I think it's almost a certainty that Stenglein will be going home to Perth next year. The good thing is that both WA teams are going to finish ahead of us, so Stinga just can't use the pre-season draft to get home.

While West Coast are spoken of as being his likely suitor, if Josh Carr stays with Port, Freo might well be in the market as well, as neither WA team has a tagger of the quality of Stenglein.

Dealing briefly with Freo, I'd be telling them the only trades I'm interested in are

Stenglein for Schammer
or
Stenglein plus 1st rounder for Pavlich

Back to West Coast.

I went to the Port v West Coast game today and had a really good look first hand at Waters and Butler. Both these lads are going to be players of the future and the type that we need. Either would be a good trade, but I was really impressed with Waters

http://westcoasteagles.com.au/default.asp?pg=players&spg=playerprofile

He's all that profile says and more, and only 18. He plays like a man already, and is very well put together. He'll end up being a top-liner IMO.

The good thing is that if the clubs don't want to trade these players Stinga stays here.

Let's use his possible departure as a positive, not as a backward step.

Your thoughts??

Agreed.

We still mope about not getting the most out of the Johnson trade. Well then let's make sure we make Stenglein's departure a winner.

I agree with you whole heartedly. Either of those 2 would be a good get for Stinger and win-win IMHO.

I rate both highly but if we are interested in picking up Griffen as I am led to believe then Waters would be a perfect trade for us. Griffen is similar type to Butler.

Beau Waters for Tyson Stenglein is probably the way it might pan out I reckon because I can't see WC trading their 1st round draft pick for him.

WIN-WIN

To be fair I think we got a good deal from Richmond for Johnson but we screwed it up by giving up the picks to Kangas.

I think we'd need something more than Stenglein to get Waters.

Gun youngster vs reasonable midfielder

We'd probably need to throw in a second-rounder or Perrie.

I'd be happy to throw in Perrie and keep the second rounder, but that would only be for Waters. It's not as if the coaching panel see Perrie as an integral part of our first 22.

For Butler, it would be a straight swap or nothing.

Lets say we win one more game this year against Richmond, we finish 6 and 16 and most prolly 13th in front of Hawks, Bullies and Richmond. Would Freo accept Stinger, Birdman and our first pick for Pavlich? and would AFC do that or use that pick for one of the top ten players???

Ah ok.

This trade makes perfect sense.

I have a feeling Butler is SA aswell. But I'd rather keep him than Waters.

I don't think neither side would go for that trade. I think we will use the pick for the best available in the draft

I've backed Stiffy all the way when he says - no trading the first round draft pick.

But that's also always been with one qualification - we do trade it if we can get a young star.

Pavlich certainly fits the bill, doesn't he.

He'd be hard to get, but worth a crack.

Yes Buttler is from SA as well. He was drafted from Central Disctrict FC.

You are the first Eagles supporter that actually agreed to this trade. Why is that?????? You don't rate Waters or you rate Stenglein or you rate both??????

IMO Waters hasn't shown anything until today.. Stenglein is a proven tagger... we have a LOT of Waters type players coming through the ranks, Butler, Brett Jones, Nicoski even Staker. We need a good tagger and Stenglein is perfect. Plus both players would be back in their home states which is the ideal situation (barring Chris Judd).

Got to give up something to get something, right?

Fair enough. We'll take Waters for Stenglein thanks :)

Actually Stenglein is the perfect fit for West Coast. You have some of the very best attacking mid-fielders in the game in Cousins, Judd, Kerr and Fletcher. Stenglein gives you that missing link of the quality tagger who can still get possessions.

Waters would give us what we need. A young long-term player to add to the mid-field, who will be good enough to be part of our re-building process and be there for 10 to 12 years.

I see it as a WIN-WIN situation, with both players also ending up back home.

Exactly.

Never has a trade made more perfect sense than this one.

On the contrary. Stinger will end up captain of Adelaide in the next 3 to 4 years if he stays.

The problem is that he just refuses to commit to re-signing with the club and he is home-sick.

When a player changes his manager from a SA based one to a WA one, you have to accept that he is serious about going home.

Adelaide will do everything in it's power to keep him, but the general feeling is that he's going for sure.

If that's the case, it then becomes a question of what can we get for him - which brings us back to this thread.

Stenglein is a very good tagger, a clearance king and is good with the hard ball. He is not a frontline midfielder, but he does give West Coast exactly what they need in terms of an accountable midfielder. Also has good leadership qualities.

However, if he is determined to go home we want something good for him. Waters isn't anything yet, but he is a gun youngster from our hometown, and certainly looked good today against Port.

Yes, can be considered a win-win.
