposal. And I can't blame them.

It would be great if we need to find a role for him. I don't know what it might be, but it is NOT as an onballer. But if we can't find a suitable role, despite what I have said, then we must consider trading him and getting the best deal we can. He is too much baggage to carry at the moment.

Ling may be turning it over a bit lately, but Corey has been doing it his whole career...

Try and imagine a geelong side without him.

I don't need to imagine - the NAB Cup final against Adelaide. Ling got injured and went off early. We came from behind to win. Interesting.

Again, I certainly don't think he should be traded but I wouldn't mind seeing him dropped. He seems to be the most sacred of sacred cows down there - and there are a few.

i agree, and that was the reason for my very saracastic thread about someone blaming woja for the loss that was subsequently closed.

i dont think ling should get traded but he IS NOT, repeat, IS NOT a midfielder. he is not quick, not a clearance king, not effective with his foot skills, etc. stop playing him there. the opposition must lick their lips when they see him coming to them.

and if he was such a great leader then where was he on saturday??

what must go is this "sacred cow phenomena" or "he is a great clubman" bull that breeds mediocrity.

agree 100%. he played forward in his younger days for a reason.

to everyone that keeps saying ling is a leader and future captain, answer me this:

what has he done lately that shows he is a leader?

he is soft, slow and useless with the ball.

if you want an example of leadership qualities, watch the way rooke plays his footy.

Trade Ling for Spida.
Spida and Ottens, king comes in for his 4 games or so.
Mooney CHF & captain.
just one trade, and moons won't put up with any **** and knows how to hurt and motivate.

Have you seen his last 4 years?

the past is the past, we must move on.

he is not a midfielder and we are getting killed because of it. he is not the sole reason either but it doesnt help when your most 'fit' but slowest and least skilled midfielder is obviously playing in the wrong position.

stop making excuses.

shaun burgoyne, daniel cross, andrew embley, paul hasebly, daniel harris, sam mitchell, simon goodwin all sound good if we could get some like that...:)
Which clubs do you think would part with these players in return for Ling?

Ling is an old-fashioned football player. Why would teams want to trade a quicker, younger player in return?

Personally, I'm not Ling's biggest fan, he's too slow and his disposal is questionable at best. However, Before we start talking about trading him I think we should try him at full forward or in a pocket, if memory serves me correctly that's where he played in his younger days, and we are definately lacking in the forward department.

He's too short for Full Forward, he played better against Essendon anyway, he's still okay. They better not give him Captain next year though.

Glad we didn't trade him?

I'm coming back on tomorrow to read the following threads:

"Trade Ottens"
"Trade Harley"
"Trade Wojak"
"Trade Kelly"
"Trade Mooney"
etc... you get the point!

Well done to all the boys that have shared the driving this year!
